Agreed. I was merely asking, because a LOT of my work is Ancient Greek mythology. I will ask after we get on the lifeboats. I know the mods will figure out all the rules. I trust them. Also, a segment that may need to be revised is 'Fanfiction'. Because it's another strange gray area that's very popular.
OMFG. Thank you!! @Louanne Learning, I totally get wanting the next post and I will also work on that. Do you want to make a temp-PM thread with PS and I on .com for now? I don't want to make a whole thread over there, but since it's the 3 of us, I am happy to reply to it. Then, we can post the PM writing on the new forum.
Over my dead body that thing was nothing but trouble from the day daniel insisted on starting it to the day we shut it down. The new site like this one will be a writers site...if anyone wants to debate politics go to a politics forum
Detail like that is going to have to be worked out, but by and large the spirit of the rules won't be much different because it will still be the same team running things... its hard for me to imagine why we'd have a rule about mythological relationships, except in so far as the 'no bestiality however its dressed up, no necrophilia, no rape etc... bearing in mind that some mythological characters do all three
Love it. Let's do it. It's a clean slate. We have no way of knowing anyway. Like Moose said, actions will be actions and dingdongs will be banned. I guess if Pinky McFiddle shows up and announces who he is we might reconsider, but as far as I'm concerned, clean slates all around. Not there yet. You're so Canadian, Louanne. But I still love you. Not sure what free speech has to do with mythology. Again, not there yet. Not a chance. And no politics or religion whatsoever. No agendas. No social experiments. This is the one space on the Internet forbidden to devolve into that crap. Exactly. However these are broad based questions that need some addressing, even if the details haven't been realized.
I missed the quote somewhere upthread, but I think @Gravy mentioned something about the updating the Fanfiction forum, to which, I would say there is no fan fiction forum to update. To be clear, we are not going to recreate .org in its entirety. There will be the broad based sections, like the Workshop, Progress Journals, Contests, writing discussion, etc. But we will not be rebuilding the node structure verbatim. The tangled web of forums and categories was largely created to accomodate nearly 20 years of data. We're not going to have that problem with a virgin field of snow. And folks, please take the role playing stuff over to discussion thread. This one is getting clogged and our Pacific friends should be waking up and logging in soon.
Within reason, there are a few people who were so destructive they won't be welcome (assuming of course they identify themselves). If someone like Joe Sixpak shows up i'm shooting on sight
Haha. I forgot about him. "Turn on text to speech and it will sound like we're having a conversation." He's probably evolved with help of AI since then.
Here is yet another question that I just thought off... Do we have an estimate for when the new forum will be up and running? I know estimating that is probably hard, but maybe an idea?
Stuff like that evolves as forums grow, when you start fresh you don't need many subfora...a few years down the road if we had a big influx of fan fiction threads it might be something we'd look at. XF is very modular and easy to add to (when its working properly rather than not supported since 2016).
With plenty of time to spare before May 29th. Can't tell you how long. We're working remotely across continents with full time jobs, but it will get done.
WOW! Honestly it was starting to feel like this day was coming. A shame, really. But yeah, we can't expect our great mods to continue playing these ridiculous games with the site owner. Enough is enough. Happy we've got a few weeks notice here to save what we want. I'd already taken a copy of most of my progress journal as I didn't want to lose all the neat stats and stuff. I guess my rejection thread posts are preserved by my Duotrope tracker. I'll have to think about what else I might want to save. I'm also wondering if we might be granted permission to delete some stuff. If I have no idea how the data might be handled in future, I'd prefer to remove my contest stories and workshop posts. Will that be a possibility? Thanks again for all that you guys do. I don't really have any skills, but if you think I can help in some way, let me know.
Greetings from the Pacific! Wow - that certainly is a lot to take in. Homer and Moose, thank you very much for informing us about what's going on. Thank you, also, for everything you've done to keep the forum online. I've enjoyed this forum in the short time I've been here and I'm happy you're working on a replacement. It's too bad about Daniel, but I'd rather not comment further since I don't know him. I've already looked at https://writingforum.org/ and bookmarked it for the future. (There isn't much there yet, which isn't surprising). Thank you so much again for letting us know. Please don't worry too much, I doubt anyone will bang on a table or yell. We'll be ready when you are. Thanks again!
As Moose and Homer know, I left the mod team not because of burnout (although that was an issue for all of us in the "three/four newbie mods") days but because I was worried that Daniel might be starting some sort of wire fraud when he issued an emergency beg for money to the membership without consulting or notifying the mod team at all, then disappeared for two weeks while the donations rolled in. I'm happy to see that decisive action is happening. It's amazed me that you guys have kept things going as long as you have. The yen sucks right now, so I'm poor, but if there are any task-based things I could help out with, let me know. Got a lot of time on my hands this semester.
Iain and Rath are right on time. I figured there'd be a window after the UK went sleep and the Pacific woke up so I stepped away for awhile. I calculate Pacific time by adding two hours and flipping the sun. It might only be one hour. So it's almost the same time here as it is there but the sun is upside down. And it's tomorrow for them. I love that about this place. A bunch of dingdongs all over the world who probably just as nuts as me. We've kicked the idea of starting a new forum around for awhile. Not because we wanted to, but it because we knew we were in trouble and it was one of three options. Option #2 was acquiring the forum from Daniel. Option #3 was do nothing. With two and three out, new forum was the only thing left. I would have thought it unlikely six months ago, but it doesn't appear to be too crazy. I mean, it's complicated but it's not hard, if that makes sense. It's gotten me fired up. It sucks to lose the database and the SEO, but if you think about it, all of that has just gotten us to where we are today. We've never even tried to market the forum or reach new writers through social media. We've never had mailing lists. We haven't been able to use even the preschool level of forum functionality due to absent ownership. None of those things are rocket science. Not even steam engine.
I'm not going to stop you. I'd prefer the place not be trashed, but you got to do what you got to do.
I say you and the team drop tools on the 29th and see what happens, but I'm what my buddy calls a chaos goblin, so... yeah.
