I'm sorry about your work problems. You've really got to hold onto your sense of self worth now. It didn't seem that you always enjoyed doing your last job, right? It sounded like you were overworked before, doing a job you were unsuited for and unappreciated in.

So really, so far you're the winner. You deserve better than they were offering you.

The money angle isn't at all a small consideration, of course. But I guess that you are pretty resourceful and have a lot of different talents, so that you'll find another job. I don't know what prospects are like in your area or what experience and qualifications you have. Is there any possibility of a few months training course, like some kind of diploma in something which would increase your chances?

With luck, you'll come out of this doing a job that you prefer anyway. Sit down now and write a list of all the qualities you have, and your work experience, that would make you a great person to employ. Read it out loud, give yourself a few days holiday, and then start looking. Some of the worst looking jobs I took on as a student were the best.

Are there no jobs of any kind where you are? Not even part time? And sometimes voluntary community work can lead to inner contacts, so you can get into paid employment in that area. My sister's husband offered himself as a carer in a retirement home when he was made redundant, and within a few months he'd got a position fully-salaried. He works full time there now. Grab whatever's going--look on it as writing research.

Best wishes, and take care of yourself.

I have a headache that won't go away and sleep doesn't help. I have a doctor's appt March 1st with someone I don't know (which is good - psychatrist), and I'm seriously considering changing doctors.

You really need to have this checked out by a medical doctor.

I had a friend who had a headache that wouldn't go away. Turned out to be a brain tumor. That doesn't mean that that's what you have... but it could be something serious.

    Best wishes...

I get migraines, and sometimes I go to bed with a headache which has become even worse by the time I wake. The tablets I was prescribed ended up triggering the attacks, so I was taking a stronger and stronger dose. In the end I had to go cold turkey. I think codeine is one of the drugs than can do this, perhaps your problem is something similar.

You have my sympathies Carmina. I was laid off--twice!--and it's been a difficult road to travel. I don't know what your situation is in your country, but in many EI/UI benefits are mandatory. Check your old paystubs to see if you paid in or if the company did or both. Even if they claim they don't do that, check with your local government to see what they offer, since the employer might be pushing you off or misinformed. At the very least the government might be able put you in right direction for training, support and job opportunities.

Take a little time to rest, recover and then throw yourself into the business of getting a job. It's painfully hard and I've shed more tears than I can count over it but in the end I've found something suitable. So don't give up! Get your CV/Resume in order, call references, prepare a cover letter, get in contact with friends, family, former coworkers, everyone you know. Check websites, call companies, pound the pavement if you have to. Aside from a calculated search, nothing's more effective than persistence. As for calculated search, I mean you must always keep looking everyone for work, but don't send out generic resumes. Always tailor the resume to the job you're applying for and see if you can get names and numbers of HR, hiring managers and those who are responsible for the hiring decisions.

I know how terrible and long this process is. But you cannot give up. That's the most important thing. It will happen, take it from me, but it just takes a very long time.

Thanks for the advice, Charlie. I'm not sure what it was, but it's finally gone away today, thank goodness. :) If it comes back I will be getting it checked out, or at least talk to my doctor about it.

    Great news! :D

I was assuming, by the way, that you had tried normal, traditional over-the-counters. The most common being those that contain aspirin, or acetaminophen (like Tylenol), or ibuprofen (like Advil). Those are the first things I try to cure a headache. Off-brands work just as well and are cheaper, so price compare.

I also discovered that I get a headache when I don't get my daily dose of caffeine. I drink enough coffee every day to be considered a "caffeine addict."

But when traditional routes don't work, absolutely, see a doctor!

This has nothing to do with RL, but when I loaded up "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" and made a new character, all the NPCs were hating me. :( I had done nothing wrong and everyone hates me, calling me an "Imperial dog" and saying, "I don't have time for you."

Why are NPCs so mean sometimes?

I want to write a story, but every time I sit down to write somebody is making lots of noise in the dorms and I can't focus. Irritating.

Hello. Tough night. A few hours ago got word that one of our employees killed himself. Unbelievably tough for his family - he was just 35. Survived by sister, parents - I think a brother. If anyone was looking for a family to pray for tonight - this is the one.

And even though he is a new employee - it's a "for whom the bell tolls" thing - and our company will feel the loss. So sad.

Arranged to have grief counselor come in tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, had made arrangements like this a couple of times in last 20 years. It's a good thing to do - the right thing to do - but tough to get through.

We are indeed just fragile bits of protoplasm - as George Carlin said.

I will pray for that family, Doug.

Pain hasn't gone away. :( It comes and goes in random bursts of strong pain in my tummy and I want it to go away. :(

God, Doug, how sad. My thoughts are with his family, as well as any coworkers who were close to him. What a terrible thing to happen. :(

And Em, I hope you feel better! Stomach pain isn't fun.

The fear of getting fired for a mistake that wasn't even mine is a pretty bad one. :s
