Did you make the mistake of watching the Ubisoft conference? My God, that was so boring. Some guy talked about a movie for half a freaking hour. He got massive applause when he finally left the stage. The Sony conference was the best for me. Assassin's Creed 2 and FFXIII in English...
I knew ubi were only going in half handed, so no i didnt watch it (we all knew what was going to pop in there anyway). I loved the audiences response with AC2 when he used the double blade on the two victims though (sony conf). Best reaction for E3 by far was Final Fantasy14, people were like OMG, %$#@ etc etc then they all shut up and got over it when they found out it was a MMO. That moment was worth it all. Can i just say i hated the voices for FFXIII (english), truly turned me off the game on the spot. Im not a large FF fan, but i would have liked to had seen FFV13, that game looks interesting. I just want to see gamplay to make up my mind. (I like the fact its like present our times and they used shakesphere quotes). etc
Just watched the AC2 trailer. Hopefully, it'll be much better than the first. My biggest problem with the first was Altair's voice acting. Petty perhaps, but I just couldn't keep a straight face through some of his lines.
Wonder if Bethesda will finally make a better animated character now with Ubisoft has almost mastered this act. (Morrowind was fine, but i only gave Oblivion a days play. two games straight with a flawed character walking with a stick up his butt was rediculious shocking) AC is probably the only game i have truly liked (cause of character movements etc). I like seeing some movements in the industy.
Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 are meant to be played in first person. I feel that the third person aspect was likely tacked on at the end to appeal to a wider audience. I'd like to try a game like AC with a first person mode. I have a soft spot in my heart for first person games.
Thwy are meant ot be bother both first and third person, thats why they are BOTH in it! Your taste might be first (and so are mine) but thats against the point. The character model makes the game so very very limited to what you can do....like AC for example. Imagine being able to do that in an TES world, even to a third. The character model as it stands is like playing pong. Which was fine for Morrowind, but not Oblivion and Fallout. (well fallout it was probably okay).
I'm still convinced that both are in it mainly for marketing. (that's why the animations were horrible- they are in Fallout 3 as well, but only with your character.) Thief: Deadly Shadows is a perfect example of this. Thief is meant to be a first person game. First person will always be much more immersive than third. Can you imagine playing Bioshock in third person? They made it third person to appeal to the console players for xbox, but gave it first as well to appeal to the old Thief fans. Problem is, they did it quite badly.
I was just about to mention thief (the new one might be well worth it). The thing with Bethesda modelling even in first person, it feel limited, like doom
Yeah, I know that they're going to make Thief 4 have third person to appeal to younger gamers, I just hope that it comes last so they can focus on other aspects of the marvelous series. Thief 3 was still technically good, but 1 and 2 were great. Maybe the success of Bioshock will make them unafraid to focus on first person.
Yeah, i don't have a great memory of the older ones (though i do know they are held in high respect). The earlier ones took more use of shadows didnt it (over the last). Bioshock will have made a lot of people re-think how games are made. Or i hope so. I wish E3 mentioned a new darkess game....doesnt look like it'll happen (though i gues the storyh rocked but it was hell chuggy)
Another Final Fantasy MMORPG doesn't interest me. XI was as unappealing to me as the other MMORPG's. The only one's that have ever caught my interest are WoW and The Old Republic. The Star Trek one sounds nice but I don't think they've released in gameplay footage so I'm holding off on it. I actually didn't think Bioshock was that great a game (Not for all the hype it got anyway). I had loads of fun playing through yeah, but after that first play through I no longer feel any need to play it again. The game just gets old way to fast. It's nothing but constant "Go here and do this" delivery boy type missions, and the combat never really varied itself up enough to make some parts of the game replayable. Me too. I don't like FF as much either, but I did like Kingdom Hearts, and they're the guys making V13. Sad thing is that V13 is the one everyone in America wants but the one with no multi-platform plans XD. I'm not forking up hundreds of $$$ for a PS3 when only one of it's games it remotely interesting.
I actually brought The darkness the same day of Bioshock (i remember bing pretty happy, but annoyed that i could get a copy from my sister!) I played Darkness for an hour, loving it. Then played Bioshock for an hour loving it, but i then stuck the darkness back in and played it for 3 days before finishing it. I never even finished Bioshock (got upto the bit where you have to dress up as a bif daddy), but i got bored of it. FPS are games you dont really play twice (single player wise). Or are they?
Some of them are really replayable, but they really need to stand out from the rest of the pack. For me, Bioshock was just too long and too repetitive. Sure there were some cool things here and there, and the story though highly based on coincidence and improbability was good. But the game was just too long with too much in between the good parts to be replayable. Goldeneye for N64 really stood out, but there weren't as many FPS' back then. Halo has also stood out for me because of the quality of the game, and the strong level design that keeps at least half the game highly repalyable (the collectables help). Chronicles of Riddick stood out pretty well too, though the last third of the game was very repetitive to me by then. I think most FPS' these days just have a story and single player "just because" and the developers get it done and then focus on the multi-player aspects. That's a shame for me. It's pigeon holed the genre and prevented it from developing in the other direction. Maybe that's why Bioshock did so well. Most FPS' go full on multi-player, but Bioshock focused completely on it's single player aspect and is one of the few FPS with a deep story line. I'd like to see more of that in this type of game. I like multi-player and I really like co-op, but I play single player more than any other game mode.
