What are these type of words called? 'as' 'if' 'and' 'be' 'than' 'it' 'can' 'like' Basically small connecting words like these.. What is the proper phrase for these words?
Most are adverbs, with a couple verbs and a pronoun thrown in. Your first resort should be to look in a dictionary.
I think you are looking for 'conjunction' though they can be other parts of speech depending on the sentence. 'as' - conjunction, sometimes a preposition. 'if' - conjunction (rarely a noun such as "no ifs") 'and' - conjunction 'be' - verb and auxiliary verb 'than' - conjunction, sometimes a preposition. 'it' - pronoun 'can' - verb (provided you don't mean a can of worms) 'like' - can be a verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, noun
Baby words - or Shakespearian perhaps: 'As if, and be than it can like?' 'Twas it, nee tis she! Arise vessel, to Venus we fly.'
only 2 are adverbs, cog... 'as' adv.; conj.; pron.; prep. 'if' conj.; noun 'and' conj.; noun 'be' verb 'than' conj.; prep. 'it' pron.; noun 'can' verb; aux. v.; noun 'like' verb; noun; prep.; adj.; adv.; conj. there is no 'phrase' that covers all of those words... nor is there one word/label... as you can see, they are a variety of parts of speech...
