    The environment of an asteroid

Discussion in 'Research' started by JAIDS88, Feb 19, 2010.

So, I can't find anything about this. I want to know why life couldn't exist on an asteroid. In my story, life WILL exist on an asteroid - but I can't find any information on anything.

Anyone know something that isn't from the movie Armageddon?

okay, here is a question.. i can't find anything about the weather on an asteroid (and since most asteroids have no real atmosphere..) but anyway, i found info on the weather on pluto! and pluto isn't a planet, right? so do you think the weather would be similar?

i think the development of an oxygen-rich earth-like atmosphere on an asteroid is extremely unrealistic, if that's what you mean, but not unbelievable i suppose.

edit: ive heard it hypothesized the alien life could be survive of methane, be silica-based, ect. so an earthly atmosphere may not be necessary. depends on what you're going for.

You could have a chemical compound the when in extreme heat combines to create a simple living organism. This organism can then be planted onto a host and start growing there on it's own. (just made that up)

If you are talking about little martions. Then no they can't survive. You would rather have a spaceship built around a asteroid then the asteroid itself. Or some sort of atmospheric bubble that the martions somehow built.

I would think the 'weather' on an asteroid would be like the 'weather' in space since there isn't much atmosphere. Solar winds, solar flares, debris, etc. Search for 'weather in space' maybe.

Plus, it would be cold. Asteroids are a long way from any sun for much of their lives, so whatever "life" grew there would have to use almost no energy or have some method of extracting vast amounts of power from the asteroid itself. Earth has weather systems, oxygen and an atmosphere primarily because we are freakishly close to a star that can bathe our planet in vast amounts of solar energy. An asteroid would have no such power source.

Is there a point to something like this? I certainly hope your ego doesn't need it that bad.

Not really. I just want feedback on my own ideas. To even see if they are plausible in a successful story.
