I kind of liked the blog function, but I used it in lieu of the yet-to-be invented Writers' Showcase. Just noodled out half-formed thoughts and posted stories I didn't want to waste crit points on. My 2yen
A long time ago Daniel looked at a curated magazine but it never happened because a usual there was no follow through likewise with anthologies and hall of fame contests and all that… all things we could discuss down the road if there was an appetite however priority one is to get the basics set up first.
and the way you and Ian used it was, but others used it as a way of evading the rules or trying to start or continue arguments, or just posting spam I’m not saying we won’t have a blog function but my take on it is that it should be for people to post writing not “ hey look at this thing I cooked, look I saw a puppy, this is my opinion about xyz BS”
Wow. Focus on work & family for a couple months (err, years) and then come back to this..... Crazy. I do have a question - which may have already been answered - is it possible for all of the content in here to be moved to a new server, especially the research, questions, and people's posted work? I'm sure others have their preferences as well. Thanks in advance!
The new software has a lot of options for restricting areas and the rep points people can accumulate, similar to .com. It's not difficult to have blogs or other things tied to points that can only be earned by participating in the writing areas, like the Workshop. Ergo, only people who participate in the writing areas get the perks. Many, many, options.
Sadly, it seems not. They can't download the database and there would be potential legal issues with it as well.
Shoot. All right, thank you! I guess we'll see some of the same questions arise over time and then we'll build up a database that people can search...
Despite the disruption this will cause, thank you for the bracing dose of reality. Isn't that what we want for our characters, to throw things at them and see how they weather it? It's our turn, for real. I'm prepping for a big writers' conference this coming Thursday through Sunday and I don't dare get immersed in this thread at the moment. When I do, I hope to find someone has outlined the most efficient way to back up anything each member would like to save. I'm sure I could figure it out on my own, eventually, but why reinvent the wheel? That's going on the understanding that after the 29th, the WritingForums dot org URL will get us a 404 Page Not Found error. Or will it be archived somewhere? I'll check back on the 20th.
So on So we can copy and repost? Like our progress journals, for instance? (Not that mine is that useful. Just asking. For a friend. Yeah.) EDIT--As a Community Volunteer, how can I make myself useful? It'll have to wait till the 20th, but I can get in there and try.
The likelihood is that if Daniel doesn’t pay the server bill you will get page not found. The host will save it for a while but if it’s continually not paid eventually they’ll delete it
not much to do on this end. We may have various mini mods or volunteers etc on the new place in due course but that is again a discussion for later
Can we have a Member Writing Challenges forum - something like they have on WF.com https://www.writingforums.com/forums/member-writing-challenges.60/
another to be determined there’s lots we could do but we aren’t going to do it all straight away as a forum needs to grow organically you don’t start a new forum with lots of empty boards. You start with a few and expand them as the momentum builds
Include me in anything you guys do. I'm no coder but I love this place and there's people here i really look up to.
I've added the signature in my profile as well. But I made it red and bold so its attention grabbing.
So, a day or two before we get to board the new board? Going to be interesting to see how it looks and behaves. I have a question related to security, if the team can answer it. What happens to our e-mails and passwords that are attached to this old forum once it goes down? What I'm asking is basically if they will be secured until the site's likely demise? Looking forward to boarding the new ship. This rescue boat we're on is leaking, and I think one member ate another due to hunger kicking in.
They already answered this one, I think. Everything is in the database, which will continue to exist until the current host gets tired of non-payments and deletes it. The real question is whether Daniel has any off-site backups that are up to date. Here is another question though. The domain will continue to belong to Daniel until it expires in about a year from now. If the domain expires and Daniel doesn't renew it, does the team here have any plans to buy it and run the new forum under the old writingforums.org name? I don't think that's illegal. In fact, if they don't do it, someone else probably will.
In ref of the database there's nothing i can do ... i don't have hard delete powers and can't assign them to myself... emails isn't really an issue because your email address is allover the place anyway... I'd suggest that if you use the same password for anything important you might want to change it at those other places (changing the password here wouldn't achieve anything since the old ones are retained) the domain registration renews each march - if daniel doesn't renew it we might look at acquiring it and mapping it to the new forum so that either url works but hopefully by then the new place will be gaining its own momentum
We used to have writing prompts which was similar but full to the gills with BS and people avoiding workshop criteria- that's the subforum of the lounge currently called word games
One of the discussions we have had - apart from anything else we could leap-frog the SEO that the current domain has. The domain name is unlikely to be available for a long time; by the time it is available the new version will hopefully have achieved the same critical mass, so will become a lot less relevant than it is today.
we could short circuit it by getting it directly from daniel, but as with acquiring the forum itself the problem is that its hard to negotiate with someone who doesn't communicate
