I've been enjoying the photo-sets presented at this website over the past few days. I just created a Resource for it and thought that for those members who enjoy using visual references for their writing, this might be of interest. http://writingforums.org/resources/the-passion-of-former-days.64/ _____________________________________ I'm a nostalgia junkie and unashamedly enjoy the complex, layered feeling the Portuguese refer to as saudade that this website satisfies. If you're in need of some inspiration for your historical novel or looking for that right place/person/thing visual to evoke the words from your pen, this might be a good website for you to peruse. The photos are well categorized and often shown in complete sets, not just one example of (x) thing. http://www.formerdays.com/
NIFTY, wrey! that view of vegas' fremont st sure isn't what i recall from my stint as a changegirl at the fremont hotel's casino back in '70-'71!
There's this gorgeous photo-set, clearly vintage 50's almost 60's from Life Magazine of a woman and her pet ocelot. The photos in that set fascinate me because #1) super chic, #2) we all pretty much know these days that "The 50's" we think of today is an artifact of propaganda and not really a reflection of truth, which leads to #3) there is something forbidden and shocking to my modernly prudish sensibility that a person would own such a creature as a pet. In a way (probably many ways), I'm 10 times the prig that people "supposedly" were in her day. No snark. Calling myself out on my own paradigm. Thoughts that lead to thoughts that lead to thoughts. That's why I like sites like this.
There is actually a new photographer that has gone back to taking tintype pictures, and did some of actors at Cannes this year. I can't find them though. Onr of them was of Phillip Seymor Hoffman.
Thank you for the link! I am also a lover of former days, both my own and ones that came way before me! I follow a facebook page called Old New York, which features vintage black and white photos from all around NYC. I'm sure there are similar ones for other cities, too.
It was at Sundance Film Festival, that's why I couldn't find it! There are 48 in all I think. http://www.naplesnews.com/photos/galleries/2014/jan/28/current-stars-retro-tin-types-cool-sundance-photos/301631/#section_header
Totally LOVE this site. It's a real time-waster, but heck ...I'm retired! Thanks for posting this, Wrey.
