@erebh Nope. Sorry. I'm totally willing to kill brain cells with alcohol on occasion, but I draw the line at energy drinks. @Wreybies That's some funny shit. @Lewdog wow. lol.
I'm not old enough to have been around at the time, but I was doing some research for my novel, and found that the first trans-Atlantic telephone cable wasn't laid until the 1950's. Is this true? Was everything done by mail before that? It said that in the mid 1850's they laid a telegraph wire but it was short lived.
@Lewdog I really have no idea. It's a bit before my time too, lol. If so, it's an interesting fact for sure.
Well I remember having watched a television show where it said that the telegraph cable would keep getting dredged up by ships. I have no idea how they keep that from happening now.
Ok it went into service in 1927, so that would be too late for me. Could they do telegraph before that over the radio? http://www.corp.att.com/attlabs/reputation/timeline/27atlan.html
Can't see why not. It's done today. When I was in the service I had cause to scan radio frequencies for signals and down at the lower end of the spectrum you would find a ton of diddy-bops (what we called Morse Code ops).
I'm trying to figure how in my novel I am going to have the Chicago Police send a message to the Police in England. I wonder if the best way will be by letter, or by radio Morse code.
During prohibition in the mid 1920's. Prohibition in the U.S. was 1920-1933, so technically I could make it in the late 1920's so that they could have access to a telephone, but even then who knows who actually had access?
Here is a mermaid show where they use air hoses to stay under water erebh. I believe this place is in Florida where they do the show.
N0t even a few Jaeger-bombs with me and Sally? When I first went to Jersey (A small island off France) to live, Vodka and Red Bull was banned. You could buy a shot of vodka and then return to the bar for a Red Bull but if they caught you mixing it you'd be banned from the bar. If the bartender was caught serving such a lethal cocktail he'd be sacked and the bar owner could have his licence revoked. They also banned dancing on Sundays (even in nightclubs) along with VHS rental and also singing - this was 1988!
First transatlantic telephone call was in January 1927 from London to New York! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_telephone
@Lewdog Marconi was sending wireless telegraph messages across the Atlantic as early as 1901, so there would have been both cable and wireless transmissions available in the 1920s, I guess. Looks like more Google on your horizon!
It used to be stickied here in the Lounge, but it isn't any more. It was an experiment I started quite a while ago, but I think it was a failure. Perhaps someone else thought so too.
The someone else in question was, ironically, moi. All that ever got posted in there was, "Yo speako uno pokito de EspaƱol," so.... yeah.
Gracias. As long as I'm here, can I rub out an annoying silent street performer? A mime is a terrible thing not to waste.
My new cat, Charlie, is a thief. I've had a few cats, but never one who grabbed things and drug them away with that "This is mine" look on their face. I had a ferret a long time ago. He was a serious thief, but that's to be expected with ferrets. Just never thought of cats as pinchers and purloiners.
My mom had two cats back when I was a kid and has two cats now, so I'm definitely more of a cat person than a dog person. Cats can be devious for sure, but they're just so damn fun to have around that the trouble is worth it. As an added bonus, they keep the house free of spiders.
