Oooooo... maybe you're a dead person, like in The Sixth Sense! Only there's no Haley Joel Osment there that can see you. OK sorry, that isn't helpful at all is it?

@J.T. Woody To be more serious, I've noticed there are times when my energy is really low and I become invisible. I noticed it at work once for a few days in a row, and then suddenly my energy was high and I became very animated and did a lot of the talking, and someone else was low energy and couldn't get a word in edgewise. She had been talking over me before, when my energy was low, and suddenly I was talking over her and not even noticing it (except that I was observing it, as we writers do, right?)

I was interested in this weird phenomenon, and it seemed to move from me to her. I kind-of felt bad talking over her, but in a way I didn't—my energy level was in charge and it didn't care. Plus I got caught up in the energy dynamics of the group, which was very high overall. And that made me realize she must have been experiencing the same thing when she was on an upswing.

So I think people generally don't mean to do that. Well, some might, but I really think we all go through upswings and downswings of energy or mood, whatever you want to call it. It changes the dynamics of the group.

People who get on the bus and either put their bag on the adjacent seat or sit on the outside seat, blocking the inside one. How much longer are these inconsiderate fuckers going to use COVID as an excuse for not wanting people sat next to them?

Yeah, I do it, but if seats become scarce I'll move to the window seat and try to put my backpack on the floor under my feet.

Well, obviously, I have no complaints (no, not even me) if there are seats spare elsewhere.

either im really naïve and this SHOULDN'T annoy me
or this coworker is prejudice and i should be annoyed and pissed AF.

This young black guy in a hoodie sat at the computers for a while. then he wandered around for a bit. he asked me if he could use the public phone by my desk, and he called someone to pick him up. he hangs up and wanders around upstairs. security goes upstairs because upstairs called him. after a bit, the upstairs worker emails me and our supervisor a screenshot of the guy's information.
the guy wanders back downstairs to my desk and asks to use the phone again. confirms his ride is outfront. thanks me and tells me to have a nice night and leaves.
so i call the upstairs lady and ask her what he was doing. she says he was just "walking really slow" with his hoodie on. then he went to sit down and read in the (empty) childrens room. then looked out the window for a long time.

i said i spoke to the guy and he was very nice and he happened to be waiting for his ride, and he left once his ride came.
she says "he was just really creeping me out. so i figured if he shot me, at least you and the boss would know who did it" AND SHE LAUGHS!

    WTF!?

Yeah, sounds pretty racist to me. Especially the "shot" part. Sounds like your coworker was genuinely freaked out, but you have to wonder if she'd have reacted the same way to a white frat boy in a cardigan exhibiting the exact same behavior. And we know the answer to that.

Sadly, I see this happen like 10 times a day in my line of work. The restaurant is extremely expensive, but has a very diverse crowd. You'll get a table of old white lawyers dropping a thousand dollars next to a table of young black men also dropping a thousand. Yet somebody will invariably look at the young black men and say "I'm in the wrong line of work," the implication being that the only black people who can afford to eat at the restaurant must be gangsters or drug dealers. And what disturbs me is how casually people will make those comments to me... like I'm a kindred spirit because I'm white. Like I'm supposed to agree with them and return the secret handshake or something. Those casual comments disturb me much more than the overt ones. Every once in awhile a old regular will say something like, "This place is a lot darker than it used to be." And they'll say it in an accusatory way, like I've failed my tribe by not vetting the door properly. Now those people are easy to deal with because they're straight assholes. But the casual, run of the mill, ostensibly good people who exhibit offhand racist tendencies like it's no big thing? I have no idea what to do with them.

To answer this.... We had another guy who wore a hoodie with the hood up and one of those masks that go from the neck up so all you could see is the space from the bridge of his nose to his forehead.
He, too, asked to use the public phone and talk LOUDLY on it.
He, too, stayed for a wile, wandering around and what not.
He, too, thanked us for letting him use the phone before he left.
She says "he was really polite"
And doesnt send about his information as a suspicious person.

We all know what his race was....

Idk, I think a frat boy in a cardigan cruising around a library real slow would be pretty weird.

Once someone on my former rec soccer team invited everyone over for a UFC pay per view event. I was working on a solid buzz and watching a fight, a black dude against a white dude. The guy next to me gives me a nudge and says something like “we gotta go for the white guy, right?” and holds his fist out for a fist bump.

I bump his fist automatically, and as I’m doing it I realize what he said and was wondering if he was just trying to be edgy or not. I casually say “I’m not sure I want to fist bump that” and that was the end of that.

But I’ve always wondered if he was trying to feel me out, see if I was on his white power side.

this bothers me. Why the heck is Chapter 23 bigger than the others?? (note* this is the sidebar on Google Docs. apparently, each new chapter i started, it added it to a table of contents to the side). i mean, it doesn't matter to my story, but my borderline OC brain is like "WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT????"
I tried different headings to make it look like the others, but it just gets bigger, not smaller.

its like collecting the paperbacks to your favorite series and then the author puts out a hardcover and it just throws off the whole aesthetics of your shelf!

grocery store grapes. They're big but they're not very good. No flavor.

Must be a country thing. The supermarket near me sells this huge breed of grape, as big as plum tomatoes, and they’re delicious.

yeah, that’s the kind i mean. Shouldn’t have said no flavor, but the flavor is nothing compared to something like a Concord or a Thompson Seedless. I was just eating some homegrown grapes and thinking about it.

Messy sandwiches. I love a good sarnie, but the enjoyment of eating them is spoilt when they fall apart during the process; take a bite, a slice of tomato drops into your lap. Take another bite and a piece of onion tumbles down your chest, and all the time whatever sauce condiment is on there, finds its way up either side of your face.

The word "fire" when used in conjunction with bows and arrows. I have even seen some well researched historical books which refer to "firing arrows". While fire arrows were a thing, the term "fire" evolved with the advent of gunpowder and firearms when you literally introduced some sort of fire to the weapon to discharge it. Arrows are not "fired" from a bow. They are released.
