*thumbs up* I cheered when I heard. If he fails for the Jets, too bad; if he wins games for them, or contributes in any way, good for them. Quinn and Delhomme aren't bad, it's just that they're not in the top tier of excellence, a la Brees, Manning, Favre, Rodgers, Rivers, etc. Maybe that's why people diss them so often--because with all the excellent QBs in the league, you need to be excellent, not just solid or good. *is REALLY crossing her fingers this time* Hopefully the Rams pick Ndamukong Suh (En-dom-ah-ken Soo is how his name is pronounced), because a defensive tackle like that on the Lions, with GB's pass protection...... I can see Rodgers getting slammed twice a year....... Come on Rams, be smart, be smart...... (or let Suh be a bust, although that's unlikely)
I am hoping desperately the Raiders somehow put together a package to trade up for Suh- better than Davis throwing away our pick on Taylor Mays and some track star from UCLA.
No, no, no. Somebody but the Lions, anybody but the Lions, take Suh, take him, come ooonnn....... Unless we beef up our O-Line, Mr. Sexy, I mean my future husband Rodgers will be getting slammed by Suh. (Took me a while to get it right, eh? ) Scary thought. I want the guy to live long enough to marry me see his next birthday. The NFC North is the toughest division in the NFL already (all other divisions only really have 1 dominant team, 2 at most, but the Pack and 'Queens are dominant, plus DA BEARS may, MAY, be up and coming. I highly doubt it, but they could be, and even Detroit could have some hope, you never know.), so I really don't like Suh in it unless he's on our team, and he's too high for that. If only he would make himself fall, or if something could make him drop (a la Rodgers 2005) to our level...... pipe dream, but hey. As long as he goes to some other team, I'm great.
I don't know, the AFC south is pretty dominate also. You have the Colts (they go without saying), Titans (who won a lot with Young starting), Texans (who got their first winning season last year) and the Jaguars (who are usually playoff contenders).
Baseball is starting--I'm not much of a baseball fan, but seeing Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder play together is a thrill. If you've ever watched them, you notice how they are the absolute best of friends, and it's great to watch..... I remember when one of them (Fielder I think) was running to home plate on a home run, and the whole team was gathered around the home plate for the victory celebration. Fielder stomped on the plate and his teammates fell around him like bowling pins, like a shockwave/earthquake effect.
The only good thing about baseball is that it isn't curling. I've used this thread often to rip into the Leafs. I'm not in this post, in fact I'm quite happy with them. They've won 5 of their last 6, and Wilson seems to have finally found players that can compliment the immense skillset of Philthy Phil. It doesn't hurt that our prospects, especially Nasty Nazem Kadri, are tearing up the CHL playoffs. Instead, I'm going to complain about the other NHL team I support. I don't have much to say about them normally, because normally they find themselves at the top of the regular season standings. But always right around this time, something goes sour. I think anyone who follows the NHL can guess who I'm talking about. An 8-2 loss to the Dallas Stars can be written off as an aberration. Were it not so bizarre a score line, and were we not within weeks of the playoffs, no one would mention. But then they continue losing. Tonight, they are letting a Calgary team that could very well be their first round opponent run all over them. It might be surprising to learn that cheering for the Sharks is very similar to cheering for the Leafs. The difference is that with one team, the misery starts in October and ends in March. For the Sharks, the pain has just begun, and could very well culminate in yet another first or second round playoff loss. And yet, while it's so tempting to submit to the negativity, and write them off as chokes I think such talk is premature. This team is big, talented, and deep. They should make a run for the Cup. Sure we say that every year, but surely, they've finally learned to put it all together?
Well, I made the trip to London to watch Town take on Leyton Orient... and experienced a wonderful 2-0 victory. Jordan Rhodes put us 1-0 up on 26, then the much-maligned no.9 Theo Robinson popped up with a tremendous volley to make it 2 and get him to 10 for the season. For once, I went without my dad, meaning I spent the afternoon getting a sore throat with singing my heart out. We 800 brave souls outsang the majority in the ground all afternoon, and it truly does make you proud to support who you support when comments from opposition fans come about about how loud you were, how well-behaved you were, and just how good your team was. Kudos to Orient for not being sore losers (like some we know), and if we don't go up I'd be more than happy to visit again next season.
Agreed! The only time curling has ever been entertaining is in the movie "Help!". Olympic curling? Boring. The Beatles curling? EPIC!
Leafs beat Montreal, New Jersey and Ottawa this week If they'd only had a game against Philadelphia, they'd have completed the sweep of hated teams. I'm just disappointed that, by way of a 6-1 disparity of power plays in Montreal's favour, the refs managed to salvage them a point. But in less happy news, on thinking on it a little longer, this game builds on something I've felt for a while. This certainly is not the breaking point, as there have been far worse examples in recent games. One of the most compelling and yet painful episodes in sports is watching one of your beloved team's brightest lights fade. When you first see the signs, it's easy to dismiss them. Sure he didn't make that play on the boards, but he's never been very physical. That was a bad pass, but everyone makes them eventually. Soon or later though, they begin to mount. The tone shifts from ignoring or excusing the poor plays, and instead you try to identify them as something temporal, a brief blip that can be overcome, whether by rest, coaching, or just playing through it. After all, even- especially- young players are prone to slumps. Reality firmly sets in when the slump doesn't end. When what was once a simple breakout pass becomes a constant threat, as likely to end up on the opposing forechecker's stick and in the back of the net as it is safely into the offensive zone. When what was once the offer of a star prospect and a first becomes next to nothing. The worst part is that in this stage what was once- if not love- at least deep admiration, becomes cold disdain, antipathy, and blame. The name you once proudly bore on the back of your sweater, you cheer when it appears on the list of scratches. I don't think we've reached that level with Tomas Kaberle, but it's close. And it's sad. When I'd rather see a 20 year old, or a 24 four year old traded for just over a month ago rather than a star that once helped carry this team, I know the end is near. Tomas was selected 204th overall. Had he been drafted 2nd overall, he still would have been one of the best picks in team history. Now, I'd be thankful to get a 2nd rounder for him. Sports is a young man's business. It is cruel. Kaberle, I already miss you.
