i'm unqualified for all of the jobs i apply to because you need experience. the only way to gain experience is to have that very job (internships are usually unpaid, which i can't afford, and generally only go to undergrads anyway). this means you have to know someone to get the first job so that you can get the experience, and i HATE that... i really want a career, but since i don't know anyone in that field, i'm just not going to get into it. period.

i need a career. i have to depend on myself. and i like "comforts" like being able to go to the doctor when i'm sick or being able to turn on the heat when it's cold. i have a job right now that ends fairly soon, and i've been applying for a long time and no one is willing to take the risk to hire me to find out that i'd be hella good at the job. because even though i have education, i have no experience.

at this rate, i'll have to go back to doing jobs i hate (teaching), just so that i can have an apartment, money to buy food, and live somewhere with public transportation because i doubt i'll ever be able to afford a car. but even then my years are limited (hey, i was only hired before because i was young and western - i'll be passed up by younger peeps soon... i'm 27 btw. 30 is pretty much the cut-off... )

i'd love to have a job i liked... or even just one i didn't hate... no such luck :( no luck at all.

ETA: another ton of money down the drain b/c my masters degree won't do me any good. so much for getting a job in the field i study for... why did i bother? what a waste of money... i could have bought a crap-o car and been able to afford insurance for the last year with all i paid for school and books for studying for a job i'll never get.

Kanga, just hang in there. The job market is slowly turning around and with your masters, someone is bound to hire you soon. Just keep putting yourself out there, be persistent. My sincerest good luck to you. :(

I'm trying to put together a short story and it's just a complete mess. I'm trying too hard and blending way to many ideas together and the result is a jumble of unrelated sentences. Ugh. I think it's time to delete and start over.

I saw my boss...I mean FORMER boss...last night at the local diner. She sat about as far away from me as she could. Don't know if it was on purpose. I didn't see her until I was leaving. Probably a good thing. It put into my head...what would I want to say to her? I couldn't sleep last night...so I composed a long letter to her in my head. I don't know if it was therapeutic or just dwelling. Anyway...I didn't get to sleep until after 1am. I just lied there in the dark composing this letter and crying quietly. I haven't been depressed and messed up like this in YEARS. I don't know if I can bounce back this time.

It's still a fresh wound, Carmina. It will heal. As for your former boss, it's her loss. You'll find a better job now that you are free of that one, one that won't have your constantly bored and frustrated. One without crazy malodorous bag ladies.

What's your masters in? What kind of job are you trying to get? (I didn't read back, so maybe you stated it in an earlier post.)

I just met two of my favorite history professors from last semester and last year and I was struck with sadness. :( I miss having them. Their sheer enthusiasm, their ability to bring a chuckle to the class.

I love my professors now, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I wonder why I couldn't have those two professors again for the second semester.

It just doesn't stop! They cut Steve's hours. I honestly don't know what we are going to do. Start renting out bedrooms? I have been really good about not crawling into a bottle of Ativan...but I don't know how much more stress I can handle.

We actually did that, rented out one of our rooms. It worked out good for a while, but now we found out our renter is moving... and have to look for someone else or lose some of our income!

criminal justice is my masters, but i don't wanna do administrative/legal assistant stuff... i wanna do the big job. i wanted to get a federal international position (and eventually move up to doing stuff to promote international interagency cooperation and awareness to fight human trafficking in both origin and destination countries). it's a far-fetched dream for someone like me, and i guess i just aim too high. i can't change the world and maybe i can't do anything about the problem at all, but i can help... only, no one will hire me :(

ETA: it's the end of the workday, but it's been raining all day and it's continuing to pour (the kind where it's impossible to see even when your windsheild wipers are at full speed... not my car, btw, just no carpool today so i got to take the car) and i know all the streets are too flooded so now i gotta just wait here at work... i hope a break in the rain comes eventually...

