Are there any Science Fiction musicals/comedy-plays out there, particularly in the Space Opera genre? I thought it would be fun to toy with the concept, and I wanted to see if I could find inspiration or at least watch/read something of the sort.
There's a new dystopian musical coming out soon called Repo! The Genetic Opera. It's a rock opera about this future in which this company loans organs out to people and this guy has to repossess them if the people don't pay up, I guess. I don't remember. It just sounds really cool, and plus Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy, is the lead. I've been thinking of writing a musical outside of the normal settings myself.
An amazing, and strange, movie. That's a definite recommendation. I was thinking about it and I remembered that a few years ago there was a musical rendition of the film Evil Dead simply called Evil Dead: The Musical. It's not space opera, so it's a far stretch, but that's the best I could come up with aside from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I never heard of any sci-fi musicals but horror musicals. Andrew Lloyd Weber turned The Phantom of the Opera into an opera. I heard somewhere that The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, by HP Lovecraft, had been turned into a musical. And the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer had an entire episode as a musical. So go with your idea. YOu might be the first.
So no musicals set in space or the future yet, then, thank God. But is it only a matter of time before we get "Dr Who-the Musical"? I bet that David Tennant can hold a tune. The flesh begins to creep.
there has been a musical made from Top Gun. It was a stage production, not a movie, though, and Lord of the Rings was made into an opera.
There is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. There is Young Frankenstein. There is Evil Dead the Musical (more horror, but still fun). There is Bat Boy (about a bat/human hybrid (mad science!) trying to find acceptance in a small town that wants to kill him). I will keep thinking. I love showtunes!!!
Little Shop of Horrors. And since we did have Cop Rock (a truly horrible show!), I think it is inevitable that we will see an extended sci-fi musical as well someday.
Wicked is a great fantasy musical. Very industrial/fantasy with lots of mixed century elements. I think Jim Hensen Productions did a "Muppets In Space" movie about 10 years ago. Never saw it, though. It would definitely be a musical if it's Muppets. Little Shop of Horrors is another good one. I like this much better as a live musical rather than the movie. I'm a big Steve Martin fan, but he just doesn't do it for me in this one. This is a play much better suited for the stage than the screen. I also recall staging some scenes from "Space Opera" and "Opera Galactica" in college. (My directing partner was really into that stuff.) Don't remember the composers, but just google the names and I'm sure they'll come up. Very strange, from what I recall of the scenes I worked. Sort of like "Space Balls" on crack.
Actually this one had maybe one song in it that I can remember, and it wasn't one written for the movie.
There is a new musical called "Repo" that takes place in the future where they can clone organs and give them to people, but they are expensive and if you miss a payment for your kidney, they come and repo it i.e. kill you.