Ouch...... I may not understand hockey, but seeing a beloved player fade is something I can sympathize with. It happens to every team, but that doesn't excuse how painful it really is.
I haven't been bothered to go through the 59 pages one by one but I'm wondering if there's any mention of AFL? I know I'm probably going to get moans and groans for saying it. If there are any Aussies out there they'll know what I'm talking about. Australian Football League for those of you who dont know. I'm a Richmond suppoter "Go the Tigers!" although recently it's nothing to be proud of *sigh*.
Not many Aussies in this thread, so .... Least you're not a Collingwood supporter or i'd be worried. Coming from Sydney means i don't really follow AFL to well (dislike the style of play the Swans attempt). If i'm a fan, it's of the Lions. <- NRL fan though
Keep in mind the international nature of the forum (and this thread), and don't expect the acronyms to be understood by all, or even to be unique. It's bad enough that even the term "football" is ambiguous!
That's true Cogito. Hahah! my Mum is a Collingwood supporter and my Dad's always giving her **** for that. He influenced who me and my brother would barrak for, although if I'd had a choice I'd probably support the Lions Come on Aussie's!! show ya support!!
The NFL voted to change the overtime rules for the playoffs. Now, if the team that wins the toss scores a field goal, they must kick off to the other team and play continues for that possession. However, if they score a touchdown the game ends immediately. Of all the changes they could have made to the overtime rules, this is probably the least dramatic. I quite like it actually. Had it been in place for the Snowjob, justice may have been done, and the Patriots dynasty may never have been.
I think this is a step in the right direction, but I wish it would have extended to the regular season. What I'd like to see is going to something similar to college overtime rules. Except instead of from the 20 (25?) yard line, they start from the fifty.
I like the new OT rules, gives people more of a fighting chance. Anything that makes the game fairer is great. But I have to admit, seeing the Saints soar to the SB with that field goal is one of the greatest games I have ever seen.
I don't really like the college system, I find it a bit gimicky. Then again, I also hate the shootout in hockey. From what I've heard, the league is going to decide in May whether to apply the new postseason OT rules to the regular season as well. In happy news, Leafs prospects are ripping apart the CHL right now. The top point-scorer in the OHL this postseason is none other than future Leafs superstar and World Junior silver medalist Nazem Kadri. Even more encouraging, coming back from a broken femur future Leafs superstar and World Junior gold medalist Chris DiDomenico is the top post season scorer not only in the QMJHL, but all of the CHL. Just think when he's fully recovered what he's going to do. And this doesn't even include World Junior gold medalist Jerry D'Amigo, a future Leafs superstar, who plays in the NCAA. Philthy Phil might have some competition for top scorer in a few years
I'm so HAPPY right now!! MLS season is back! Which means my sport and team are back playing and i get to post in here lol The first sounders game was fantastic! Sounders started off their sophomore season playing brand new expansion team, the Philidelphia Union. For about the first 15 minutes or so Philly was actually outplaying the sounders with most of the game being played in the Sounders half. However at the 12 minute the Sounders scored with a beautiful goal by Evan that was set up by Zakawani. After that the game went straight back to the Sounders. Philly went through lots of cards, ending with 5 yellows given out to them throughout the course of the game i believe (not exactly the best thing to do in your inagural game and season...) which culminated in a red for their defender after he got two yellows for fouling (quite unnecesarily i might add) the two sounders forwards, Ljundberg and Montero. He was ejected in the 40 minute after fouling Montero who then came back with an absolutely fantastic rebound goal in the 43 minute. It was beautidful! For the second half the sounders held on to their lead easily with the game being mostly played in Philly's half a few more quality shots on goal that didn't make it. The game ended with a great 2-0 sounders win. It was one fantastic game. That right there is how to kick off the whole MLS season as this was actually the first kick game. In case you can't tell, I'm quite happy about this
Yay, twin finally posts here! Like a good twin, I read up on the Seattle Sounders. Letting season ticket holders vote is pretty cool--kinda like in Green Bay where WE own the team. (Drew Carey owns them, who knew? ) There's more, but very, very cool. Are the games televised?
I am also glad to see the MLS start up, as it presents another chance for a Toronto sports team to embarrass themselves and the city. Toronto FC add another dimension to the fun with trouble making fans. I hope they finally make the playoffs this year, but I'm kind of worried about hooligans setting cars on fire
That happens?! My god, I've heard horror stories about fans of sports doing bad things, but that's.....
Everything about the Sounders is awesome gi The games are definately televised, though i don't know when or where it would be for you since you are in a different state....
Formula One is about to start up here in Australia (qualifying). If i hadn't got sick i would have made my annual trek down to Melbourne, but for the first time in a long time Melbourne was not round one, so no major. I csn't imagine many people really care for F1 these days. The sport, as much as it tries can't get out of borefest. I still love it though. Or at least like it. On soccer related news; hurry up World Cup!!! I had a dream a few nights ago Australia beat Germany in the first game 2-1.
