Ah! No wonder I didn't remember him from MASH. I always thought Alan Alda was Hawkeye. As for Donald Sutherland, I'll always remember him from The Pillars of the Earth, Salem's Lot, The Italian Job, Citizen X, JFK (1991) ... a very fine actor, and a great loss.
I liked the show too, especially the first few seasons, up until Henry and Trapper were replaced by cheap substitutes, but honestly Alan Alda was always kind of a cheap sustitute for Sutherland.

Breast cancer strikes again. This time it stole the daughter of drag racing legend Pat Musi. Lizzy Musi was a hell of a drag racer in her own right. But having been raised on methanol and 7 second ET cars what other choice did she have? She was 33.
Martin Mull, who was known for TV shows like "Arrested Development" and "Roseanne" as well as movies like 1985's "Clue" and 1983's "Mr. Mom," has died. He was 80 years old.
RIP Martin Mull. (Whoops - yoinked by w. bogart) I loved his tiny tie in Clue, and his sense of timing and facial expressions were priceless. We'll miss you. Time to go watch Clue again ...
Kinky Friedman, noted renegade singer, songwriter, politician, and mystery writer. When I tell you that his musical group was called "Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys" and that his most popular song was "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore," you can get a pretty good take on him. He also wrote a popular series of mystery novels featuring a fictionalized version of himself as a main character. Definitely one of a kind. Texas needs his attitude now more than ever.
She was also in "Thieves Like Us" (1974), "Annie Hall" (1977), "Popeye" (1980, as Olive Oyl against Robin Williams as Popeye), "Time Bandits" (1981) and many more. Shelley was adamant, when she was first spotted, that she was not an actress. Time proved her otherwise, and we are grateful for it. Requiescat in pace.
https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/shannen-doherty-beverly-hills-90210-star-dies-53-1236071496/amp/ Shannen Doherty of 90210 fame, the one everyone loved to hate, which translated into her real life quite famously. Breast cancer at 53. She was as 90s as 90s got.
Her other series was a true oxymoron "Charmed". If even half of what I have heard about her over the years is true, she would be better cast as the wicked witch of the east.
Allegedly she left a list of people she did not want to attend her funeral. That might be fake news, but it's gangster if it's true!
I don't think anyone mentioned writer Edna O'Brien who died at the end of July, in her 90's. Her books were banned around here at the start of her career.
