"And please take notice here in the Sixth Level of Hell, there are only a few cellphones backlighting the theatre. For the real full effect you need to upgrade to Level Seven."
Just got back from watching the movie. Ugh. They mispronounced Aang's (Ung) and Sokka's (Sooka) names, even though the American voice cast from the cartoon can do it perfectly. Everytime a character would blurt, "You are Ung," I'd whisper, "No, you're NOT." M. Night said he didn't care about race because the actress he chose was excellent, but frankly, she just sounded awkward. I think Yue's actress would've been a much better fit. And Sokka's... well, he pulled that same constipated look he does in many of the Twilight films. I did find it amusing when a snow-buried Appa laid his tail on Sokka's head, and he proceeded to yell, "I think he's trying to eat me!" Wrong end, my friend. Meh, I guess he was just mad 'cause everyone mispronounces his name. I found it confusing why the Northern Water Tribe was caucasian, while the Southern were their intended Inuit appearance. I don't get why M. Night didn't think we'd notice the pale Katara and Sokka in contrast to the tan villagers *Facepalm*. As for the harsh reviews, I think that the 4% Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie was Appa and Momo. But, I must admit that despite a bit of race confusion, Zuko's and Azula's actors did well in potraying the characters' mannerisms (Zuko's wounded puppy look and Azula's veiled insanity). M. Night, however, didn't do well with potraying the Earthbenders. It's hard to believe the strong-as-stone captives spent years in the internment camp, never trying to bend their way out of there. He did say that he promised to make Toph Asian is there is a sequel, but let's be realistic. Based on ratings and reviews there will most likely NOT be a sequel. Or at least, that's what my friends hope. Overall, let me quote the cartoon Sokka (and Suki, I think, but I don't quite remember), from the episode "Ember Island Players": "The play was awful. But the effects were decent."
God, the characters were so loveable (except for Ozai and Azula, and probably Jet, and the evil Firebenders). It was so much fun and so amazing to see Aang grow up through the series from a goofy, unprepared kid to someone with the world on his shoulders and a bending master. Azula's downward spiral was perfect, and Zuko's evolution from evil and wanting to please his father to good and doing things for himself was great as well. The characters were so wonderful, it was amazing. And I was a total Kataang shipper. (FYI, there were two main couples you could ship, Kataang, which was Katara and Aang, or Zutara, which was Zuko and Katara.) When they kissed at the end, I absolutely squealed. Seriously, what chance did Zutara ever have, there was no sign of it. Even the minor characters are awesome. Ty Lee's bubbly ditsy demeanor was always fun, Mai's bored sarcasm was hilarious, Jet was a great villain (just intentions, unjust means as Wrey said). And Toph was a total badass. Perfect foil to Katara's sweetness, and together they were awesome. Best friends, amazing benders, occasionally frenemies. Man I miss this show. I hope they do the Legend of Korra thing they have planned.
Never underestimate the logic behind a Shipper's reasons. Actually in most cases its best not to even question it! But there was a scene at the end of the Earth Book where Katara and Zuko shared a moment when they were trapped. Personaly I was with the Kataang shipers. But I think this is mostly due to me almost always picking the relationships that are canon. If the relationship within the show changes, I am usually in support of the new coupling. I am odd that way. Personaly I loved Zuko and Mai together though. They made for an interesting couple. I also loved how Mai was first seen as the bored character and then you get to slowly see what she is all about. When she turned on Azula it was just great.
What is a shipper? EDIT ~ Never mind. Urban Dictionary just schooled me. EDIT EDIT: I watched the final two episodes again this morning before clocking in to work. I was still enthralled. I teared up. I was again shaken at the unexpectedly candid and adult way they showed Azula struggling at the very end of the agni kai, after Katara had bound her hands. I thought it was brilliant. When Aang takes the Firelord's bending away.... It was religious. Spoiler I saw Aang and Katara kiss at the very very end and was overjoyed that he had found something for himself after he had given so much and so selflessly. I needed a hug. I hugged my dog.
