I'm sure I've read something by him for some uni course...

In other news, I'm getting tired with some of the stuff I get on my FB feed from women turning their interest in martial arts and guns into a feminist statement. Why does everything has to have a political agenda? Ok, it's nice that little girls have concrete heroines to look up to, who talk on the social media about how girls can do this or that too as if we were so dumb we need to be told that, constantly. I've always, for some reason, appreciated e.g. those female marines more who've made it to a particularly demanding unit and still don't want their faces to be toted all over feminist media as yet another examples of We Can Do It. Maybe it's also got something to do with the whole Otherness thing. I don't like being Othered.

You very well may have done. He's required reading, pretty much, for undergraduates here.

And as a white, middle class, male I'm not allowed to have an opinion on anything anyone else does. It's against the law I've heard, but if I was in some hypothetical universe allowed to say something, I'd say men don't really take much notice of what most people do in going shooting or kick-boxing or whatever. Frankly, some of either have partners (men or women) and don't want to mess it up because we are scared of being alone, or frankly are not even that interested. I know I don't want to 'make it' with every woman I see; men aren't these sexual fascists.

I have some bad news for you. Being a Finn living in Finland, you are absolutely an Other.

I think you've got something clever here but I'm not making sense of it. What am I missing? They're scared they'll mess things up with their partners by doing what???

Anything. Sometimes the other person can take your natural checking someone else out and make it a serious problem in the relationship. If you've not found that then obviously I'm dating jerks. :3

I didn't mean women do that stuff to get men, if that's what you assumed, or...? I just feel strange aversion towards mixing what you do with a political agenda. But then again, I'm pretty tired of non-academic/pseudo-academic internet feminism in general. :sleepy:

How am I an Other if I'm a Finn living in Finland? I feel pretty non-other here. Wouldn't I be an Other as, say, a Finn living in California -- what with the funny accent and unnatural sallowness no person living in a sunny place should have.

You're dating modern (western[England counts as western to me, am I wrong?]) women. Try South American maybe or Eastern European for sure. They're not insecure.

Don't get me started on "natural checking someone else out." That is a god given right and every time you don't do it(it's just an instinct), you're denying your natural inner self.

No, no, I meant basically that 'feminists' can be pretty nasty and act like men are not allowed to have opinions on anything. I don't appreciate being judged by what chromosome I was born with. Really, I find academic feminism can sometimes be boring, like Judith Butler - ok, we get it, gender is a social construct, do you have anything else to say?

I'll take your advice! And yes, I must admit I tend to be quite hedonistic - checking someone out who I find attractive is just something I do. I don't mean anything by it - and that applies to both gender. I'm like The Todd from Scrubs. :p

Since everyone is being so anti feminist, lately, and I'm usually anti feminist, I'm going to say one thing that does bother me is how in all the biggest movies (take Interstellar and Edge of Tomorrow from 2014, for instance), the biggest hero is STILL male, up to this very second. This isn't a really big problem, and it's definitely a first world problem, but it is kind of sad.

However, I have been told it's impolite to stare at a stranger's plate in a restaurant.

I do think there are ways to get food from other people though (I am very serious). You need to get a big dog and study it. Watch how it behaves when he sucks around for scraps. Once you start subconsciously imitating him, people are going to be throwing food at you.

I tried that once, took the wrong lessons and sat on a strangers lap then dribbled on their face. Then said 'food?' and smiled.

For some reason that didn't work. It worked for the dog!

As a viewer, I don't mind. But it can be a problem to female actresses in Hollywood 'cause such roles aren't readily available to them, and that must also annoy people who want to see women in such lead roles. The last thing I want is directors (or writers for that matter) to feel guilty about using a male lead because of the political climate.

And I'm anti-irrational and anti-delusional, be they feminists or whatever.

I feel like I missed something here.

My input on the feminism thing: I think a lot of people in general have taken the extreme 'we hate men' form of feminism to mean that's what the whole movement is about. From what I've noticed, the movement is simply for gender equality on both sides, regardless of the sex parts.

But it's too early in the morning and I need my coffee.

    *throws Lemex a chew toy*

And Lemex is acting like a dog now. I must've been gone for a while. :p

    Happy with that. :D

It's my birthday this Sunday, and my sister has already told me what I'm getting from her. The Iliad, in the Everyman Library hardback - to go with my copy of The Odyssey in the same Everyman Library hardback, the Ted Hughes translation of The Oresteia, and Wagner's Ring cycle on DVD. I'm one happy boy. ^.^

Look, some of us have lived with a certain demographic our whole lives(and it is a very specific demographic ). From since I could understand words up untill now, I have been near constantly reprimanded and corrected by only this specific demographic of people. This is my own personal experience and no one should be offended by this. When I see certain types of complaints online, "check your privilege," "understand you don't know what you're talking about" I'm transported back to my own personal experiences and relive the migraine.
