    Short Story Club

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by thirdwind, Jul 4, 2011.

I think we should try to get the short story club started again. I talked to Daniel, and he supports the idea. We'll be doing it the same way as the book club. People nominate stories and then we vote to see which stories we'll be reading.

Before I make a thread for nominations, I just wanted to note that links to stories are not allowed. So when posting nominations, please just list the name of the story and the author. Also make sure that the story is easily accessible to all those who want to participate. I was thinking we could read and discuss one story this month and see how that goes. Hopefully we can get to the point where we're reading a few stories a month.

Are people still interested in doing this? And for those of you doing the book club, do you think having the story club every month is a good idea, or do you think we should alternate between clubs each month?

Once I get an idea of how many people will be participating, I'll start a thread for nominations. If there are a lot of people who want to participate, then we'll have to limit the number of nominations to one per person. If you have any suggestions and/or comments, please post them here.

I'd do it if the short story is one that I can access online.

I support this. I do not support the idea for it potentially only coming once every two months. Once a month should be plenty of time and all that.

I also agree with Mallory: it should be available online for free.

I'm in, and recommend The Shared Patio by Miranda July. You should be able to find it through Google.

I agree with you guys about the story being easily available, and I'll be sure to mention this once I start the nomination thread.

I don't want this to conflict with the existing Book Club, which is why I suggested we alternate between the two. I know that there are some members who want to participate in both, and reading a novel and a few stories each month might not be possible due to time constraints.

Arron, thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to make (and sticky) another thread for nominations so please save your suggestion for that thread.

Any other comments and/or questions are welcome.

I'll most likely participate. Count me in.

What's the short story club? Can you explain what it is for the new members like me? I was thinking about doing one for screenwriters too.

Basically we just read and discuss a couple of short stories each month. It's like a book club but with stories instead of novels.

I want to join in too. I don't know of that many short stories though, so I'll leave all suggestions up to other people.

Sounds a good idea, I'd probably join in if it were to go ahead!

I want to do it, but I do think it would be easier if we alternated between a full-length novel and short stories every other month. If that's not how we end up doing it, I'll still try to participate in both, but that would make it a lot easier.

    Some authors to consider:

    Raymond Carver
    Flannery O'Connor
    John Cheever

Can members recommend other member's work? I'd like to read what you guys write as well as published works.

This sounds great! I'd love to join. Reading short stories would be more easier for me too since I'm busy a lot of the day...

I was wondering if you guys would still like to continue the short story club. Based on last month's participation, it doesn't look like people are interested.

If you do decide to continue a short story club, I would definitely like to participate. I'm the weirdo with stacks of short story collections by my bed instead of John Grisham novels. >.< So I would love to have an outlet to discuss. :)

I would still like it to continue and was pretty sad that the thread got deleted. Usually, If I say I'm going to do something I do it. I do think that one month is too long for short-stories to be honest that people forget.

I'm still interested in it. I did try and participate last time but I haven't been in the greatest reading mood lately.

I'm still up for it. It's just that a lot of people said they would participate and didn't, so I just thought people lost interest. If I get more responses from people, I'm up for starting in again for sure.

I'd really love to do this. My schedule probably wouldn't let me come play in the book club, but I could squeeze in a short story.

Also, not enough people sit down and read short stories as their form of choice anymore. It's an art form that could use some lovin'.

I didn't participate last month cuz I hate (HATE(HAAAATE)) that story, which I guess is the persistent problem with these clubs...people only join in if they like the text.

But yeah, if the next one is good, I'm in...

I particularly didn't like the last one either. Also, there is always a trend of classic stories that get suggested and while I love the classics, I'm really tried of them. I've studied them all throughout middle school, in greater detail in high school, and then in college as well, and it just gets old.

    But whatever, I'll still participate.

I didn't realize it had actually started. Is it still going on? If so, what story are we doing?
