UK English - titles as descriptors of specific persons, to capitalise or not?

Discussion in 'Research' started by alw86, Sep 11, 2020.

I'm having a really hard time finding the answer to this, hoping someone can help! I know that in UK English, it is typical to capitalise a title when referring to a specific known person ('Last night Constable Jones had fish for dinner'; 'Stop complaining, Constable!') but not when speaking generally ('there were four constables in the kitchen'). But what about when the title is being used as a descriptor of a specific known person, e.g. 'Jones, the young C/constable, does not like fish'?

    Many thanks in advance!

I wouldn't capitalise that. In your first example, the title is being used as a component of their name. In your last example, it isn't. It's more akin to something like 'Jones, the red-haired man'.

Capitalise when attached to a name, lower case otherwise.
