More of a German celebrity: Actor Jan Fedder died of cancer, aged 65. Internationally, he's probably most known for his part in 1981s "Das Boot", where he's one of the petty officers, bunk mates of the narrating Lt. Werner. You know, one of the two that tell all the raunchy jokes.

Don Larsen. Depends on your definition of notable. In October 1956 he pitched the first and only perfect game in the American baseball World Series. Except for that day, he was a sort of journeyman pitcher, never before or after pitching anywhere near as well. But he did that day, which has to give all of us who plug along some hope for that one shining moment.

BTW, I did find myself with a Don Larsen baseball card as a kid; but like so many other cards, it ended up being clipped to the spokes of my bike and eventually gone with the wind. Like the money it would have been worth today.

For Americans of a Certain Age, Jack Sheldon has passed.

    Who?

There are plenty of comments to be made regarding the current state of affairs. Consider them made and move on.

I find these notable: About 30 animals, among them 21 primates (gorillas, orang-utans, chimpanzees), died in a zoo in Krefeld/Germany during New Year's Night. They were killed in a fire. The blaze was caused (unintentionally) by a mother and her adult daughters who had launched a couple of sky lanterns (small candle powered hot air balloons made from paper) which is banned in Germany, for the most part (some areas, like Berlin, still have the theoretical possibility to get a permission, though it is never given.)

    That's notable and really unfortunate.

Genuinely saddened by this. I've read The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, The Hobbit, Unfinished Tales and Tree and Leaf. Christopher Tolkien was the last guardian. A quiet and dignified man with a deep and scholarly appreciation of fantasy. I've memorised many of Tolkien's songs and poems. This is a monumental loss.

Wow. Didn't know who this guy was, but he's a musician who apologized to his audience before dying onstage. Impressive.

    David Olney RIP.

When Terry Jones gets to the Pearly Gates, I'll bet the first thing St. Peter will say to him is, "And now for something... completely different."

We're at the point now when the Pythons are passing one by one. :( :( :(

    Noooo.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we confirm Mr. Peanut has passed away at 104 years old,” said Samantha Hess, Planters Brand Manager at Kraft Heinz. “He will be remembered as the legume who always brought people together for nutty adventures and a good time.”

I'm not sure if this has been covered, but Marie Fredriksson of pop duo Roxette passed away in December 9 of last year. Bugger.

I saw that and I still can't believe it. It seems like a prank article, but a lot of places are reporting it, so I guess it's true. It makes me kind of sad, even though I didn't really watch basketball much.
