You know, nobody makes the effort to be an effective troll anymore. Back in the day, an Internet douche would take his time, start small, make a few insidious cuts, a few charming apologies, make a mod team debate as to whether he'd stay or go. Now? Now it's instant troll bukkake and immediate ban. No laughs. No entertainment. No dramatic exit.

Sigh... the world is going to shit.

I can't speak for him specifically, but good trolls know how to walk the line of acceptable behavior and at the same time, much of what they say is actually important and meaningful. They often say the things the more politically correct want to say but won't, so they serve a valuable purpose.

I used to belong to a forum where there were several, and honestly, though they could be offensive and piss you off, sometimes they stirred the conversation in directions it needed to go but nobody else would take it. The forum got new ownership, decided to chuck them all out, along with anybody who came anywhere near that line, and now it's placid and harmless and not interesting in the least. It seems many sites did a similar purge a few years ago—in order to be more child-friendly they decide to disallow real adult conversation with its inherent risks. Historically the most thriving societies have always allowed children to sit near and hear the talk of the adults. When a society begins to hide the harsh realities of life from the youth, the youth grow up tender and incapable of meeting life's challenges.

    You know the old adage:

    Hard times make strong men
    Strong men make good times
    Good times make weak men
    Weak men make hard times

I don't know if the troll we're talking about was of that caliber or not though.

pinky's been back twice... once as snapfandango and once as dropstitch... we banned him again both times in fairly short order... really being a self amusing troll is neither big nor clever, they the equivalent of the disruptive kid in class amusing themselves to the detriment of everyone else

I think you'd have to weigh up whether the occasional bout of clarity that trolls bring is really worth the hundreds of pieces of disruption you have to go through before that one nugget surfaces.

pinky liked to write odes to his penis while drunk, and harass other members...that ain't a good look. It was unsolicited and unwelcome love (sex) poetry to a female member that ultimately got him banned, although it was very much the last straw, in a veritable hay stack of provocation.

End of the day although trolls can sometimes be funny, they are also nearly always a pain in the arse and detrimental to the community as a whole...which is why they are never welcome, and why we have taken a harder line on the sort of edge lord behaviour that used to be more tolerated.

on that note, since this thread is now totally off topic, its time for the big metal key
