Since last I posted here... Audio: Finished "From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz. (recommended!) Finished "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris. Finished "Dark Tower VI: Song of Susanna" by Stephen King. Finished "The Body in the Closet" by Mary Higgens Clark. Finished "The Five People you Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Alborn. Finished "Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcolm Gladwell. (very interesting nonfiction) Finished "Divine Justice" by David Baldacci. (recommended thriller-fiction) Currently listening to "The Professor and the Madman" by Simon Winchester Magazine: Still reading the Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine I started, I bounce back to it in between books. Books: Finished "Welcome to Camp Nightmare," a children's book I read to get the feel for children's writing. Finished "Eye of the Dragon" by Stephen King. Started "The Sentinel" by Jeffrey Konvitz. Almost done with "The Purpose-Driven Life" by Rick Warren. Soon to start: Audio: "Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower" by Stephen King. Book: "Ice Station" by Matthew Reilly. Note that any books that I read regarding religion don't necessarily reflect my views, nor do they mean that I'm "searching." I read books about religion to learn the views of others. In the above list, there's one atheist book, one orthodox Christian book, and one inspirational fiction. None of them do I completely agree or disagree with. I march to the beat of my own drummer.
I just finished the three Vampire Academy Books by Richelle Mead. My daughters want to read them and I read everything before them just to make sure there is nothing too explicit about them. I really enjoyed the books. They kept my attention. I am about to start the Mortal Instruments Books by Cassandra Clare. It is another set that my girls want to read.
Currently reading Brisingr, third book from the Immortal Cycle by Christopher Paolini. I just finished another series by Raymond E. Feist. Daughter of the Empire Servant of the Empire Mistress of the Empire I recommend them to anyone that loves strange worlds and political fantasy/fiction
Simultaneous Man - Ralph Blum a random pick from the used book store, not bad and I'm re-reading Batman the Dark Knight.
I know I'm so behind, but I'm about to read The Da Vinci Code. I fail. xD I loved Angels and Demons anyway.
I just finished ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell. It was a short, easy read, and I highly recommend it. It's a sad story, but I liked it. A few observations: It had very little direct dialogue, but that didn't seem to harm the story at all. Also, despite its shortness, the story ran over the course of several seasons. The last few pages took place over several years. The characters were great. The story would not have been nearly as effective if not for the connection you have with the characters. Again, it's impressive how much you felt for them considering how little actual dialogue there was. Even though I'm usually a proponent of happy endings, this one was definitely sad. Not sad like when the main character dies, but sad for the plight of all the characters and of future generations. It leaves you wishing for rebellion. I think that's the point.
my summer reading. I just finished July, July by Tim O'brien and really enjoyed the piece. Found it a lot different that his others, but In the Lake of the Woods remains my favorite of his novels. Currently reading: The Raw shark Texts by steven Hall, to say the least it's keeping me interested. The format is a little hazy, but i'm a little over 100 pages in and still have time to go.
Finished Consider Phlebas, started A Scanner Darkly. I have a distinct feeling that I may find myself being a bit depressed by my reading material over the next couple of days.
Im reading the picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, and i dont want it to end, it is THE best book i have read for a long time. Wilde is the man, when it comes to writing. I have been re-reading whole passages, sentances and chapters for the whole book. He is just genious...
That's a good book. To get my Canadian-content up I'm reading The Darkness that Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker. It is an interesting, religion and philosophy heavy epic fantasy.
Just finished Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and The Glass House by Jeannette Walls. Starting on Talk to the Hand by Lynne Truss and As I lay Dying by Faulkner.
wow, thats some heavy reading... uh, I finished Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere kind of recently and now Im on William Gibson's Neuromancer...its really good so far!
faerie tale - Raymond E Feist. Overlong. Yes. Good. I think so and certainly better than the bog standard, but still highly readable, high fantasy juggernaut that is the Rift War series.
I'm rereading Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces. I try to read it at least once year, it is up there with The Birth of Tragedy as my favourite work of non-fiction. I also have Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves. I've wanted to read it for a while now.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - by Ray Bradbury [love this book] Williow - by Julia Hoban [it's written in third person, present tense and so reads very, very awkward, but I'm intrigued enough by the story that I'm not giving up]
Chomsky I'm reading Interventions by Noam Chomsky. It's op-ed pieces he wrote that weren't published by the New York Times, but picked up internationally.
Flitting between 'Salem's Lot for an easy read, and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley enjoying both of them thoroughly! Don't understand all the seemingly negative remarks about Frankenstein I've come across...
I just finished "The Diary of Anne Frank" yesterday and just started reading Jane Eyre by Charolette Bronte. I think it's good so far but I'm only on page 12 so who can say. I'm usually not a "classics" sort of person so the fact that I'm reading it means it must be at least decent.
Since my last post here... Audio: Finished The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester Finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Finished On the Wealth of Nations by P.J. O’Rourke. Finished The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Tertiary Phase by Douglass Adams. Finished Full Speed by Janet Evanovich & C. Hughes. Finished Night Fall by Nelson Demille. (excellent book!) Finished The Year of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg. Finished Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thorton Wilder. Currently listening to The Tenth Justice by Brad Meltzer. Books: Finished "The Sentinel" by Jeffrey Konvitz. Finished "The Purpose-Driven Life" by Rick Warren. Started "Delusions of Grandma" by Carrie Fisher, which I picked up for my mother but decided to read myself first. Started (and almost finished) "The Masked Rider" by Neal Peart. When finished, I plan to jump right into his next book, "Ghost Rider." I haven't gotten back to my "Ellery Queen Mystery" magazine I was reading, but I'll get to it. I really want to get these books read first.
