Having read the wonderful summary and some of the RPG itself, a new poster appears with a new character. I hope we can all have lots of fun together! Name: Bins of the Dal Elves Age: Like all elves, looks around 20. Race: Elf, probably part dwarf Appearance: Finding an unattractive elf would be a difficult task, but if you were to try, your search would end with Bins. The slender and willowy frame of the elves does not suit Bins, who instead appears lanky and underfed. *The long dirty mass of white blond hair on his head, if pulled into a ponytail, would have a diameter which would exceed that of his waist. Rats have nested in it twice, but in his defense, only while he was sleeping. His eyes are a fungus green and his chin looks like its been smashed against the floor a fair few times. Light blond hair makes his eyebrows difficult to locate on his pale face, meaning he often looks a bit expressionless and creepy. There are long thin welts in his hands where he holds arrows along his palm. His clothes are beautiful elven clothes, but have quite a bit of wear and tear on them. Personality: Bins might be very aware of his own weaknesses, but that does not mean he has overcome them. Persistent, friendly, and a bit of a coward, Bins likes both the easy life and life on the move. This contradiction tends to make him more irritating than charming. Bio: Having lacked the necessary muscle control and eyesight to become a good archer, Bins has nonetheless stuck to using arrows. He uses arrows as a close combat weapon, sometimes throwing them, but usually stabbing them into the enemies flesh and retreating. He doesn't carry a bow.*He left the village of the Dal Elves in search of his true mother, even though he has no actual idea where or who she is, but suspects she is a dwarf. Being of a persistent nature, Bins has decided to capture a dragon and force it to reveal with its mystical... dragon-y powers... where his mother is. Too bad Bin's greatest fear is reptiles. TL;DR Bins is an ugly elf looking for a dragon to tell him where his dwarf mother is. He fights with arrows (but no bow). He's persistent and friendly, but also a lazy impatient coward who is terrified of all reptiles, even dragons.
NeonFraction very interesting character you have there! God this beach is getting crowded xD.
Agreed. And, at this point, I'm seriously wondering what kind of game this will be. Whatever threat we come up against will pretty much be obliterated on sight. I mean, some of the characters are probably strong enough to save the world all by themselves... but that's a different discussion entirely. It's going to take some very creative GMing to keep this from becoming a walk in the park. It already looks like most of the characters don't really care about any potential threat (which, I must admit, is quite funny at times, but also damaging to the main plotline). LOL, what "Void," what "Darkness?"
Stop saying things that I agree with, damnit! I keep hitting that rep button only to find that I can't rep you I won't say I hate OP characters, but this RP has quite a few characters that could indeed save the world by themselves. I am not a fan of total equality either, but a 20 mile long dragon seems incredibly overpowered compared to a bull sized one...then again, large dragons can be killed by smaller ones. Not that I plan on doing such a thing, but still. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj49Dgnw8vs Either way, Keit is going to have to be very creative in dealing with those powerful characters, without insta-killing the rest of us in the crossfire...
Well I don't know if when you refer to OP stuff. I guess Segnung (Camdin's sword) could be considered much, but it can be matched by other magic or strong enough energy. Hell if Draven would have cloaked her wave in magic or shot some magical energy. Only reason it slashed through those fairies was because they were weak. I don't know if you were referring to his sword being OP, but I was saying, just in case.
You seem to focused on who can win and who can't Yeah there are some big dragons, following the rules of OP. Yet this doesn't imply the players will actually abuse of them. Perhaps they'll focus more on create a good plot than just using their dragons as pokemon to win. On the other hand I'm sure that for the sake of plot Keith won't allow an abuse of these characters.
AnonyMouse: Macaberz: Characters that could save world by themselves? You think? I doubt it We haven't even seen one enemy that's all that dangerous yet. If we threw the strongest member of our team up against a boss I'm pretty sure they would lose. The stronger the party is the more powerful the GM will make the enemies. But as the Boss said. Hopefully this will a case of plot over power.
The problem is this, at this stage no one has any clue what that sword is capable of. It becomes a deus ex machina. Daven couldn't possibly have known that "cloaking her wave in magic" would've countered whatever Camdin did with his blade. You might know the limitations of the blade, of Erde Welt and of Camdin, but as long as we don't, they can all be OP since you can just conveniently counter any strike and claim that its part of Camdin's capabilities to do so. Asune, once again, I have no clue whatsoever what Karen's limitations are. The spec for an air dragon says he can breathe electricty, so that's what Zebulon will be capable of doing. Furthermore he can fly and right now he is somewhat larger than your average bull and has similar strenght. That, to me, is specific enough and within reasonable bounds. One thing you have to consider is how pointless other characters become the minute you have a character that is powerful enough to save the world by him or herself. To me, playing with OP characters is like playing a game with cheats enabled. The carnage and havoc you can create may be fun for a little while, but there is zero challenge involved. Please note that I am not calling you guys cheaters, I am just trying to say that I don't really see the fun in having powerful characters and that it might render other, weaker characters, to be useless. Kingtype Yes, I do think so. Consider that Keitsumah will have to come up with something so ridiculously strong that even Camdin, Karen and Blaine will struggle. Now consider how extraordinarly lethal that enemy would be for the weaker characters. Realistically, anything that poses a threat to a 20-mile long dragon can kill a bull-sized dragon by snapping its fingers. See the issue? The stronger some characters are in comparison, the stronger the foes will be. The weaker characters wouldn't be able to even scratch those foes since they are so powerful.
