It's been a lot of fun getting to know people via this forum this year (I joined in March) and I now count several of you as friends. I'm always entertained by what I read here, and often find lots of helpful advice, suggestions, etc, that I can apply to my own writing. More power to our collective arms! I wish you all a lovely holiday season, whatever it is that you do or believe.
Glad we could entertain for the year. This forum is full of interesting people, and I'm glad to still be a part of it after so many years.
Darn, Wreybies, how can anyone top that? May the best ye hae ivver seen be the warst ye'll ivver see and may ye aye juist be sae happie as A wuss ye aye tae be. (I cheated. ) Merry Christmas Jan. Enjoy your day off from the kitchen and give my regards to the cook as well. Ginger
Will do. Whatever he's doing in there at the moment smells great. And there's a big empty bottle that used to contain red wine waiting to go out to the wheelie bin ...once the gales die down a bit. This is a weird Christmas weather-wise, that's for sure. But I can be thankful for a snug house, lovely tree, and whatever comes next. My little owl is back on the tree, too!
Happy Yule everyone! I also joined around the same time with @jannert, and gotta say, this place is awesome and I'm so glad T and I found our way here^^ Now off to eat joulutorttus and karjalanpiirakkas with munavoi and gravlax (couldn't come up with English translations and I doubt they even have any official names in English... Traditional X-mas cuisine...)!
Ermm ...being a foodie I couldn't resist looking them up. Jam tarts, rice pies with egg butter and raw salmon cured with sugar and dill? Sounds intriguing and delicious. Hope you enjoy. Here, I had my homemade tourtierres (meat pie containing a mixture of pork and beef and onion, spiced with a touch of cake spices) and brandied peaches, dill pickles and homemade cranberry-orange relish. Christmas Day? Well, that's in the hands of my husband, and he's never traditional. I'm prepared to be surprised. Again. Yum.
Right back atcha, Jan, hope you have a good one. And hope you enjoy our little present. It's very Finnish... We've been all over those books, so thanks again, you're a life (writer?) saver. Actually, cured with sea salt (lots of it) and just a pinch of sugar. We don't like dill much, so we leave it out even though it is traditional. Other than that, good job finding those names! The rice pies are sometimes called Karelian pies since that's where they've originated. We had our Christmas Eve, exchanged prezzies (which were totally awesome), and now I'm polishing our WIP while Kat's sleeping on the couch next to me. Life is good. As for the forum... we were a bit disheartened after finding one small, tight-knit forum and one bigger one to be just, well, less than inviting, so we were caught off-guard when we came here and found a true rarity: nice and intelligent people! Now visiting WF has become a daily ritual for us and despite our short time here, the forum has already given us more than we could ever give back. Keep up the good work and happy holidays to all!
Just took the cookies out of the oven. Mmmmmmm. And tomorrow is all food and relaxation. I bring the fixings, my son says he'll cook.
I wish I could learn Gaelic! (I'm going to visit Ireland next summer, and we're seeing a lot of the Gaelic speaking part of it. ) Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year! I can't believe it's only been 4 months since I joined! You guys are all awesome. I made (and continue to make) many good friends here. As for my Christmas plans, I spent Christmas eve in Connecticut, drove back home last night, had Christmas morning with cinnamon buns, going to sing with the youth choir at noon, back home and open more presents, and then up to Brooklyn for a day or two.
When I was in Dublin a few years ago, I bought an Irish phrasebook/dictionary, swearing I'd learn at least the basics. Turned out it was more than I could chew, but at least I got a few nice character names from the book (that I proceeded to bastardize) Lol, yeah. There were some rumors that Sweden tried to ban joulutorttus this Christmas 'cause some of the shapes resemble swastikas. I don't know, feels like a bit of a stretch.
I'm kinda late, but still - Hopefully you had a wonderful Christmas, and I wish a productive new year to all of you!
