@Homer Potvin I take it you enjoyed Perdido Street Station? I've actually never read Miéville before, but several Goodreads reviewers mentioned that readers could opt for The Scar as an entry point, should they want to.
Yeah, Perdido is excellent. The Scar is the "sequel" as in it takes place innthe same world, but is still stand alone. Very little ambivalence when it comes to Mieville. All love or all hate most of the time.
My daughter gave me a new copy of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style, now illustrated by Maira Kalman. This is to replace my "old" Stunk & White, which I bought new in 1979 for $1.95. The old one, yellowed and tattered, but which I treasure and will keep, reeks of memories, everything from sitting at my news desk to sitting while waiting to be called for jury duty. I think a lot of my writing style has been subtly and beneficially influenced by it.
I am a huge fan of Strunk and White. I figure if it ain't in Elements of Style, hairs are being split too fine.
Fifty-five inch smart TV, the better to watch Georgia hand Nick Saban the drubbing he so richly deserves.
Found a solid-maple drop-leaf dining table at St. Vinny's, for $15. It's in good shape, but the finish is worn away on top. Understandable -- it's at least 78 years old; the brass label on the underside says it was made by the Paine Furniture Co. of Boston, and the company began using the "Paine Furniture Company" name in 1928, and stopped using the brass labels in 1943. I'm stripping the top and refinishing it; I just love the feel of old, hand-assembled furniture. Don't know if we'll keep it or give it to our daughter, since it would work perfectly in her small apartment.
Repairing and refinishing vintage and antique furniture and woodwork in houses is a significant part of my husband's woodworking business. Restoring beautiful wood looks like a most satisfying endeavor.
You don't know the half of it. He's also a geologist, gardener, lapidary, mechanic, outstanding camp cook, hunter, and has been known to occasionally write a poem a la Ogden Nash. He also built our dry-laid stone retaining wall and keeps our aging appliances running nicely. And he's mine, all mine, bwahahahahahahaha.
Thing is, he thinks he is quite ordinary and regards himself as lacking in many respects. He treats computers with the suspicion most people reserve for large venomous snakes.
I know the kind. I grew up in rural northern Michigan on a dairy farm. Men knew how to be a mechanic, farmer, mason, electrician, plumber and on and on. I don't blame you one bit for jealously guarding him, they are slowly getting more and more rare. "Men" these days would probably starve to death if the internet cut off their access to door dash and uber eats.
A packet of ‘mild cheesy’ flavour Cheetos Stars. Mild is right, as they taste of little more than plain maize/corn. Cheetos for people who don’t like cheese.
A blender. I’ve had a couple of healthy smoothies already... you know, like banana, three scoops of ice-cream and full fat milk.
Sounds great except for the banana. You sure you want to adulterate the perfect concoction like that? Maybe substitute malt powder instead?
You know, if you put 2 scoops of ice cream into a SlimFast shake, you get a darned fine milkshake. Just sayin...
That sounds like one of those flavors that would never get sold in the USA. The trend here seems to be that the manufacturers are trying to see how much capsacin they can add to snack food before the consumer dies from an odd sort of flatulent heart attack.
Just before Xmas I got a 2011 Honda CRV to replace my Forester, which was flooded out during Ida back in Sept. 2021. About 50% more expensive than it would have been a year ago. Believe it or not, my first smart phone arrives today. At this point in my life, I'm mostly getting rid of things, not accumulating them, but a car and a smart phone are requirements these days. It's not hard to eliminate things from my life, however; Ida did a quite thorough job of destroying most of my belongings.
Funny you should say that. I assumed Cheetos were an American product (maybe they are) so I found it curious the packet used the British spelling of ‘flavour’.
Bought a lovely blue planter for my indoor plant which was growing out of its old one. Was very happy to find something large under $10.
