You're right. Carter was president, not Clinton. But Mondale worked closely with Clinton as well, since he'd seen the presidency up close in a way that Al Gore didn't, and could steer him away from some of the mistakes that the Carter administration had made. Clinton and Gore valued his counsel greatly.
Michael Collins, member #3 of the Apollo 11 crew and the one that didn't get to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 90. I highly recommend his book, Carrying the Fire. Quite good. Edit: here's a news link.
Lower-division sumo wrestler Hibikiryu has died one month after suffering a concussion during the March tournament. He wasn't a particularly notable wrestler, but for all their power, life threatening injuries are rare in the sport.
Damn, Iain, do you have an app or something that alerts you immediately when somebody of note dies? You're like Johnny-on-the-spot with this shit.
Lol. Now I feel special that I beat you to Michael Collins. This isn't the right thread for this, but you reminded me very much of this song.
This wasn’t one of them, but there are times when I see a death notification of someone I'm not terribly familiar with and stay my hand, to better give others the chance
At one point, Michael Collins was the person who was furthest away from any other living human being (when the Command Module was on the other side of the Moon to the Apollo landing site, he would have been more than 3,500km from the other two).
I used to have his signature. My dad ran into him somewhere and got it for me, but I was a dumb disorganized kid at the time and I lost it.
I guess he could fart and drink beer in the bathroom with impunity. Side note: any stories out there about astronauts having sex in zero gravity? Had to have happened on the ISS space station at least once, right? Seems like it might be a lot of work... and you'd have to balance the, uh, direction of motion to keep from spinning uncontrollably, I would think. Unless somebody grabbed some tie-downs and bungee cords and... never mind.
Thanks for inquiring about membership in the Three-Dolphin Club, your application will be reviewed as soon as we receive your (non-refundable) $500 processing fee. Here's a (legit I believe) link to a copy of an article discussing the possibility. The first I heard of it was in G. Harry Stine's “The Alternate View: The Three Dolphin Club,” which was published in Analog Magazine in April, 1990.
She was craaaaaazy! Tried to kill her husband Chuck Finley (former Angels pitcher) if I remember correctly. Then shorty after that story broke, a PA announcer at a visiting stadium played "Here I go Again" as Chuck was walking from the bullpen to the mound. Well, the PA announcer got fired, but if you ask me, I'd say he deserved a medal for epic trolling.
The Hell's Angels have a baseball team? (sorry, I don't sports and that was the first thing that popped into my mind )
Eric Carle, famous children's author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar among many others. Our kids just got The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse from the library, which is a great story about not being afraid to defy convention.
David Dushman died Saturday. 98 years old. His claim to fame is that on the day the Red Army reached Auschwitz, he drove his tank through an electrified fence to breach the perimeter. At 98 years old, he was also the last surviving Russian soldier present at the liberation.
