Well, that's my 'huh?' moment. That statement frankly hasn't been established in a scientific consensus.

Unless you're arguing that anything mental is ultimately physiological and therefore biological, in which case cultural dysphoria definitely is also a biological phenomenon.

Hardening back to one of my previous rants regarding hiring, interviews, resumes and all that crap, I have ad up for a manager that got me 20 applications in a day and a half. Where to begin, where to begin?

How about with the ones who are "dedicated" and "passionate?" No good, that's all of them.

How about the ones that live over a thousand miles away? I'm sure they're willing to "relocate anywhere."

How about the ones with no restaurant or hospitality experience? Because I'll totally let them run a business.

Ooh, here's a few that have worked for us before and been fired for dirty things. I'm sure they've changed.

Hmmm... these 4 look AI generated but, hey, can't be worse than humans, right?

    Barf.

I'm interested. Although I do live more than 1800 miles from you, in this day and age, re-location is a snap for the job of a lifetime, especially for someone like me who is passionate and dedicated and looking for a place to hideout. It's true that I've never worked in a restaurant, but it's always been my life's dream. Besides, I've eaten in plenty so I know how they work.

I can say without fear of contradiction that you've never fired me. No charges against me have ever been proven, and all other criminal activities are beyond the statute of limitations.

Furthermore, I am not a robot.

    You could do worse.

    Sincerely,

    GL

I feel your pain, @Homer Potvin , regarding hiring staff. I managed a sales office, but the general manager used to do all the recruitment until I stepped in. He didn't care what grey matter they had between the ears as long as they had short skirts and a revealing neckline. My rule: never employ someone straight from uni because their heads are still in the clouds, and only employ older people with RL and proven sales targets. The older folk did not get pregnant and because the job market even then leaned towards the under 30's market, they were more canny and reliable.

    Good luck with your quest!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I can't work evenings because I suffer sleep apnea, I need $100k per year, one month's paid vacation annually, and to bring my therapy iguana.

Well, you technically don't have to close so long as you don't piss your staff off too much by never giving one of your other managers a break. Doable but difficult. Keep the iguana in the office, $80K and two weeks paid vacation.

Thank you for the prompt response. Unfortunately, I'm just not "feeling it" regarding your offer as it stands right now. Perhaps if you were to fly me out there to experience the ambience first-hand I'd be willing to re-consider. First-class, of course, so that I arrive well-rested and primed to do some serious consideration.

I would also need to sample the various cuisines, especially the wines and spirits.

    Yours in anticipation,

    GL

I just moved and it annoys me that there's still so much unpacking and organizing to do! Also that my chronic pain has prevented me from doing anything today.

How in the name of Anthony Bourdain does a donut shop have an event coordinator?

    "I need some donuts."

    "How many people you got?"

    "About 20."

    "3 Dozen should do it."

I am annoyed that Trump is still a thing in the US. Today on the stand, he said, "I became president because of my brand."

To be fair he’s not wrong, regardless of what you think of his politics there’s no question that he did well at creating a personal brand and selling it to his target audience

I cancelled Netflix today (no more poorly-dubbed Turkish detective movies for @Earp), not because of the two-dollar price increase, but because, though they announced the price increases on October 18th, they didn't inform me by email until today, November 8th, coincidentally (!) the day my payment was made, nicking me for another month's fee. They made another ten bucks and lost a customer forever.

I've had it right up to here with companies with whom I'm just trying to do business treating me like a mark rather than a customer.

I keep thinking the future of business is customer service (real customer service, not the lip service we get from most companies now (or as Bruce Williams used to say, the kind of service a mare receives from a stallion)), but I'm not holding my breath.

It's coming back in a big way. I've pulled as much of my business as I can from the billionaire behemoths and given it to the smaller companies (millionaire moguls?) that emphasize service and personal interaction. I won't do anything with a company that won't meet me in person. Non-starter.

So while I'm here in hospital, my neigbours, not having seen me for several days, decide to call the ambulance service to check on me.

The ambulance service, not receiving a reply at the front door, decide to break down my door.

Having broken down my door and not finding anyone there, they then secure the door so no one - including me - can enter. Now I can't leave hospital until it is fixed.

Am I annoyed? You bloody bet. And I'll bet the neighbours just wanted their Amazon parcel that was left at my place a few days before I came in.

An ambulance service has the responsibility for wellness checks in UK? Law enforcement does it here.

Perhaps ambulance crews should learn to pick locks?

Are the ambulance services state run in the UK? That would give them the authority to bust down doors, if I had to guess. They're all privatized here.

You're going to come home and there will be squatters sitting around a campfire in your living room.

Ambulances are part of the NHS here, but when we say ambulance we are talking about the paramedics which in the states are part of the fire department

however I’d still expect wellness checks to be a police matter

There are both state-run services and private services, although I believe all emergency ambulances are state-run.

The most frustrating thing is that they could have just rung a hospital to find out if I was there or not.

My neighbours are Eastern European, so maybe they just ran whomever would have dealt with it in their home country.

I find it annoying that I have all these things I want to do but my mind is in tatters and my starting engine is only half working. I want to write more. I want to read and research more. I want to recite my stories. I want to be as productive as a bee. Yet here I am listening to music all day. I guess I should be happy that I am able to do anything at all and leave it at that. Contentment and no complaining.