Actually, just remember Half life. I find that replayable. I hope one day single player gets back to the core of the game over multiplayer.....multiplayer is fun, but i'd prefer to sit down and relax on a wet weekend and get into a deep single player game. I agree on Bioshock beong to long (who would jave thought). I mean i stopped just made an hour of gameplay left. With halo, i did not mind the first (only because it was new generation). I hope Halo Reach tries something new....
The Halo series is the very definition of mediocrity. There's nothing particularly bad about them, it just isn't anything groundbreaking. (Particularly with the sequels) The only reason I got into it at all was for the multiplayer aspect. Now, since most of the Xbox live online community are colossal wankers, screaming kids, or both I'm sort of turned off to that as well. The attractive thing about Bioshock for me was the atmosphere. It's the one thing that they did so well that I've enjoyed playing through it multiple times. (Even if it does follow a static single player, fairly linear story) What FPS isn't linear? I'm going to beat my podium and say it again. Thief. First person stealth, which offers multiple ways to do nearly everything. (For 1 and 2, anyway) Horror/steam punk, non linear, stealth goodness.
I'm cautious with more Halo games. 3 showed to me that the game was reaching its end. it wasn't bad, but the flash of the first two games had mostly disappeared. I didn't watch E3 (lack of patience XD). I usually just read up on it after the fact. Is Bungie working on Reach? I'm gonna be more discouraged if their not, and I know the company said they were ready to move on. I don't trust Microsoft to keep good games good anymore than I trust EA. On the brighter side, the Fall of Reach was a great book, even for one based on a Video Game. Eric Nylund is a writer I've come to like. The promise of seeing other Spartan-II is interesting. It's kind of spoiled story wise if you've read the books though unless they retcon it which would also upset me XD.
Nailed it. I have Halo 3 and Halo wars in plastic. Never ever wil touch Halo 3. I think it had to be a rushed title by the looks of things. Will never ever touch Halo Wars because RTS on a console? no thanks, also it has the worset camera in history of a video game i have heard. And mircosoft are making two more?, geez, talk about $$$ hungry.
Bungie have two Halo games coming out Halo : OSDT (Halo Chronicles) Which is based on multiple angles (characters) to explain a story that happened a few weeks before halo 3) Halo Reach (Explains everything before Halo One, build up) = Epic frigging fail. Sorry, we all know it! Scary thing is, Halo OSTD is out September and Reach is out next year.
I hear a lot of people say that but it's really not true. The problem is most of it's achievements were on the technical side of things rather than gameplay, so a lot of people overlook the game's contributions. The enemy AI for Halo CE was groundbreaking. There were only a few games that had experimented with the idea of enemies working together to kill the player, or guarding their own lives rather than mindlessly running forward to die. The Elites in Halo dodged grenades, strafed, and took cover. Grunts and Jackels were also common to use flanking. Most people either don't remember Halo was the first game to successfully integrate this or overlooked it at the time. So many games have copied this AI (and a few have done it better since the game's release, like F.E.A.R.). There's also the rechargeable health bar, which has pretty much become a mainstay of FPS games. Most people overlook the successful integration of vehicle segments too. Halo wasn't the first to do it, but they did it with a lot more fluidity than other games. Add in good level design, a moderately entertaining story, a a oddly likable hero (He reminds me Clint Eastwood mixed with John Wayne) and I just can't understand why people say the game was mediocre and lacking in innovation . Halo 2 lacked as much in terms of new material, but for me what it's prime achievement was is that it took the Halo CE formula and perfected it. Halo 3, meh. Like I said. The flash was gone. At this point I'd be happier if they let the series just die rather than drag it's previous success through the mud like countless other games (Sonic the Hedgehog *cough*).
I think the reason I didn't really notice much of this was because I was already spoiled by brilliant AI from Thief (1999) I still really like Combat Evolved. My comment was mainly directed at 2 and 3.
Sure they did it first, but they only did it first because they were the first to realise a game with the new technology available. Im sure someone would have done it first given another year if halo didnt exists. (I'm agreeing with you though). Halo was also the first game to do grass really well! I remember the magazines going crazy over it at the time!
I can agree with that I guess. I think what happened is that people started hating the games community. I agree with your previous comment. The Halo online community is horrible. I really can't play it online anymore. I only use the system-link to play with my college buddies who aren't annoying as *bleep*... okay, they are annoying as *bleep* but only because they enjoy pranks too much, and it's really not fun to have to walk out of the shower to find your clothes are gone and you have to walk down a coed hallway with nothing but a towel.
Damm, all this FPS talk. I just remembered a great FPS (I wsih they would make a third. That would be soooo good.) By primitivenz at 2009-06-03 Can only prey.
