It was a clickbait thing on celebrities who served in the military, I’ll see if I can find it again. It said she served from 16 to 20 years old, and got out after she was wounded in an artillery attack on a barracks. Here’s one mention of it... https://www.warhistoryonline.com/history/dr-ruth-americas-sex-therapist-israeli-trained-sniper.html
Makes more sense... Israeli military service. She was born in 1928 and her entire family was killed in the Holocaust, so I had a hard time picturing a 12 year old Jewish sniper.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_use_of_children_in_World_War_II There were a few. And honestly, maybe she had a spotter help her aim and shoot Nazis?
Sure. Berlin was essentially defended by the Hitler Youth in the end. And the Russians used everyone who could hold a gun (and some who couldn't). Dr. Ruth, however, left Germany shortly after Kristallnacht (1938), I think, which would have made her about 10.
^ Right. If she were born in 1928, that would make her 11 at the start of the war and 15 at the end of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Westheimer OK, so she spent World War II in an orphanage in Switzerland. The only military combat she saw was the Palestine War of 1947-49, putting her age range from 19-21. So TL;DR - she didn't fight World War II, she fought in the Palestine War. The article claiming she was a child sniper shooting Nazis in the head is BS.
And it was known that Soviet children fought in the war. "Soviet Union[edit] A number of child soldiers served in the Soviet Union's armed forces during World War II. In some cases, orphans also unofficially joined the Soviet Red Army. Such children were affectionately known as "son of the regiment" (Russian: сын полка) and sometimes willingly performed military missions such as reconnaissance. Officially, the age of military conscription was lowered to 18 for those without secondary education and 19 for those who had been educated beyond that.[31] In 1943 and 1944 16-17 years old teenagers (born 1926-7), many of Middle Asia, were drafted. These soldiers served in secondary units, not combat. Many were sent to the Far East, to replace units sent to the German front. After training and coming of age, the youth were sent too.[32]" Japan had planned for this to happen in case the Allied decided to launch an invasion of the country. Of course, the whole atomic bomb thing put a stop to that.
I miss ‘reference books.’ In the old days an entire wall of the office would be crammed with reference books. The larger the firm, the wider the range of obscurity. People might even telephone you for your books. [known, widely-aware in the public concsieno-diaspora as a source] Well they did. ‘Yes, correct sir. I have researched all morning and Mcqphuarqueson was indeed an evolution of the rather more obscure StjohnMcqphuarqueson. No, no, no charge. Good day to you, all the best.’
My issue is with McDonald's kiosk receipts. They genuinely are the length of my inner arm. 9 inches of paper for one burger meal.
...'convenience,' unless a national difference. The convenience store is convenient. 'Convenient store' would be the line of your learned Swedish character as you mock him...to death.
I realized my mistake as soon as I posted it. I edited it so quickly though that the forum doesn't even know I edited it. Muahahaha!
Headquartered right here in Rhode Island. I used to host all their executives at the restaurant. Next time I see them I'll relay all your complaints about the length of their receipts.
only by the germans right near the end when they hardly had anything left... platoons of hitler youth were armed with panzerfausts and sent against approaching russian armor
