Turn chin towards sun twice a day, water it and poof. Now... if it would only work on the top of my head.
Mmmm.... nope. That's me. I said, "....and, oh, hey, you get to hear Wrey's voice." Speaking of myself in the 3rd person.
OK, I get it. I find it truly is fascinating to hear a member's voice. Much different from a photo alone.
Yeah, me too. I love accents... I mean REALLY love accents. Pitch and timbre too. If I'm honest I'm much more attracted by sound than sight... probably stems from the same place my appreciation of music comes from. For having lived in Belfast so long, my accent although broad in general terms is definitely Belfast Light, but I do have that coffee and fags husk that is apparent in so many women here. It's gravelly and splits in two, one sound coming from the back of my throat while another pitched much deeper crackles from the depths of my diaphragm. Michelle Fairley who plays Catelyn Stark is a good example of this, although her Coleraine accent has been somewhat Anglicised because of her acting. I find it a bit weird that the American accents I like the least are New England Irish/American ones. I mean, I actually physically cringe when I hear them. No offense meant to those in New England... I think it's my subconscious reacting to what I hear—the bastardisation of my mother tongue. So near and yet so far. I think it'd be really cool to invite members to recite a short self-written favourite paragraph or poem. As it stands right now, I've only had the pleasure of hearing three members voices; @jannert's, @Wreybies, and @matwoolf's, and on each occasion it really helped me put their conversational writing into better perspective. Hearing matwoolf reading his own work was the highlight of my day. Only reservation with this, is whether doing so would effectively hamper our ability to critique. One way round this would be to recite someone else's work... hell, that would be fun. I can totally hear one of Jannert's lyrical narrative passages read with my accent. But all that said, deaf or extremely hard of hearing members would gain nothing by this. Now I'm curious what particular elements they would chose to glean that little bit of extra insight. Someone throw a pic up quick before I derail this thread any further.
That looks amazing @Wreybies . A lot of work too. I love the look of the jungle, but all the evil creepy-crawlies, that I know are everywhere in it, dampen my enthusiasm. You confused me for a moment with the 3rd person too @obsidian_cicatrix : The worst American accent I ever heard was in Hollywood. Depressingly enthusiastic and loud.
@jazzabel... know exactly what you mean. I did a quick drive up through Cali when heading to Portland. I think my opinion is also coloured by the attitude with which the words are spoken as by the accent itself. Very different in it's sunny disposition to the doom/gloom tack we have a tendency to adopt round here. It's the weather, I tell ya! It's really hard to be a happy shiny person when it's pissing down with rain all the time.
Just bloody pathetic. And I thought we had it bad here, with the little drummer boys banging up and down the main streets nearest me. It's very quiet today, the 12th, so I suspect they're all off to Belfast to add to the crap and mayhem. It was no-go here last week, though. I had to postpone my grocery shopping trip because the streets were shut off. I'm so sorry you're having to put up with this. Really really sorry. .............. On a happier note, @Lemex, many congratulations! I hope you enjoy the teaching, once you get started. Have you landed a job for the autumn yet? And @Wreybies - nice to see your back garden. Geez. Termites nests! I think maybe we need a night shot as well. I can only imagine what turns up at night. And birds too?
Bats. Insane numbers of bats. I think there may be an opening to a cave in the area I call Fern Gully. I haven't gone down there yet. Need to get some rope and I'm not really sure what to expect at the bottom. Hard, rocky, dirt, muddy, deep-muddy... Not sure. Also, I need a partner and no one I know will go with me. Not smart to do things like that solo. Anyway... Puerto Rico has extensive and varied cave networks all over the island. It's a spelunker hot-spot.
Is it just me or did anybody else native to the British Isles/Ireland nearly fall over laughing when they first came across the term, spelunking? Sounds more like a colloquialism for a sexual act. I actually ran for the nearest dictionary thinking my American husband was taking the mick. I returned to him dictionary in hand, "Oh, you mean pot-holing."
@obsidian_cicatrix : I know what you mean, and you are right. But even when I lived in Australia up until a few years ago, as sunny as can be, I still found the accent difficult to listen to. A childhood friend of mine came to my wedding, he had moved to LA years ago, and at one point he offered me a 'tarnic'. And I was like what is that? So he starts laughing, "Tarnic, you don't know what tarnic is?" and brings out the bottle, and I'm like "Tonic! Not 'Tarnic.'"
