I just heard about her death. She was a very gifted writer and one of my dad's favorites. I know he'll be sad to hear of her death as well. Forgot to add that my parents live near Portland, so the fact that she was a local writer makes this even sadder.
Very sad to hear this. She was a giant in sci-fi, and her Steering the Craft is a great book on writing.

F. Scott Fitzgerald. Guy died in his 40s. Imagine if he made it to his 60s or 70s and wrote more work in his later years. That would've provided a lot of inspiration for future generations. But, more recent. Hitchens. Funny, I don't know if it's a good thing or a sad thing that I can't think of any more recent people to put on here that are really noteworthy. It could just be I don't know, but I guess I'm thinking in terms of people who are somewhat mainstream. As OP said, people who've entered our public consciousness. I'm sure there are notable people in smaller circles that would fit the bill.
Nooooooooo! John Mahoney, who played Frasier's dad on Frasier. Just got the alert. Age 77. RIP. ETA: From the Hollywood Reporter: He was a medical magazine editor who quit his day job at almost age 40 to study acting. Won a Tony, a Theatre World Award, and got two Emmy nominations. Impressive!
Sad, not only has Alan Alda lost his greatest foil, but I'm starting to suspect I'm getting close to being over a certain age.
Amy Lee, singer for Evanecence, is NOT dead, should anyone come across that headline. Tuesday someone posted ‘R.I.P. Amy Lee’ on the band’s facebook page, and.... well, leave it to silly people to blow it up into something it’s not.
