Quantity never defines quality. If your plot is simple or succint enough to fit into 2 or 3 pages, why try to stretch it on? Doing so usually gives some sense of security to a writer, but it may well be too draggy for the reader.
I agree 100% i have written many shorts that i feel are to long and go off topic where as i write shorts that end up being 5 pages and summing up the whole plot and everything. I guess the length really depends on the plot and everything.
Yea i was thinking of using the blog here to post some stuff but i do have my public shorts on the webook site. I'm not sure if i can post the link here Edit: I posted a few of my stories in my blog
An honorary mention winner in an old edition of L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future contest was just three paragraphs long. If I can dig up the edition and the story I'll post the title. But to win even an honorary mention and to be published in the collection is noteworthy in and of itself.
Flash (< 1K) Short Story (1-7.5K) Novelette (7.5-15K) Novella (15-40K) Novel (> 40K) I find it funny that the fanfiction I've written in the past falls into the novel category. I also find this guide useful. Thanks!
the length is determined by two factors: 1. how long your story needs to be 2. the length various publications will accept the average acceptable size for most venues is 5k... but others will take much shorter and somewhat longer... it's up to you to decide how many words it takes to tell your stories and where you would like to see them published... and the length is measured in words, never pages...
