Congrats to Ms. Munro for winning the Nobel! I've said in another thread that I think she's the best living short story writer, so it was a well-deserved win. I think most people are happy with the selection. She's also the first Canadian to ever win and only the 13th woman.
It's cold. It's rainy. I have work to do and I can't concentrate, which is why I'm coming to hang out in the tavern.
Congratulations to Alice Munro! The Nobel has finally gone to a Canadian (if you don't count Saul Bellow), and it's fitting that Canada's first winner is a woman (though I would have thought it would be Margaret Atwood).
This is my first time here and I'm wondering what is the purpose? Just come and talk shit that matters to no one? If so cool - I though the Wayfarer's Tavern was an RPG looks like you kept this place secret on purpose...
No, no secrets. It just fell out of use... Don't know why. It used to be the #1 used thread in the whole forum.
Charlie Hunnam has decided to drop out of the 50 Shades of Grey movie. He cited his busy television schedule as the reason, but many say the criticism he received when his casting first came out was the cause.
Does anyone else laugh when watching the new Arby's commercial and Bo Diedle says Arby's smokes their meat for 13 hours and the BBQ cook says that not even he smokes his meat that long? I'm childish, I know.
Nope. It's just you... But my son and I werd both doubled over laughing at a commercial in which the woman of the house loudly declares, "No balls in the house!" The father and the sons meekly accept the rebuke, of course. I don't remember what the product was, so the commercial was a failure.
It's been more than a year since I've been on this site, and maybe two since I've posted any writing, but I think it's about time I get back into it and editing again. My name's Steve, and I'm pretty excited about incorporating my new life experiences into some nonfiction and poetry. Since I left this site, I've joined the United States Marine Corps, and have had a wild ride of a life so far with it. I look forward to meeting some of you guys and maybe seeing a few old faces. Sorry if my writing tends to be a little more military based and a hard to understand at time with the copious amounts of jargon that I don't even really notice I say anymore, I just need to get some of my life out on paper. Hopefully I can improve my writing with the help of you guys as well here. E F Mingo
Busy. Pretty much describes it. Traveling from base to base, learning a lot. Haven't had much of a break since before I left home.
To be honest I had the same thoughts... I shied away from this place because I Had no idea what it was and never bothered to look into it... (silly me). Even now, I question whether I have ever had anything worth saying here. There seems to be a thread for just about everything. I guess I could say, isn't it funny how time changes your view of almost everything... It's a crazy feeling to realize how much one was unaware of for most of one's life. Whoever said adult life would be fun forgot to mention that one has to go through a total paradigm shift first.
It's a place for light conversation, and for members to get to know one another. It used to be where people would bring up something that wasn't worth creating a separate thread for, to have fewer noise threads. Of late, people have fewer qualms about flooding the lounge with bird-seed threads. I'm not sure how anyone could be accused of hiding a stickied thread in the most active forum on the site. And Hi Steve! Welcome back.
I'm thinking of trying alcohol. I bought some shot glasses. 33 years old and never drank before. Advice?
Slow and steady wins the race. Maybe start with beer or a hard cider. Hard liquor takes up very little space and packs a serious whallop. Beer or cider has a natural limiting factor in simple bulk of liquid.
A couple of beers here and there is a good way to start drinking. Figure out what you enjoy and get used to how beer tastes. Otherwise you can always just say f it and drink bourbon like I do.
If you're gonna try beer, probably start with Budweiser or Newcastle. Try to stay away from the cheap stuff like Keystone, follow the quality over quantity rule. Make sure you have something filling to eat before you go out drinking with your buddies. Remember the rhyme: "Liquor before beer, you're in the clear. Beer before liquor, never sicker" And uh, have fun!
