Remember when Charles Deetz insisted on keeping the home office/library the same in Beetlejuice? Or when William Parrish met his uninvited guest in the library? A library in the home is like, a portal to the Other Side, yo.
So I got a lot done today. I got an oil change. Got a few things from the store I needed. I returned a pair of Beats headphones I got from Target (they worked great, but I wanted ones that go *around* the ear); unfortunately, they didn't have that kind in stock, so I have to wait and check throughout the rest of this week. But that's okay. I got my 401k plan through my employer set-up and operational. Soon I'll be opening a Roth. Next week I should be able to start getting my monthly allergy shots here where I go to school; they just have to mail over the serum and paperwork. And I made a phone call, and I should be getting my absentee ballot sent to my school address, instead of my home address. I was on time to both of my classes despite having just shy of four hours of sleep and being exceedingly hungover. I was worried that the parking lot was going to be crazy, but then I remembered COVID was a thing, so that was a welcome surprise. One thing that sucks is my vape's been hitting a little weird. Not sure if it's the pods or the device itself but I've tried everything and it's just harsh, suddenly out of nowhere, even though it was working just fine for the past couple weeks. I've tried three different pods now, I've tried charging it. So I went to order something from a reputable retailer online but due to FDA regulations they require some form of ID sent to them as a photo to confirm age, which I think would sketch most people out. I've dug into it and plenty of people do it and there haven't been any issues, and my driver's license does expire rather soon which means I'll be getting a new one anyway, but still. Just sucks. It's a treat, not a need; I might go without for a while until I inevitably pick it back up again. We'll see. Part of me wants to get an extra-head start on homework, but I've done enough today, on so little sleep. I already did a couple of very minor homework assignments that only took a few minutes each, which were assigned by my professors today. So I guess I've gotten ahead there. I'm just going to have some drinks and watch some anime and go to bed. Both my classes tomorrow are online which is nice.
How can people, presumably fans of literature, be so anti-book? Take your ebooks and shove them up your arse... sideways!
I like both, depending on my mood and what I need them to do for me. But I tend to forget what ebooks I have in my Kindle library. Not so for the ones on my shelves.
I don't know about being anti-book, but how are people so anti ebook? You can carry a library in something smaller than a picture book, and it doesn't keep anyone else from enjoying paper books at all. Plus, it's allergy free. Old books make me sneeze for days. Personally, I prefer audiobooks, so I barely have a horse in this race, but I prefer an ereader to a book when I do read text.
I'd prefer paper books but my apartment is too small for more than a hundred or so, and even those aren't really stored for easy access.
Me too, but you can't beat kindle on demand. Soooo many classics for "free." An addendum to the vintage library and period restrictions... it looks like the TV might have to go on the wall above the fireplace mantle. The living room configuration might not allow for it. Wife and I are having, um, discussions. Push button lightswitches are definitely cool @Catrin Lewis. Had a very old apartment with them once... quite charming until the landlord upgraded the electric.
I immediately have questions, but mostly I need to breathe into a brown paper bag over this. My happiness today is the skirt I'm wearing. But it's only because I haven't done laundry in two weeks and I am... low on professional clothing that is clean.
They told us that so often in elementary school I thought people caught fire all the time. I was walking around the halls waiting to be set on fire so I could put the advice to good use. I suppose it's good that I didn't have to.
I remember this same sentiment. That, and crouching down in the hallways with our heads in the corners for the tornado drill on the first Wednesday of every month. Never even happened and I was so disappointed. Even went and tried to chase a tornado in another city on bike just to experience it. Never made it close enough of course, but it was still an adventure.
My Latin teacher got stuck under her desk one time in high school. The janitor had to come help her get out. It was hysterical.
None of those for me... probably because we don't get them in the Northeast. Sounds like a porn waiting to happen. Been an increasingly popular theme of late... not that I pay attention to stuff like that.
Thanks to the DC Sniper, we had sniper drills in elementary school.... As well as school shooting drills... We were required to bring an extra backpack filled with overnight supplies and snacks just in case we couldnt leave the building.
Tsunami drill is simple: immediately head for the highest ground (there are designated evacuation sites all over the country, clearly labeled with street signs) as fast as you can. Pause for nothing, stop to help no one or you will both die. I've seen some absolutely heartbreaking video of people about to be swept away in the 3/11/11 tsunami here in Japan. I don't think any natural disaster save a firestorm really compares. Read some rather hyperbolic accounts of the recent derecho storm in the American Midwest that rather infuriated me on that score, comparing the damage to that of an A-bomb. Nope.
Yeah out on the coast they have tsunami danger maps and evacuation routes posted around. One of the reasons I wouldn't want to live there full-time.
Wasn't an issue in my day. None of those here either. No subduction zones that make them probable. Unless a comet hits, in which case, we're totally screwed. I'm rooting for the comet.
