I assume you mean detectives, or people named Richard, rather than Donald Trump and his ... cohort. (Or Elon Musk and his ... Muskovites). ;)

I will look into this some more. I just read something though the other day that makes me hesitate. That this profession is 24/7 on call and is actually stressful when something goes wrong. I donno if I need more of that in my life? But yeah, maybe it's also something you should look into.

Thank you for this. It means a lot. Good to know I DO have skills. LOL. (Yes, jumping over courthouses is a needed skill for sure.)

Good to know that there are a lot of other pathways I can go down. I am going to look into a few. Because for me, I need as many ideas as I can. I have tried to get office manager and have had no luck so far. I have done receptionist and liked it. As for the FBI, I would consider that, too. But it would have to be desk job. Anyway, thanks for the hope and the kind reply. :)

I work for a law enforcement agency primarily focused on marine conservation.

Unfortunately, they've decided to stick me in a little room watching screens instead of letting me do what I'm best at, which is fieldwork.

It's my own fault for mentioning something that happened in the coastguard when I spotted a discrepancy in someone's paperwork and kicked off the biggest criminal investigation of its kind we'd ever had.

Apparently they thought 'ooh, numbers on a screen!' and just ran with it.

Still, things are changing since I threatened to leave.

Mods remove if needed. But I just need to say it.

I didn't sign up for the Cold War 2.0. :(

Nobody signs up or opts out of any war, hot or cold, so you ain't alone. As for me, it doesn't make the top 10 of things I need to worry about, so there's that.

That's true. And thanks. Good to know you're not worrying about it. I will get there soon, too, I am sure.

Suppose they gave a war and no one came? ;)

As for "Cold War 2.0", I think there was a similar sentiment in the late 30s, when World War II drew nearer. Everyone compared it to what was known then as "The Great War" and dreaded it.

I'm worried about it in the geo-political, macro state of humanity sense, but that's a regular day on Planet Earth. As far as things that can go wrong and mess up my world, though, all of that shit can take a number. And honestly, if they're going to launch the nukes, I'll find a nice vantage point with a lawn chair and a six-pack to watch the festivities.

I'm on a diet. I can't eat many carbs and can't drink alcohol.

I started fasting two weeks ago. Basically, don't eat anything after dinner until noon the following day. Gives you a good 16 hours to digest and eliminates all the late night snacks that sit like lead in your belly. It was very difficult at first, but has gotten easier. I dropped 6# the first week and 3# the second. 20-ish more to go.

I haven't stopped drinking but have dramatically cut that down to maybe 3 days a week. I plan that out ahead of time. My wife and I went out Saturday, so that meant drinks. Then I was like, okay, I'm going to wait to Wednesday before I drink again. Then maybe the Sunday afterwards, etc.

All of that I can stick to. It's not never snacks or carbs or sugar or drinks or all that fun stuff. I can still do all that but only in these designated times. The fasting is much more difficult than the not drinking for me. And you feel a zillion times better in the morning. Even compared to one or two glasses of wine. A hangover is obvious, but you don't realize the difference until you refrain.

Having said all that, it's 48 minutes until I can have a Manhattan and my mouth is watering.

I've been doing intermittent fasting for a long time. It gets a lot easier, especially if you switch to a keto diet (which I'm also doing). After a while on keto hunger switches from being powerful and insistent to being a very distant negligible signal you can easily ignore. In fact the only way I know I'm at all hungry is I hear my belly growl, and I've trained myself to like that, by realizing it's the only time you know you're losing weight. Ok, there's a faint phsyical sensation of hunger, but it's extremly mild.

Every so often though I break down and have a cheat meal or a full cheat day. Yesterday was one, and I gained 3 pounds. Gonna have to work it off over the next week or two. I drink whenever I want, but I don't drink much. Maybe just like two shots, usually in milk, because no soda unless it's a cheat day.

That's exactly what they make the fasting things for. I still eat the pasta, but when I'm done with dinner, that's it until noon-ish the next day. And it's not like a timing cutoff thing either. Like, we're going out at 8 tonight so I probably won't be done eating until 10, which is totally fine. And I'll do the apps, entrees, dessert, and everything. But then that's it until tomorrow, but I'll probably take it easy. Since I've started this whole thing, though, I find that if I gorge myself, I feel bloated and sick, which is how normal people feel. By problem is I can eat indefinitely and pile snacks atop snacks atop snacks until I can't breathe.

And my wife just called me to say she has to work late, so there goes the 8pm rez. So I poured a nice tequila negative two minutes ago and am happier than a pig in poop! Reward drink after 4 days of abstention! I think I'll pull out the chainsaw and trim some dead branches in the dark on the top step of the ladder in my flipflops.

Years ago I developed hepatitis of no discernable etiology (turned out I was one of the .01% of people who develop hep while taking a particular medication). When I went to the hospital, one of the first things the specialist doc asked was, "How much do you drink?" After due reflection, I said that I thought I'd had a margarita the previous summer. So he asked my husband the same question about me. After due reflection, Husband said that he thought I'd had a margarita the previous summer. Doc apologized for doubting my words, saying patients often lied about how much they drank, but their families never did. I thought that was interesting.

Alcohol is on my Wistful List along with olives, tomatoes, and several other common foods and beverages. People seem to get so much pleasure from partaking of those things and I. Just. Don't. An occasional teaspoon of good whiskey or a yearly margarita with Mexican food is plenty. I'd rather starve than eat an olive. Haggis was okay, though. No doubt the one I had was free range, freshly hunted, and immediately prepared right on the premises. :)

Many people swear by the fasting diet and enjoy great results. I've tried it, but I found it too challenging because I pigged out in the small window of opportunity. Nom... nom... nom...

I now take a couple of spoons of apple cider vinegar and some fresh ginger in water on an empty stomach. I wrote about it here . I try to maintain a low-carb diet, follow the 80/20 rule, and eat smaller meals.(). And most importantly, exercise 30 minutes after each meal when possible. I think the exercise is a gamechanger.

So ... (warning, long story) ;)

A couple of days ago was my birthday. This year it was very, very low-key, because all my friends were away, my parents were away on holiday (and came back on the night of my birthday), and my sister's family were going away up north to celebrate my brother-in-law's aunt's birthday.

Besides which, I was house-sitting for my parents, and they were coming home from holiday but with COVID ( !!!), so I had to clear out, sharpish. So I did my usual working-from-home bit, tidied up the house, drove back home to my flat, unpacked, replugged my monitor back to my computer -- and had to pull the computer out to get a better look at things -- and, because my keyboard was plugged into the computer, it fell on the floor and the space bar was smashed. (Of course it did).

So there I was, bone-tired, with no keyboard, and it was getting on to 8:30pm, and having to get up the next morning and work-from-home again ... and it was my birthday.

Luckily I had internet connection and was able to look up an office shop in the vicinity that had keyboards for $20. But by then it was 8:45pm, and they were closing at 9. So I got in my car and drove over to the office shop and walked up to the girl behind the counter and she said, "Yeaaaaahh, whaddayawant?!"

(... wait. That last bit is from "Albuqurque", by Weird Al). :D

Anyway, they sold me the keyboard ... 20 bucks. Meh.

On the other hand, at least my sister remembered my birthday, and invited me over the night before for pizza and presents and such ... ;) ... and my parents called me from the airport, on their way home, to wish me a happy birthday ... and I'm sure that once my parents' COVID clears up, there'll be something. Of course I don't mind. Their health comes first. It's the thought that counts.

And oh yeah, the cat woke me up on my birthday and demanded to be fed.

So how was your day? :D
