Thank you! Both of these sounded awesome. I actually got into the Death Metal segments from Fleshgod Apocalypse. I didn't think I was the kinda of person to get into that. But I think it does a good job of reflecting those deep feelings we ignore. As for Therion, I loved it. An amazing song and fun to sing. Thanks so much for sharing these two. I will look into more of their work.
This looks like it enters my top 10 for the year. Kiko gained American fame for joining Megadeth, but let's face it, the best Megadeth years were the 80s / early 90s. You know which albums . . . I listen to this solo album and I feel he was under-utilized. The same goes for Loomis in Arch Enemy. Both of them have moved on from those bands, and I'm hoping for a Loomis solo album in the near future. He might do some sort of Sanctuary / Nevermore band though. That would also be great though it's in the power of the vocalist to ruin it all. (RIP, Warrel Dane, the obvious partner, one who would not have failed.) I hope Loomis chooses well. I bought the signed edition of this from Kiko, because why not? Yes, I buy physical media.
Kiko is awesome. He's also an excellent guitar teacher according to my for-real guitar teacher. He uses Kiko, Paul Gilbert, and some I can't remember as his teaching role models.
I'm glad you like Kiko too. He's really something else. That album is so good. It has a lot of shredding and a lot of emotional passages too (from melodic to anguished, the whole gamut), classical/flamenco guitar, along with driving riffs that would really work with a traditional band. Really, it's one of the best instrumental metal albums I've heard in a while. And it's like that from start to finish. I cannot recommend it enough. That guy is a guitar genius.
I’ve gotten into doom metal lately. Songs like this: I want to discover other songs in heavier genres of metal, since I did enjoy the first 2/3rds of Hematopoietic System Tissue and Lymphoid Fail by Last Days of Humanity. Any recommendations?
No one mentioned Powerwolf?? Ooh, this is going to be a fun one to remedy! I've been hooked on these guys for years. I love the gothic image they have, the juxtaposition of reverence and blasphemy, and the overall storytelling. Attila Dorn has such an incredible voice, and listening to him sing in Latin just scratches my brain in the best way. Hands down my favorite song of theirs is "Strossgebet". It still gives me chills. Other recommendations would be, "Sacramental Sister" "Dancing With The Dead" "We Don't Wanna Be No Saints" "Viva Vulgata" "Undress to Confess" "Sanctus Dominus" ...and I could list twenty more of their songs, but moving on. Melissa Bonney's ability to switch from a sweet singing voice to a guttural roar is just perfection. "Odin's Sons" is the song that introduced me to her work, and it's still a favorite. Now for d'Artagnan. I don't think these guys count as metal, but they're somewhere in the rock-genre and I think they deserve an honorable mention. They have a lot of fun songs, clearly not taking themselves too seriously, and I tend to like their covers more then the originals (a rare occurrence). "Das Leid der Musketiere" never fails to put a stupid grin on my face. In their latest album they covered "The Two Ravens" and I can't listen to it enough. I could go on and on about their songs, but I'll try to keep it short: "Chanson de Roland" "Feste Feiern" "Solang dein Blut" "My Love's in Germany" It was so nice to see someone else already add Sabaton to this list! I can't resist contributing with a few more of their songs: "Christmas Truce" "1916" (a beautiful cover of Moterhead's) "Attack of the Dead Men" "The Unkillable Soldier" "The Last Stand" "Soldier of Heaven" "To Hell and Back" "The Price of a Mile" "All Guns Blazing" Their music videos are awesome, they feel like short anti-war/history films.
Nice to see these guys on someone's list. MDB fun fact - I bought the lead vocalist's house off him (still live here). I had no idea who he was. I thought he was a graphic designer or something
You're welcome. I hadn't heard of Last Days of Humanity, I looked them up... goregrind isn't a genre I have ever really enjoyed, I think the only grindcore bands that have really stuck with me are early Napalm Death and Bolt Thrower (Bolt Thrower evolved toward death metal but arguably never fully got rid of the grindcore element). Anyway if you would also like death metal or black metal pointers I'd be happy to give them.
Came across this guy called Denis Pauna on Youtube. Does that whole What-If sort of music, but he understands the feeling of a band pretty well. Did an interesting cover of Comfortably Numb as imagined by Type O Negative. Does a pretty good ZZ Top, too.