Macaberz: The stronger some characters are in comparison, the stronger the foes will be. The weaker characters wouldn't be able to even scratch those foes since they are so powerful. That's not true. Pickles was still weak compared to most of the Exzalia (best thing I can compare it to) party and he was still able to hurt all the enemies. Even when he wasn't able to hurt one he managed to do it with the gear he was carrying. And it wasn't like Pickles had the best gear ever. The magic shield and the Althea Blade. As for Blaine being OP.........I'm not to sure about that. His main asset is his raw strength. Which is pretty up there to the point he can compete with some of the bigger dragons in a straight up physical fight and his body's durability is enough to shrug off being hit by most normal weapons as his body is extremely hard (but it all plays into his plot. So I went with it) He also has two other powers (one which I can't say, he never uses it anyway and then the poison if that counts) But Blaine has plenty of weaknesses. He's really slow (when running stiff) and he's not all that agile. Magic attacks hurt him as well. So if so one spammed attacked him he'd be pretty hurt. So I guess in a way he's pretty OP up close but it make sense that he would be. Considering the plans I have for him.
Then again I think you're too focused in battles and who'll win or not. This RPG could have one or two battles at most, it can still be good. Regarding Karen limits I really didn't thought of that, is easier that way, I mean I don't really intend her to be a character who battles all time. I'll rather play with her personality and what I had prepared for her.
Asune : Marc is right. Camdin has weaknesses also. He isn't that fast, and his actual strength isn't that strong. It is like that of a normal man. I made it seem like he had increased speed and strength in his CS. But playing as him shows that isn't necessarily true. I mean getting the sword off of him would practically make him useless. And the villain would probably be able to sense magic to know Camdin's main ability.
Kingtype but it is true. It's really simple in fact. Let's get a bit overly-mathy on this, shall we? Suppose we have a weak character who has only 100 health points. Then there is Blaine who, due to his hardness, has 1000 health points. To pose a challenge, Keitsumah would no have to come up with an enemy that deals, let's see, 100dmg per blow. That enemy would have to do 10 strikes to kill Blaine, yet only one to kill a weak character. Granted, I made those numbers up, but you can't get around the point that strong chars = stronger foes. And stronger foes = gigantic trouble for weaker characters. Keit is forced to scale with the strongest, but when the strongest are so vastly superior to the weaker, the game is bound to get unbalanced. In other words, what might be a challenge for Blaine would absolutely instantly kill any other character. That's the problem. You kinda danced around the problem by making the comparison with Pickles. I am talking about this game, with these characters. Asune. It's not about who will win. It's about who is capable of having their character defeated. Forgive me my bluntness, but it seems to me some people struggle with admitting defeat. Now I am not bothered because I want my character to win or whatever, I am bothered because it completely draws me out of the story. I can recall several situations where certain characters got absolutely hammered, and everyone was defeated except for this one character who just shrugged off every attack. That to me is the biggest nuisance that OP'ing poses, I think I am just a nit-picker when it comes to realism. I don't care how hardened your character is, if a meteorite explodes in your face, he or she is going to be hurt, yet this is not how some characters have reacted in the past. TheLeonard112 Once again, you are telling me these things only now. Don't get me wrong, I 'aint even mad or anything it's just that if I hadn't started talking about this, I never would've known what Camdin's and Erde Welt's flaws and weaknesses were. Of course, none of this means I can't enjoy the game. But I have to admit that I've cringed a few times when all-too-convenient things happen.
Macaberz Well I tried to implicate it when Camdin got punched to the ground by a normal guard.
Hrm. A new problem arises. If your characters are overpowered, mine is... significantly underpowered. Especially since his fighting style is: "Grab flimsy wood arrow. Stab the thing! Run away from the thing!" It's a good thing Bins is a coward or he would be soooo dead.
Macaberz: You missed the point. No matter what game Exzalia, Jumpers, Z Well etc The weaker characters don't die from one or two hits and they still deal enough damaged to be considered a threat. Why would this game suddenly be considered different? Based on the evidence of other RPG's why do you assume the weaker characters will be so outmatched? They might be in PvP. But against bosses I highly doubt Keit would let her boss one hit kill any of the weaker characters or stronger characters On that note I also super highly doubt that she would let her bosses be mega immune to the weaker characters attacks. The weaker characters will still be able to hurt the bosses plenty. Also if you want to over think stuff and get technical Blaine wouldn't have 1000. He'd have 100 it would just decrease slower. Are we even going by a point system?
Asune: Which one? We said a few rules? The point system or the one hit one kill? You normally have to win COTU bosses by thinking. But I don't ever remember instant killed in COTU.......except by the.......thing. I'll change it though it was just an example off the top of my head.
*blinks in surprise* okay, what the heck has happened here? so many new chars i am going to have to read a LOT to get this all down. either way, for those who i have not seen on this side of the forum before, Welcome! And for the above posts that i can see.... no these bosses will require a lot of teamwork to bring down. I would not be that cruel to make them be able to kill humanoids or dragons, likewise, with one blow. They would be big enough to do such a thing actually... but you will just have to wait and see. *shudders* ugh you guys are gonna be so disgusted with the Great Hydra. I am evil beyond reason with him... also, no we are not going by a point system. I trust everyone to react realistically to whatever blows they take. Hint about the small bosses: they will be able to do damage to the dragons but will likely be too fast for the larger ones to do much about them, leaving the smaller chars to fight with the occasional large dragon blow. Hint about large bosses: they will be like puzzles. The large dragons will have to do the brunt of the fighting, but the smaller characters will have to do some key components to bring the bosses down. Overall, i consider that to be about equal, as larger creatures cannot move fast, but then... well let's just get you all out on the water and you will see.
Well, I guess this really long post I was writing was all for nought. Thanks for stepping in Keit. Like I said, it's going to take some creative GMing. Maybe I'll post something in RP general chat, since most of the stuff I was going to say about OP-this and OP-that applies to all RPs, not just this one.
AnonyMouse: Don't! Because it will be meaningful or really good (whatever you write) and we don't have enough rep to keep giving you.
