I worked at a Humane Society for about two years and continue to volunteer there. There is a stigma surrounding pit bulls that no other breed has, although I wouldn't label any type of dog prone to aggressiveness (I've had pits and labs try to take my head off) so I don't really like the "yeah but chihuahuas are more vicious" response because it's true that a chihuahua probably can't kill you. Pit bulls have extraordinarily strong jaws and are very strong dogs so if you do get attacked by one it is going to be very serious, but that doesn't mean pit bulls are bad. When they are treated well and raised right they are happy, wiggly, smiley dogs. The only time a breed is mentioned in an attack is when it's a pit bull. I once had a police officer call about a dog bite case and said point blank "another one of your pit bulls bit someone." The breed was never mentioned when a dog ended up returned or reported for a similar bite case (which doesn't happen all that often anyway and only happened in this case because he got excited and grabbed the grandma's thin skin a little too hard). I've heard Customers comment "I don't want a pit bull, they're aggressive" "I can't have a pit bull, we have children" "there are too many pit bulls here" and someone even called animal control on a "vicious, pit bull like dog" following her and her daughter down the street. This "vicious" dog that was brought in was a three month old puppy and the sweetest thing in the world. I saw more Chow-Chow bite cases than any other breed. Pit bull bite cases were either a) dog fighting dogs b) guard dogs or c) accidental bites (playing too hard/ never taught manners). This was probably ramble-y but I hate it when people judge pit bulls because so many of them end up in shelters due to this stigmatization and some higher kill shelters euthanize them frequently for this reason. These dogs don't deserve to spend months in a cage because they're "dangerous", they don't deserve to get taken away from their owners because of dumbass breed specific legislation, they don't deserve to be discriminated against by apartments and landlords, and they don't deserve to die just for the crime of being a pit bull. But so many do.
The thing about this, is if you're using a crosswalk, it shouldn't be awkward since drivers should yield to someone in a crosswalk anyway. If you are jaywalking on the other hand, the driver has the right of way, and you could be standing there for a while depending on how busy the street is. But then again, jaywalkers are flirting with getting hit. That brings me to something that annoys me. When jaywalkers have small children or babies with them. Really? I don't care if you're going to risk getting hit, but don't drag your kids into the street when they don't know any better. With all the stories and accounts of bad drivers hitting pedestrians, I don't see how some are so willing to put their lives in the hands of those drivers, just to save a few minutes of time. Even walking in the crosswalk has a risk. I remember when I was walking to school at the age of 16 and was in a crosswalk with the "walk" signal on. I was almost to the curb, when some twat rounded the corner to make a turn. They slammed on their brakes and proceeded to flip me off as if their moronic driving was my fault.
It's not just a gesture where I'm from. It's actually the law (if a pedestrian is approaching any crosswalk, lights or no, you stop) which is why I just keep walking normally. In my experience, it's almost always the women who walk-jog while men just slouch on, by the way.
In my area (suburban), there's not always a crosswalk at every corner. Sometimes there aren't crosswalks at any corner on the road at all. It's usually just an intersection with stop signs, especially in the more residential areas. It also happens a lot in parking lots. Those are the instances I'm specifically referring to.
Other than for political statements, I can't recall any stories of drivers, good or bad, striking pedestrians in or outside crosswalks. Have I not been paying attention or is this another unsupported urban myth? I'm not saying or even implying it doesn't happen, but for the life of me I cannot recall even one.
Dashcam video compilation of a number of incidents here - I've put in spoiler tags because not everyone will want to see it Spoiler
People got hit rather frequently at the crosswalk by my old high school. I remember two instances where an ambulance actually had to be called. And there’s this: “In 2015, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States.1 This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.6 hours.” And from the same article: “almost 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal crash-related injuries in 2015.” And the link- https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/pedestrian_safety/index.html
So, where are the stories? I do not dispute the fact that vehicles strike pedestrians or the frequency. Yes, I could perform a 'net search for the subject, but I posed the subject here and thought someone might read the question and answer it. My apologies to all for asking. I'll think twice before posing a question again.
I suppose I misunderstood (and still misunderstand) what you mean by stories. Just personal anecdotes?
I think @M Phillip is asking where the news coverage is. My guess is that crosswalk fear mongering isn't going to generate that much media attention.
Back to the topic! Steam censoring player names like Thor and Scum Bucket. I'm sure it will be absolutely devastating for mommies' and daddies' little darlings who are playing games where people beat the shit out of each other's avatars to see words like 'ho' and 'cum'. I'm kind of on the fence whether I should or shouldn't be annoyed by this.
In the local papers - its only national news if its a golden haired child or a sweet old grandmother Here's one from our area recently http://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/local-news/homeless-jamie-27-killed-hit-547749
Hmm no. Also, you can't be called anything like 'Ballistic Boss Knight', or at the very least it's going to look like this: ****istic Bo** K***ht.
That pedestrian crossings are placed at junctions and have the green light at the same time as actual traffic rounding the corner is about the most moronic system I've seen, ever. And it's used in the Czech Republic and, I believe, Germany? I know that in theory, it's placed there because cars should be at their slowest at that point, but that's just relying on drivers being sensible and law-abiding and, while most of them are, accidents usually happen because some are not. Placing a crossing at a point in the road when drivers have limited vision is just stupid.
Vapers. Especially large group of them all huffing on different flavors. At least smokers usually stand a side a bit or ask if you mind, but vapers? Hell, just because your smoke smell like strawberry doesn't mean everybody wants to breath it! ...and before anyone tries to be smart - yes, I stayed out of their way as good as I could, there were just so many of them!
I agree with you. Vaping seems to be pretty much synonymous with bad tattoos and over sized gauges and pretty much screams "I would be smoking weed, but my allowance isn't high enough." That said, I have a hookah, but it's not something that gets inflicted on unwilling participants because I just need to be that cool.
Vaping stinks but I'd rather walk through a cloud of vapour than a cloud of cigarette smoke. Smokers are more inconsiderate IME.
A friend of mine has got one of those huge brick size vapes that produces enough vapour to fill a cathedral. After he's had a drag (or whatever the vape equivalent is) his voice changes to that of a baritone with a bad cold. That can't be good.
I agree, but at parties (the ones I frequent) smokers usually keep to their side or they ask if it's okay. Vapers even do it inside the house! It's harder to stay away. Otherwise I'd rather pass by a vaper than a smoker any day.
I'm still not all that sure what vaping is or if it's an "all-safe" version of smoking (that, yes, probably tastes better) but... I just don't see the point. And in the case of your friend - no, doesn't sound good!
On the weekend? I wore jumper & underpants for about three hours today, and flip-flops. When you've been toiling all week it's a little liberation. Then I was summoned - to the shop - 'off you go,' so pulled on the trackies, and was back to reality. Also, phenomena is probably a cat owner thing. All cat ladies on TV wear stuff like that/and like me, the Catman.
Agreed. The burnt tobacco smell clings to and wafts off of smokers, and because they smoke all the time and fill their noses and lungs with the garbage, the don't even realize or think about how they smell to others. Some smokers you can detect before they even enter the room, it's that bad. I don't like the smell of vapes either, but at least the smell isn't so pungent that it forms an aura around them.
