Well of course you should write what makes you happy. That's what everyone does.......I figured. But I don't think anyone would complain if they sold a billion.
Won't deny that sometimes I felt like writing some of my ideas into a whole novel. Yet I really wouldn't care about selling it or not.
If I ever finally get around to writing my novel and people seem to like it, I think I'd rather give it away for free.
I just want to write the stuff I like. If it sells good that's a big plus though. I mean I'd rather want to support myself on writing then anything else. Why? Because I enjoy writing. If you got paid a lot for doing what you loved it would be better then if you were not getting paid. I might not care about how well something I write sells but the bills and payments certainly would. I'm simply being realistic. I'd rather live on writing things I like then live on something I don't enjoy doing like.....I don't like being an accountant.
I have an automatic prejudice against free books. Because it seems, whenever they're free they are terrible...and no one can sell them. But that's just my personal opinion.
Lol. Where do you find free books? And I would care about my books selling. I mean I would only write them as a book to get acknowledge, because I want my work out there, but I would like some pay also.
I used to feel the same way until a college professor assigned Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. I'd never heard of the book or the author, but apparently he gives all or a lot of his stuff away for free. He's a proponent of the creative commons and the free exchange of information. Great book... even though I paid for it, cuz I don't like reading novels on a computer, LOL. Just goes to show there are a few gems out there in the freespace. The trick is to figure out why the author is giving it away for free. Is it because s/he couldn't get a publisher? Is it because s/he doesn't feel its marketable? Or (in this case) is it for ideological reasons? Heck, the same could be said of traditional books. Did someone write this for a quick cash grab? A book that sounds intriguing and convinces you to buy it, only to discover it's absolute garbage. Happens all the time with movies, music, video games, books, etcetera. You can tell when an author's heart isn't really in it. But, i digress.
Daniel Quinn is another such writer is a big proponent that kind of stuff. I had never heard of him before I read the book Ishmael on whim and it turned out to be pretty groundbreaking.
I love your belief DT and I agree, Anony, that not everything that is free is bad and not everything that has a price is good. So unfortunate isn't it? I would love it if we could get/give good literature for free more often.
That name keeps popping up for me. Ishmael it was on a video game trailer And now you said it. Perhaps this is as sign I need to do something with an Ishmael.
That is true. Nothing more amazing (or dangerous at times) then a person with three things a belief, will and determination.
Ok people. Invited a friend to the community and trying to convince him to check the RPs Keit, can you do a summary of DOH 'till now please? Concede me this favor xD
ill try -lemme just get Anonymouse's and add to it. Edit: drat, my time's up and i have to go. AnonyMouse, could you add on more to your previous summary for me dearie? (guh i sound so cheezy!)
Sure, but it's gonna take a while and I'm probably going to skip a lot of the non-essential stuff. The posts got incredibly hectic for a moment there and, frankly, I don't think it's necessary (or practical) to include every little cameo/sideplot/gag in the synopsis. Even I don't know what the heck was going on in some of those posts on the beach, for example.
I send the first summary to the guy. I would do one myself, but I'm a bit confused about certain stuff
