I'm leaving for college in nine hours! !!!!!1!!!!11!!eleven I'll be trying to get to sleep soon, but I doubt I'll be able to get any, so I'll be around for a little while longer tonight at least. Our SUV is packed with everything except my makeup bag and my laptop and laptop case. It feels kind of ridiculous, and I'll post a photo of it in a few days. I'm not ashamed of how much stuff I've decided to bring though --a family friend of ours, who is going to the same school with me, brought a U-Haul. Tomorrow is the beginning of the Welcome Week, which is from dawn till way past midnight filled with activities for freshmen and upperclassmen alike, so while I'm sure I'll have time to pop in and out, I'm definitely going to be a lot less active during the first few weeks, like Welcome Week and the first week (and second week) of classes --my first day is on Monday. I have general chemistry and an elective on my first day. By the way, are you actually expected to lug those 40 pound books to class? And any last minute advice from veterans is greatly appreciated!
Get a good backpack. Carry the weight high, and lean forward slightly to balance the load above your hips. And look over the reading material BEFORE each class. That way the lectures will fill in the gaps, and you won't get lost as easily. Have fun, but make sure you get enough sleep.
So exciting!!!! Our little Merc, all grown up and going to college! I hope you have a great start to your college experience. In addition to what Cog suggested, I don't know if this actually helps with the weight or just made me feel better, but I actually used a backpack and then one of those packs with one strap that you carry off to the side. That way you don't have a ton of weight just on your back, you can kind of distribute it .
T minus six hours. I still cant sleep, but I'm not used to getting to bed until 2 or 3AM (it's only midnight here) right now anyway. I'll have to change that, since my earliest class is at 9AM (not bad, but that means I have to get up at 8AM ) four days each week. Thanks, chemistry. I'm bringing two backpacks with me --one is a Jansport that my friend arted on and the other is an old Tweety-Bird denim backpack. The Jansport is sturdier (and prettier), but I'll have to use the Tweety-Bird one on rainy days, because I havent figured out a good way to preserve the ink yet. (Yes, we even tried Scotch Guard.) Tweety is pretty cute too. I'm hoping that my pack wont be too heavy, assuming that I wont have to bring my books to class (just binders and notebooks and stuff). My chem, bio, and Spanish books are massive --at least my elective just requires novels and no textbooks. I'd like to keep them in my dorm unless I'm actually studying them... And I plan on leaving my laptop in my locked footlocker (locked to a bedpost) when I'm in class, to transcribe my notes in later. I'd like to bring my laptop to class, but I'm afraid it'd get stolen throughout the day, and frankly the battery power is weak. (Although I've ordered a new, longer-lasting 12-cell for delivery on Friday, which should help. I think the one I currently have, in addition to being old and weak, is a 3 or 4 cell.) Thankfully it shouldnt be too bad; I was able to score one of the best dorms on campus, which is only about a ten-minute walk from most of the academic buildings, and the main library is just down the street from my dorm. Other dorms are a twenty minute walk, and upperclassmen apartments are off campus. And we have two bus lines which are free for students with IDs --one owned by the campus and one owned by the city. So hopefully I wont have to carry all of my textbooks with me all day...
Aww, thank you. I feel strangely special. I will be around though... just not as often, especially for the first few weeks. I get the impression that Welcome Week is a big deal here, even for the upperclassmen, because there are three big festivals over the course of five days, and then of course there are all the meetings you have to go to and all the exploring of the campus and everything. Most of my friends have already left for school and done their welcome week things, and from what I hear, these are a pretty big deal, and you dont want to spend time hibernating in your dorm room during these first few weeks. Although everyone has had ample time to post photos and update Facebook about how great college is. Of course. Okay, it's closing in on 1AM, and I'm not really tired, but we'll give sleep a shot now.
That's great, Merc!! Very exciting too- won't be another half year or year before I go to college, but it's so close I can bike to it each morning. Anyway, have fun!
To one and to all, Wrey-Wrey will be on Vay-Kay starting tomorrow, Aug 26th, until the 1st of the month in Orlando Florida. Hubby has a convention and I am tagging along for some pool-side chillaxification. Be good!
I've successfully moved in. I just said goodbye to my parents. Saying goodbye to my dog was harder. I cried for like half the drive to school. Cant say anything more about her or I'll start crying again. I feel pretty good here. I took some photos (unfortunately did not get the shot of our fully packed SUV, but I had my parents take a great deal of it back. I grossly overpacked. I'll post some photos of our room soon, maybe. Our room is small and will not win any "prettiest dorm" contests but it is functional and to me it feels like someplace I could get used to. I brought most of my bedroom to my dorm room, because I think it is wasteful to buy two of things. The campus is beautiful. I am totally lost though. I'm leaving for a dorm floor meeting in a few minutes, hence the time to update for a brief bit. xx Cog, I will look it up later, but I'm not sure what a lo-jack is? Have fun on your vacation, Wrey! Maybe I'll see you if you decide to go back to Florida over the Christmas holiday. We usually stay near the lower tip of Florida, on the gulf side, but I think we will visit Orlando and Disneyland (Disneyworld?) at some point this year too. xx Edit: BTW I'm really freaking exhausted. I'm fighting myself to not take a nap right now. I need to get on a regular sleep schedule...
lojack is a company that specializes in recovering stolen items. They are best known for their vehicle recovery system, but they also have a software component that installs on a laptop. If you report the laptop stolen, they enable tracking, and when the laptop is powered on and connected to a network, lojack central tracks the location and notifies local authorities.
I'm not new, exactly... I've just not been active on here for a while! So, hello! It's nice to be back!
