What do you need when writing? A few of my favorite things to have would be: Inspiration Music is an important factor to me Photos of characters or could be characters
For me I need some time when I won't be interrupted or distracted and where I can walk around the room thinking about my characters and my plot without worrying about how it looks. Playing music has never worked for me. Even when I was young I shut off the music when I was trying to study because I find it distracting.
A playlist of songs that have more to the lyrics, or movies/tv shows I have seen many times. Pen, my writing book and a pot of tea. Nothing too fancy.
My laptop. My caligraphy is really awful and my hand gets tired easily so if I want to write a long scene, I do it on the laptop. Now, if I'm away, I just write a little drabble to remember later when the laptop is available.
For me it would be heavy or determined music, something fresh to drink and a big workplace. Including maps of the world, pictures of random people that have similar qualities of characters i have created. A sketchpad for the non-human characters too.
Coffee. A latte' made with a dark espresso roast or Sumatra Extra Bold. It makes litsening to the voices in my head more understandable when I take their dictation into a form of a cohesive story...
No distractions, focus and the tools of the trade. A big pot of coffee doesn't hurt. Sometimes, a glass of good scotch, but only one.
Ahhh, a single malt man. I wish I had your class, I prefer 100% blue agave, which shows our differences. Over the months I've also sought solitude. My characters are becoming important to me, and I'm trying to be very careful with their lives.
Has nothing to do with class. Let's just say I've known a couple people over the years who had a taste for some really fine scotch. I've acquired the taste for it from them. I'm not really a drink by nature. But I do enjoy a really good wine or scotch. When I was much younger, the Hells Angels had a house in Garden Grove Calif. Had a friend that rode with them for a while. They knew how to throw a party. So don't be thinking I'm some dude with a lot of class. Now as far as the topic, there's way to many distractions to be doing any writing during a big party like that.
LOL. That's my problem. "Shiny things" distract me very easily. Right now the wife has the TV blaring, I'm still on my first pot of coffee and the mutts are ripping apart some interloper that walked onto my property. How can I work with that? I'll work tonight, but now I need to talk to a few folks here, get my head into the game, and get some juice going. I'm not there yet.
I need my laptop, a playlist I've created (mostly Blindside), coffee, the internet, photos of how I picture my characters and settings and rain.
My problem is cats. When they want attention they'll come over and tap me on the arm or get up and sit in front of the screen, then stare at me until I pay attention to them.
I need focus. I haven't had that in weeks and haven't made any progress because of it. Maybe I'll just unplug my internet.
I'm having trouble tonight, myself. Natch, I just started Chapter XIII. Maybe it's time to hang out here and just play some Mahjong Titans.
Well, first an idea. Then pen, paper, a computer, an outline is crucial too. Then silence and some time. Google is my friend. I could never have found all the information I have to check as I go along without it.
Musts? My pen and writing journal. Neither of which I can find right now. The walmart here stopped selling the breast cancer pens, and that is the only one so far that I've found to love the way it writes. The need for silence has been drilled out of me so music is good if I can find some that suits what I'm attempting to write. Otherwise the TV's on and people are talking. Then coffee with in reach.
Pen (several colors), a notebook, a laptop with Word on it, peace and quiet (hard to come by, these days), some reference books (dictionaries, desk encyclopedias, and some specialized stuff for each story), and something to sip (usually herbal tea, but sometimes Crown Royal).
