    Ulysses Switched to Subscription Model

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Martin Beerbom, Aug 13, 2017.

Ulysses has switched to subscription. https://www.ulyssesapp.com/blog/

Pricing for new users is $/€ 40 per year... I find this rather a lot...

It's less for existing users, at $/€ 30. I doubt I will we paying that.

It is an author software, similar to Scrivener.
Subscriptions usually spell problems & new management.

No new management. is a link to a blog entry where the co-founder and lead development behind it defended the decision as the only way to keep the business sustainable.

Interesting to read some of the comments, some of which are coming from people in similar business situations. One of the talking points, as I said, is that the price point they chose is way to high. There's speculation to drive up revenue for a possible sell-out, but it was never cheap, anyway. It was something around 50 bucks for the Mac/Win version, and 30 for the iOS version (compare to Scrivener...), which was OK to pay for many if it would have stayed a one-time pay.

Just to answer that, it's a markdown text-editor combined with an organized file library that syncs automatically across devices. It was particular interesting for online publishers (like bloggers), but ostensibly there also were some book authors among its users. If you know Scrivener, it appeared a bit like a Scrivener cut down to basics with a very simple, clean interface.
