Anybody ever been a election day poll worker? Man what an exhausting day, I knew there must have been a reason I went to college....:/
I'm such a moron sometimes. I've spent all day waiting for a phone/call email without any joy. Then I check my email, and there are 7 emails in my junk folder. Ugh. On the bright side, induction tomorrow, followed by drinks in London. Internships rule!
Ah, the jealousy! I've always felt this fascination for London, and once I'm done with high school (more specifically, the following Summer) I might even go work for a semester there. Not that I would know about internships, though. I've always had a lack of interest when it comes to school, and it reflects on my grades.
My induction is going fantastically. I've already put one story on the site, and am learning how to use all sorts of cool things!
I thought it was about politics not mucking about with gadgetry In fairness, it's all better than me working out what words have spicy hidden swearwords in them for dinner conversation tonight. So I'm going to be talking about Scunthorpe a lot.
Possibly one of the most interesting place names in the English language Spent the day chasing people. The best part of three hours has been spent on the phone. I still have one more call to make, but seeing as he's probably out of the office now it'll wait until the morning. And after that, I have two graduate posts to apply for. But tonight: football. After deciding not to play last week, I really want to hit a hat-trick just to announce I'm starting the season at my best.
^Looks like tonight is a good night for sports--I have my first "bout" tonight. Our crowd is just going to be made up of veteran members of the league, but still...serious business. I found out last week that Honey Badger was registered by another skater, and I was planning on still using it and just not being registered, but then I was joking around with Joel yesterday and came up with the perfect name...Dewey Decks'emall. Now I kind of want to change it...
I need a nickname for when I play. Though for a while I got the 'Der der der der' chant treatment from Mirfield Panthers followers when I played for them 45 minutes before I go. Toying with wearing the shirt I got from Gary Roberts on Saturday, just so I can say I've played in an actual Huddersfield Town shirt. Also, two down, four to go. Good three to come. Average two behind me. Half-decent one next.
If you think about it, math's not that hard. It's just overly difficult, monotonously complex, easily blundered and... Geez, I hate math as well.
Maybe it's just the people I've met, but it seems like the people who like English-related classes generally don't like math, and people who like math generally don't like English. I wonder why that is? It helps to ask your teachers if you're struggling, though - pester them if you have to. After all, even if they are bitter, spiteful people, their job is to help you
Because they don't recognize that math is a language, and that it's power lies in understanding its syntax and transformation rules. Besides, math is the key to the physical sciences, which play a huge role in science fiction. The way math is taught in schools these days is interminably tedious and repetitious. It's no wonder so many students hate it. But it can also be exciting and challenging and full of hidden treasures waiting to be revealed. Consider the beauty of the Mandelbrodt set, which arises from repeated simple calculations in the complex number plane.
The sides of the brain are catered to one each, which is also a factor. The creative side of the brain is more in-tune with Languages and writing, and the logistical side more in-tune with Mathematical things. That's a very dumbed down statement, buts it's proven by many more intelligent people than me and i'm not in the mood to write paragraphs explaining it! Haha
When I read this post, I hear my granddad talking. I have a respect for math, now. I won't take Calculus, having just passed pre-Cal, but I do like math. But yeah, I can see why so many hate it. I didn't like it before because it was all abstract. Give me a formula, numbers, teach me how it works and I can solve it easily. Concrete math is what I'm good at.
I'm with Link on this one. And regarding what suddenly BANSHEES and Alex W said, I can see why most of the members of these forums hate math. Although hate is too strong a word. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you finish a difficult equation or problem successfully, whether you're a literate or a physicist.
That's so poetic! It makes me feel a little bad that I totally suck at math. I just got back from the Fabutante Brawl, which is a bout for all the new girls in our league who haven't bouted yet. SO. MUCH. FUN. My team got our asses kicked, but it was the most fun I've ever had. And I did really well--I doubt anyone will understand the significance of this, but I got lead jammer every time I jammed, which never happens. Such an awesome night.
I can see the beauty of math, I guess -- the possibilities in the numbers -- but words have always held the true meaning for me, so I've always loved English.
Does it make me unusual if I'm perfectly happy with either? I went down the writing lots academic route, but I still feel very comfortable dealing with numbers, whether it's balancing my bank account or doing some reading around physics.
Yes, Dante, it does. I'm good with basic math, but as soon as you start getting into things like functions and sin and cosine and what have you, I give up. I was actually really good at math in high school, but I guess I forgot it all after that...
