I doubt he was really serious about extending the war... that's the sort of throwaway sarcasm which gets taken out of context

There are a lot of badass people out there in war time - but few are completely perfect in every way like marty stu. Guy Gibson VC, DFC and Bar, for example (who lead the formation of 617 squadron and the dambusters raid) is also said to have been a womaniser who was regularly unfaithful to his wife and cuckolded his fellow officers

John Keneally VC, DSO was the son of a prostitute, who deserted his original regiment, engaged in a fair bit of crime then took a false identity and joined the fighting irish to avoid getting arrested.

    and so on

According to a Facebook post by my local PD, the current street value of an undisclosed kind of heroin is around $500 per gram.

I would honestly love to know where they get their figures for these things. A couple of years ago the cops did a bust near my home town and reported officially that they had seized so many kilos of drugs with a street value of so many dollars, but when we did the math, it worked out to about ten times what people were actually buying the same drugs for on the street. Last time I was in the know about such things, (about a year ago) heroin where I'm at was around 150$ a gram, cocaine and crystal meth were both about 100$ per gram, and weed was about 10-15$ per gram. Most people up here prefer to abuse prescription meds, though. We actually have a big problem with people dying from smoking Fentanyl patches. Doesn't quite make sense to me.

The distance between a planck second and one second is longer than one second than to the age of the universe.

Let me double-check my math. They said:

$2,400,000 divided by 10.78 pounds = $222,634.51 (rounded to the nearest cent)

$222,634.51 divided by 16 ounces in 1 pound = $13,914.66 (rounded to the nearest cent)

    1 ounce = 28.3495 grams

$13,914.66 divided by 28.3495 grams = $490.83 (rounded to the nearest cent)

Maybe I did my math wrong, but I don't think so. In any case, they didn't say whether the heroin was cut with something, though I know jack-all about such things. I've never exactly been "in the know" with that kind of thing. According to CSPD, the heroin is $490.83 per gram, and the methamphetamine is about $362.17 per gram. It's interesting they mention heroin twice in the statement; that seems to indicate two different kinds.

I've no idea how they calculate the street value. I don't imagine there's an S&P index for black market products. I personally wouldn't know the difference between heroin and powdered sugar.

The thing is that if its uncut heroin one gram of uncut (that is mixed with milk sugar , baby laxative or whatever) Heroin equates to about ten grams on the street... so the street price from your calculations would be $49/gram

I've no idea how realistic that price is

The Voynich Manuscript has been decoded, and it's a women's health guide. The "indecipherable cipher" was just medical abbreviations that everybody at the time was expected to already be familiar with :p

This is just so depressing. Not that it's a women's health book, but that a little of the mystery just went out of the world.

I'm with both of you: I love discovering new things, solving mysteries, and so on, but at the same time--especially with things like the Voynich Manuscript--I feel a sense of loss.

I feel somewhat the same. I am hopeful, though, that people might stop using it as evidence supporting ancient aliens/flat earth theories. If you really need a similar mystery, I've got binders of handwritten notes from school that need deciphering.

So it turns out that professional scholars of medievalism don't consider the new "solution" to hold water.

Damn, only got 151 words down today in my story. Guess that's OK, right? Better than a solid zero words.