I'm particularly indifferent to either pairing, although Zumai (or Maiko, if you prefer) are a very sweet coupling. I did read a fanfiction about a scenario wherein Aang had married Toph (Katara had become firelady, oddly enough) and Toph was asking him if he the only reason he had cosen her was because Katara was taken. It was surprisingly well-written , sweet, and plausible. Except for the fact that there was no Mai, but I digress. Anyway, I can't wait for The Legend of Korra!!! For those linguists out there, is Korra a male of female name? 'Cause it sounded kind of unisex to me. Either way, Nick better not hire some nut like M. Night Shymalan to screw this up.
There is a strong tendency in IE languages for names ending in a to be feminine, but this is not a rule, only a tendency.
Just found out the premise. Korra is a girl, and she's the Avatar of water. Spirit!Aang's going to guide her through her journeys. And stuff. I can't wait!
After seeing this image, I am going to be very disapointed that its probably not going to happen. Anyways I wish the new series would come out like... later today or something because it sounds like it will be very interesting to see how the world has changed and such. lol
Yeah it is fanart. I am not sure where they came from though. Someone posted it on a zelda forum in a discussion of the upcoming show. I thought it was funny and thought I share it. lol
Thats because she does look similar to that. Here is an official screenshot/image of her. You can't see her face, but thats her general appearance.
She looks like a waterbender..... oh yeah that would make sense, that's the next in the cycle. Are they going ahead with the show?
Fans sure hope so. Lets just pray M. Night Shamylan doesn't get a hand in the production. We're all incredibly tired of "Aung" and "Sooka".
Its supposed to come out in early 2011 I think. Not sure exactly, but they released some information on the series at Comic Con I think. You can probably get more details on the new series by googling it. From what I can remember off the top of my head is: Korra has already mastered most of the elements and is working on Air with Aang and Katara's kid or something. She is a water bender The series takes place like 70 years after the events of Last Airbender. Actually thats all I can really remember off the top of my head. I do know that there is some conflict but it isn't war. It will also probably be more of a steam punk type setting.
Hey, I just got back from seeing the movie and here is this thread! Don't...just don't see the movie if you love the anime. Just for starters, the plot is condensed so much bits of the film make no sense, e.g. 'Bring out your elders!' (Why? Because he thinks the Avatar is an old man, but how are you supposed to realise that?) and the mispronounced names. Then there's all the 'it's racist'/'no it isn't' stuff that's been going on. I must say I don't get why all the main characters suddenly became white in the film--except the baddies who were all Indian (subcontinent, not native American). I won't say more, you get the picture. The anime is great though, and has a lot of HUMOUR which seems again to have passed the movie by...
Wouldn't it be: Katara: Waterbender Zuko: Firebender Katara + Zuko = Steambender (since steam is water evaporating under high heat) The Zutara shippers all make sense now!!!
I would like to see what the writers do with the fact that there are really no other Airbenders left save for the children and grandchildren of Aang and Katara. Not exactly a nation per se. The balance of Avatar World is still out of kilter. And isn't balance the whole central theme?
Well, hm.... Steam is a form of water anyway, so Katara and any other skilled Waterbender (like Korra ) would be able to control it. Aang and all offspring thereof would presumably also be able to control it. So whether the Kataang kid comes out as a Waterbender or Airbender (probably air, because if there were no more airbenders the Avatar cycle couldn't continue) they'd be a Steambender. EDIT: Aang's son, Tenzin, will indeed be the Last Last Airbender. I'm skeptical as to how long the new series will run (I'm hearing it will only be 12 episodes *Sigh*), considering from the start Korra will already be skilled in three Bending arts, only needing to learn Airbending to complete her training. Meh, maybe instead of the learning aspect the series will focus more on Korra's restoring/maintaining balance, since the creators did let slip news of an "Anti-Bending" revolt.
