But only by about 10 years. Anyway, I'm a college student who recently decided to be a writer. I used to write in middle school (mostly terrible fanfiction), but I stopped because I believed I was too much of a perfectionist to write, and the poor success rate for writers discouraged me. Insert a 5 year interval. This past semester I took a Creative Writing course--for old time's sake--and I realized that the reason I loved English and literature and language in the first place was because of writing. And looking back, I think that I was going through the motions of enjoying English because of the memory of how much I enjoyed my English classes while I was writing. After that, life changed. One of the things I used to do was visit writer's forums a lot, so I thought, since I'm going back, I may as well go back to writing forums, too. Just not the same ones, preferably. So here I am. Hopefully I'll get to know more of you guys, but that may be difficult, considering how busy life is. Usually, if I'm here, I'm procrastinating on something more important (like a 3 page close reading of an excerpt from Beckett's Molloy). Nonetheless, I'm happy to be writing again.
Thank you. Jay--do you do color guard? I was in marching band in high school, so thinking about the flags brings back a lot of memories.
Serieve? Why does it sound so familiar? I think I spoke to you once? I forgot. Short term memory loss. Welcome anyway!
Hello Serieve, Welcome to the Creative Writing Forums. Please read How to Use the Writing Workshop before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Writing Workshop, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Writing Workshop, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. We also impose a two-week waiting period before you may post writing for critique, to give you time to become familiar with what is expected and how the site operates. The Writing Workshop forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Writing Workshop forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Welcome! I too had a bit of a hiatus from creative writing (schoolwork, ya know...) but I got back into it. It is awesome!
Ah, no, I haven’t. But I’m not sure that you could still call them matches if you broke off their heads, and it is hard to accuse a match that is no longer a match of having pretensions. It could either be the fact that I posted on your welcome thread, or it could be that this is the name I use anywhere (Gaia, Fanficiton.net, Fictionpress [I think…], and others I don’t recall), so maybe you recognize it from some other site, though it has been a couple of years. @Cogito: No worries. @rbg518: That was part of why I stopped, too. I thought high school should be taken a bit more seriously than middle school… little did I know that college would be worse. -.-
