I'm such a trendsetter!!! Today was Disney Day for our Homecoming week at school (homecoming, by the way --I realized no other country really practices it-- is the week of what is traditionally the biggest American football game), and they played that song over the intercom during passing periods! I really really really cant sing, but some friends and I sang it really loudly down the hallway. "King Klick" by Kottonmouth Kings. ... I remember when I knew all the lyrics to this song. I cant decide if I should be embarassed about that or not.
I've always been curious about homecoming- is it just about the football game, or does it celebrate something else? Isn't there traditionally a prom for it? It always seems whenever Canada has a Holiday that isn't shared in America, there's always something similar right around the same time- for example, Homecoming I take it is this week, and Canadian Thanksgiving is next week. Opeth, Porcelain Heart.
Prom is after homecoming. There IS a homecoming dance, but it is just an excuse for people to get drunk, come to school and have sex on a dance floor. YAY AMERICA!
High schools typically have a homecoming in the fall and a prom in the spring. They both are dances, but Homecoming also has an American football game. Traditionally, homecoming meant that it was the time when all the alumni "came home" to root for their alma mater's team followed by a social gathering. It's generally just supposed to be a time of happiness and old friends... I dont think it actually has much to do with Canadian thanksgiving, just a coincidence --for once. Most alumni dont come home for homecoming anymore, but the tradition has long stuck (American culture does celebrate virtually everything, right? Irishfest, Oktoberfest, all winter holidays, etc -- LOL), so now most schools just use it to spread school spirit and welcome the current students back from summer, and the social gathering morphed into a school-wide dance. Prom is in the spring, and I dont know the history behind it, but since it's strictly for upperclassmen (underclassmen prohibited without invitation), I assume it just has to do with a send-off for the high school seniors. xxxx "Obsession" by InnerPartySystem
Hypnotize - System of a Down. A message of note about this, I confessed to quite liking SOAD the other day to a lass on my course. I was met with a cold expression as I explained that I actually quite like metal of several intensities. Why on earth was I explaining why I like the music I like? I'm 20! I thought my peers were more mature than that.
"Nymphetamine Fix" by Cradle of Filth. I'm not really a big fan of CoF; I'm not a fan of Dani Filth and the type of vocals they usually do, and I'm not really into a lot of satanic songs, but I love Leaves' Eyes, and the female on this track is the lead singer. This really was such a masterpiece.
I disagree on that definition... And it's certainly not an American phenomenon. (Well, homecoming is, but the behavior isnt.) "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths. Oh, Morrissey...
Children of Bodom, Hatecrew Deathroll ' We're the hate crew, we stand and we won't fall... We're all for none and none for all.' Oddly enough, playing this song makes me think of Leafs 'goaltender' Vesa Toskala right around now.
