Ha! Well, when he walks in, just have "Baby I'm Worth It", blaring. Let the kids free range. And grab a book of some sexy poetry. Life is good...And in the Name of God, have some alcohol on hand..

My point: It's all about mind control, not yours -- there's...

Oh no, that sounds really stressful :(. Can you talk to your closest manager/team leader? Or do you have some kind of development channel through which you can send feedback? 'Cause sounds like what you're struggling with now not only hurts you but is not good for the business either (not because of you, but because of the way they've set up the process and coordinated things).

No, I wasn't speaking of migraines at all, which I fortunately don't suffer from. But I know quite a few people, men and women, who do. And as you say, they bring people to their knees all right. Fortunately these days there are medications they can take to stop one just as it's starting. Here in the UK, I believe the popular one is called Imigran. Even so, many people still get hit with them. One of the doctors I used to work for got them several times a year. This guy was a workaholic, and would only take a day off if something nailed him to the bed. I think the migraines did that.

Andrae, maybe it's time you start looking for a job with another firm? I don't mean leave the job until you land a new one one, but just knowing you've made the decision to leave will immediately reduce your stress. It's true that it's easier to find a new job if you're still working in your old one. You can make up some reason why you want to change when you get asked at an interview ...you're a creative guy, you'll think of something. Nearer to home, better hours, nicer food ...whatever!

The good thing about a 'job' as opposed to a 'career' is that you can step back from it, and not feel guilty if you want out. There are lots of supermarket chains out there that treat their employees better than that one does. I'd start looking, if I were you. And as soon as you do that, you'll mentally rise above the stress and just do what you can as well as you can. Don't let a bad job drive you over the brink. You're normally an enthusiastic, reliable, good-natured and hardworking person who doesn't expect the world to hand you everything on a plate. You know you have to work hard for what you get, and you do that. So don't let a bunch of twerps change your great attitude. Just take care of yourself, and start looking elsewhere. Because you have a job now, you don't need to grab the first thing that appears. Just wait till a better one comes along ...and go for it.

And yes, I've done exactly that in my own life, several times. And never regretted it.

I think stumbling onto the fact that being surrounded by techno zombies has made me wonder about our species ability to survive. I love my country and all the liberties that come with it, but really worry for my fellow citizens.

Also when did being a divorced male become a bad thing? Only reason I ask is it seems to equate me to being somebody else's garbage, and I am not the one who screwed up my marriage to begin with. If anyone can offer a reasonable explanation to this disturbing ordeal, I would be only to eager to hear it. Thanks. :p

Those who seem more attached to their phone or ipad, and not really aware of the real world around them. Seem to favor the digital world over the real one.

Oh god. Right of course I should have twigged, yes it is sad. I love my digital world, but if I am out and about, I leave that phone alone hah!

Not sure who you're hanging out with, but maybe you just need to surround yourself with less close-minded people?

But I mean, there's nothing inherently good about being divorced, either. It's just a thing.

The day after payday my card got cancelled due to a fraudulent transaction in the US. Now I have lots of money but to way to get at it. I need to borrow money until I get a new card.

And no, I'm not going into a branch.

Why not? Branches don't bite. At least the branch I visited last didn't bite me. This is exactly why branches shouldn't be abolished. Occasionally you do need them, even these days. It's nice to have more than one way to get at your money.

Lol. Just walk in there, all high and mighty, and be like, "Hey. Here's my account number. Give me some money so I can buy all the things."

Aye, but I bet you got your money in the end!

Anyway, glad your friends were able to come through for you. It's damned annoying when a card gets hacked. It's always a backup plan to have more than one account with more than one card, or even have a small account at a different bank, to use in emergencies. This hacking happens far too often for comfort, doesn't it?

The second time for me. When I get my card I'm setting up a second account with a different bank for exactly that.

They really enjoy shutting my card off for "suspected fraud." So I call them, and I'm like, "why did you shut my card off?" and they say something to the effect of, "Well. Someone spent a lot of money at this so called Target on Saturday. Was that you? Or, here -- someone spent $14 at Whole Foods. Obviously, we had to shut it down."

So, my rent is late due to grocery shopping. Brilliant.

Oh, that would drive me mental. Fortunately my bank is excellent at catching fraud, but they don't harrass me for ordinary purchases. I always let them know if I'm going to be away somewhere on holiday, or am going to spend a lot of money on something unusual. The only time they got it wrong was the first time I reserved a bus ticket online, which cost 50p. No sooner had I put that through than I got a call from them. They said fraudsters normally try out small amounts of money that won't be 'noticed' by the legitimate account holder ...things like bus booking fees, or phone calls, etc. So that triggered the call. But once I confirmed I do reserve bus tickets online, they've never called one back. They've certainly never stopped any real purchase I've made. I think they're damned good at this, actually. It's a fine line between being too vigilant and not vigilant enough.

    YA fiction!

It's taking over the literary world!

My favourite genre - futuristic dystopias - is fast becoming synonymous with the damn YA market!

Why can't you stick to your high school / teenage romance crap?!

Would you look at this bullshit? Look at the wall on the side, the clock has to sit at an 80 degree angle in order to synchronize the tick. There's no way to fix it because if I adjust the movement too much the face won't fit on.

But on the happiness side of things I have fixed it so that it rings on the hour instead of at 57 minutes. Well on the hour and 15 seconds, but who's counting?

I changed the power supply in my computer today and now all of a sudden my Disc drive won't open. The blinking lights come on, but no other movement. And suggestions from anyone other than buying a new one?

DISC drive or CD drive? Disc drives don't usually open unless dropped from the 4th floor onto concrete.
