That moment when you find a world-building app only to find that it's web based and lags like a Super Nintendo emulator on crack
TMW you realise why people joke about "If Christian Grey in Fifty Shades wasn't rich it'd be a Criminal Minds episode". I knew it was poorly-written and less-than-ideal morally, but the book is... not sexy. He's a rage monster who's BDSM activities are simultaneous not that intense but also explicitly violate consent and derive from his freaky childhood hangups fetishised. He's controlling, demanding, and literally sets up a dangerous scenario with a rapist to "prove" that she "needs" him. And the book version is filled with the protagonist berating herself, being excessively naive, and seeming to hate the BDSM strongly except for her attraction to him(wherein the consent issues rise when he bullies her into it). And it's suggestions about the reason for, nature of and way to deal with it are less than ideal since it's basically "I can fix him" where BDSM is lumped in with being a dick. This aspects seems not quite well recognised, that as a public face for women's sexuality and pro-BDSM content it's a very poor representation of both. The fact the author is apparently violently defensive of it, is a woman, and says this is her fantasies as a book, just makes trying to understand why more difficult. The argument that she's an attention whore seems like the only reasonable explanation.
That's why I recommend 'The Secretary' movie from the director Steven Shainberg. It's far more exciting and the BDSM is portraited with maturity, and guess what? Both characters are into this lifestyle! Wow! What a discovery! Both have chemistry! Wow! That's so new! I would accept Fighty Shades of Grey if the story were about Anastasia being a victim of abuse and trying to escape from her abuser. But in the end, she must be helped, and Christian get to jail.
Yeah, it is basically a story that tells women that being abused by a guy who is attractive is ok, and kinda says that attractive rich guys are not capable of being abusive (even when they are). There is much worse stories out there than 50 Shades, in terms of what goes on, in terms of genre. Though I agree with @LoaDyron that the Secretary portrays a BDSM lifestyle better. A few things are a little bit over the top, and the guy does come off as a little creepy, but I chalk it up to the actor who plays him. Other than that it is a decent flick.
One thing in the video series I was watching about it that struck me was when he argued that Christian Grey is almost the real self-insert, not the woman. Which fits into the author's very aggressive domineering personality with criticism. That's a creepy thing to think about, that it might be some sort of weirdly misogynistic "I want to be a man" fantasy.
I have not heard this theory before. I will say she seems to have an unhealthy concept of a relationships and sex, that much we can all kinda get behind.
may be she fetishises the English language and gets a thrill out of abusing it.... that would explain much about how badly written they were
In the books, Anna develops a thing against blondes, partially because "why not" it seems, and partially because Christian has an army of blonde bimbo secretaries he hired specifically because they DON'T remind him of his birth mother, who the text versions have him refer to as "the crack wore", and therefore he will not want to pull them into one of his abusive BDSM relationships as part of his unfulfilled mommy complex. This is one piece of evidence against her representation and dealings with women. I don't know if that's actually what's going on, but the possibility is disturbing.
BTW here are the analysis videos if anyone wants to see all the filthy details of what's wrong with this train-wreck:
Funny you should mention that, one of her tantrums over the first movies attempts to genuinely fix her stories problems is over a scene where Christian tells her he'll slap her six times and then keeps going. The director and writer for the first film, who tried so hard to make it work, wanted to have her use the safe word, to acknowledge the problem. E.L James thought that Anna actually trying to stop Christian's abuse, despite seeming to enjoy it less in her version, is a blasphemous idea.
Yeah. True be told the character from the secretary does some of that stuff. However, there's no comparison to that film to the 50 shades. To the woman? Or to the fanfic writer? After all, this disaster of a story came from fanfic, the author just changed the names and probably the setting and the bom! Your story. I'm, not saying fanfic is terrible, some are and some don't. I'm writing one but to improve my English only. But even if the author will have to write about BDSM, at least she should have done her research before writing anything, or even after her drafts.
