I heard a couple stories read on the radio a long time ago and I really enjoyed them, but I never found out the title of them. Maybe you guys can help me. One I think was a short story. It was about a poor guy and girl struggling with money and they both planned to buy the other one a christmas presents with the little money they had. They both ended up buying the same gift for each other without knowing it. What was the title of this story? The other story was read in the first person and I think it was a novel. It was about a black man living in the segragated past. I heard the part where he walked into a shop to buy a radio. The shop was run by a white woman who gave him a hard time by being rude when he asked to look at the radios on the shelf. I think she said something like "Well you can't afford that one." what was the title of this book? I would appreciate any answers, thanks
The first one is a variation on the famous story called The Gift of the Magi. The second, I dunno. But it might be a play called "A Raisin in the Sun" Half your mystery is solved. Who now will find for you the knowledge that you seek?
Could the second one be Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin? He was a white man who made himself up to look like a black man, and travelled the Deep South for six weeks.
I've read Black Like Me, and I don't remember the scene about the radio. The first story has several different versions, I think.
thanks for telling me about the first story, that was definetly it. I thought I would never hear it again but there are a lot of audio readings online of it. I hope that someone can find out what the second story is, it was really good and I wanted to hear more of it. these books are the some of the few that have recindled my love of writing and reading.
