    Walking on snails.

Discussion in 'Revision and Editing' started by Gamecat, Sep 15, 2008.

I live in England and if you've had a few to drink and walk down an alley way at night you can't help but put your blundering feet down on a few snails. It's not pleasant the way their fragile shells go crunch as your blind foot steps squidge them.

Sometimes that's how I feel on writing forums. I try to "tell it like it is" without pandering to fragile egos but have noticed that this site is very careful about offending people. Quite right too. I don't want to put someone off who has only just started walking the long road. But I also appretiate honesty in a critique.

So I was thinking that those of us who don't mind an honestly harsh critique could add a little something to their signature that lets everyone else know that they can handle it.

I was thinking a cut and paste job of the below code would do it.

    Bring it on

Anyone else think this might be a good idea?

    Hi Gamecat,

    I absolutely agree with you.

Sometimes, if not all, you need a bit of that rough-on-the-edge talk... and that's how life is. And if someone is really thinking of going into the writing business, then he/she won't be welcomed everywhere with a smile.

    Thank you :)

    P.S: 'appreciate' is with a 'c' not a 't' ... lol :p tc

    Yes! :D

Edit to add: this post wasn't supposed to spam so much as show that I added the suggested tag to my sig, which doesn't show.

I also agree. I'd rather people shot me down before I thought I was a genius. Besides, being rejected by an anonymous person on the board is so much better than being formally rejected by a publisher. Not that I've experienced that yet...

I'm adding it to my sig more for fun than any serious belief in it as a useful tool.

Okay, a little more comfort then maybe the both of us wanted. Anyway I haven't been on this site for long, but it sounds like a wonderful idea. I rather people tell me the harsh truth then for me to get a swelled head. We all need a healthy dose of negative and positive. I believe I will take your idea and also put those lovely red words in my signature. Let me go do that.

The amount of times this has happened to me, it makes me stop mid sentence directly as I hear the crunch...

Well, first off, I completely agree! Why? I'm extremely anti-politically-correct!
However, I do appreciate directness, and I'd rather get the truth plain and simple than have the truth hidden behind a bunch of fluff, or, be lied to. After all, constructive criticism is great, but it doesn't always work when getting one to progress in their writing...

BUT! To truly join this conversation...
Lucieo, thats some good thinkin'. I've sent my stuff to many publishers, and, in most cases, never gotten a reply... My self confidence hung itself right then and there.

I don't believe anyone should ever have to hold back from critiquing things like this, as long as they are not being disrespectful to the creators directly or insulting them themselves.