Maybe you should write an op-ed piece for one of the DC papers about inter-agency communication failures. Government obviously needs someone capable of connecting the dots...i.e. getting agencies to standardize and expedite the flow of information. After a few well placed op-ed pieces, they might come looking for you on a consultant basis...big bucks in that. You just have to get their attention by making a public spectacle out of their recent failures in communications about terrorists. BTW - politicians know the best way to silence effective critics is to hire them! LOL

Hello all - if this is the forum to seek some solace - I feel a bit guilty, based on some of the more serious things posted (Carmina loss of job/husband hours cut; 67roos' with career turmoil;) - but here's what's on my mind tonight:

My sister had to take my 87 year old mom to the emergency room. She has pnuemonia (sp?) - Hospital has her on IV's - I'm pretty sure she will do fine - always does - survived cracked vertebrea, breast cancer, stomach cancer and then after the stomach cancer surgery a serious infection due to some leakage thing. So she's a tough old bird. And truth is - she's lived a long, wonderful life. But it's heavy on my mind tonight.

My oldest daughter is getting married in July - my mother is so looking forward to it - Lauren is certainly one of my mom's favorites.

Not asking for advice - just needed to type this out.

For the last three months I've been stuck in someone else's shadow. Today, it ends. The review for my pantomime came out today. Although it was a good review, I'm only mentioned to make HIM look better. Three months of HIM being better than me at everything I try. No more. I'm not HIS ****ing sidekick.

I disagree. I think it's impossible to aim too high. You just need to be realistic on your path to get there. Map it out. Start at the bottom and work your way up, one step at a time. You might not get there, but you can't aim too high.

Do you have a mentor from your program? If so, use him or her. Start taking people out for coffee. Ask for advice from people you admire. Flatter them. People want to help, trust me.

Contact the HR dept of where you want to work and ask them about other positions available. Ask if you can come in just to meet with someone. Just get your foot in the door.

Can you meet with someone there about an article you're writing or researching? Again, anything just to get in and start a conversation.

A career will happen, but you need a job first. With that job, you win people over with your ability, drive, dedication and personality. Then, you move up.

You can do it. Don't regret your masters...you'll be glad you have it once you land that job! :)

Tired of being shut down for speaking my mind. How is it that I am usually the one being singled out?
Tired of being fat. How can 800 calories or less / day result in a two pound gain?
Tired of all the **** life likes to throw at me. How much more can I take?
Tired of being sick. How many pills will I have to take before my teeth rot out?

    Lesson of the day:

I guess I should just keep my big, fat, obnoxious mouth shut. I'll hate myself forever, but I guess I always will. And at least everyone else will be happy.

No, that's what they WANT you to do. By all means, talk. Don't let the system keep you down.

Great people like MLK are well remembered because they refused to keep their mouths shut (and rightfully so) about things they wanted to talk about.

I'm not a doctor, and you should talk to a doctor about any diet plan before trusting the word of someone online, however, from my limited knowledge, the simple answer is that that's too few calories. When you eat too little, your metabolism changes as your body goes into starvation mode, which is mother nature's way of dealing with cyclical famines. Your body will then no longer burn off fat. This is especially dangerous when combined with exercise, as your body will pull calories from muscle rather than from fat. If you want to lose weight, depending on your individual situation, you may have better sucess with a moderate diet including the proper number of calories (not too many or too few, though I don't know the numbers, you can look them up) and a diet which includes plenty of vegetables, protein and fiber, and (when you're eating enough) moderate exercise. Again, talk to a doctor before you take anyone's advice online about diet--including my advice. But do look up information about calories (as in, too few) and its effect on metabolism. I suspect that may be where your problem lies.

You didn't mention your current weight, so I'm going to double-stress the importance of talking to your doctor. For all I know, you might be many hundreds of pounds overweight and in need of serious medical attention--or underweight, mistaken in your notion that you're fat, and actually anorexic and in need of serious medical attention. Whatever the case, for your particular needs, your doctor knows best. I'm fairly certain, however, that 800 calories a day is not enough, and liable to put your body into starvation mode.

    Best wishes!

    Charlie

Edit: A quick google of "How many calories should I eat a day" finds recommended calorie calculators for weight maintenance and for weight loss. Those sites warn: Do not consume fewer than 1200 calories a day except under the advice and careful supervision of a doctor. I've also read that you shouldn't attempt to lose more than about 1 or 2 pounds a week (I'm not sure how that translates to metric, for non-USA folks.) Too fast weight loss isn't healthy for most people and can't be maintained.

Because other people feel the need to single you out. You just need to ask yourself why - it's usually not a fault.

Lydia. :( I hope you feel better.

I had a cold for the past three days. Now I'm all better, but my mom's got it now.
