I have noticed that people in general tend to be quickly annoyed and bored with hearing anything about all the discrimination that's so embedded in our society that we often don't even see it until it's pointed out to us. UNLESS it's one that they are on the receiving end of. Then, they get it and find it worthy of correction indeed. It would be nice if they could connect those two things and get it that it's all the same thing and nobody likes to be marginalized.
Yeah, I wouldn't force anyone who calls themselves "hen" to pick one or the other. Sorry if it sounded like that, it's not at all what I meant.
Also, I have never heard of "hen." Is it a UK thing? What I thought of was "hen lit" or "hen party," which is probably the opposite of what "hen" is getting at. I guess it means either "he" or "she?"
carly I think they are talking about scandi pronouns In the UK (north) some dialects use the term Hen for a woman like others might say love or dear - weird names for men include Cockbod, Cunning, and Shag ..... Hinny is used for both sexes
I agree about Starbucks. It goes like this: There’s no power in the apartment right now and Starbucks is one of the few places here where you can park yourself with your laptop and work all day with just a token patronage of what they offer. Puerto Rico has a strong, rich, deep coffee culture. Starbucks coffee is laughable to us, but local coffee houses where you can get a real cup of joe don’t let you just while away the day there on your ‘puter. So... here I sit.
First of: yes, hen is the Swedish gender neutral pronoun, for anyone confused about the subject! Cabbage: You're example made it clear what you meant. I was just reminded of the date and it sort of fitted the discussion AND things that annoy me Carly: That's the thing. People have tried to get the word into the Swedish dictionary since the 50's if I remember correctly. There is a need for gender neutral pronouns. It helps people - and it's an easy thing to use to show respect if someone is asking for it. But no - if we start using gender neutral pronouns for people who want it (because they for some reason don't fit into/want to choose from the two that are presented to them) - then our society is apparently falling apart according to people. Or people are being too political correct, or FEMINISM, or whatever people like to shout when they get upset. I don't get it. It's not really an effort for anyone to just be a bit more open minded and respectful...
I always thought it was apocryphal, but now you've got me wondering... is it true that the Finnish word for boyfriend/girlfriend literally translates as "one I don't hate as much as the others"?
Its not going to be feminism if the person concerned doesn't identify as a woman That aside I favour the singular 'They' rather than making up words like Xe , but EOTD whatever makes them happy .... If I care about them I'll probably just use their name , if i'm not close enough to use a name I'll probably not know about their preference and just use He or She That said I encountered an individual the other day who asked us to use the term 'it' because they had rejected their identity as part of the human race.... If it makes 'it' happy ... although I did have to put a square brackets explanation at the top so readers knew I wasn't being disrespectful
Okay, folks, we already have another thread concerning the words we use to refer to people depending on gender, age, all that stuff. We do not need two running conversations were I need to check the last inspection date on the fire extinguisher.
Just the one ? .... I'm sure we are pushing double digits by now Talking of fire extinguishers - In my last job they used to be checked by weighing them .... when I took over in 2010 I found that my predecessor had been weighing and recording an empty fire extinguisher for 4 years
Oh yeah, this meme... Nah, someone's been trolling. In reality 'mulkvisti' translates to something like 'asswipe'.
That sounds like Danish. For real, the more affectionate words would be: Boyfriend = kulliaivo Girlfriend = vinopillu You’re welcome.
