The fact that no one has liked this yet is proof of the Matwoolf conspiracy.

You don't need a like to know that I am in love with you.

IDK. Sometimes it is for the LULZ, and other times for sharing
or receiving some legit advice or whatnot. Just depends. :)

That's precisely why I don't put stock in likes. It has nothing to do with actually liking something. There are people who 'like' they way they breath: constantly, mouth open, huge gaping huffs, without regard for any of the environmental pollutants they are inhaling.

Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, is the world's greatest leader. "LIKE"
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, is the world's greatest leader. "LIKE"
Donald Trump, President of the United States, is the world's greatest leader. "LIKE"
Big Bird, mascot of Sesame Street, is the world's greatest leader. "LIKE"

Liking all those things is contradictory and at least one of them cannot possibly be true.
    (Hint: it's not this one)

    @KhalieLa

I think the majority of people here were talking about "likes" on this website. You seem to be talking about general social media. There is a marked difference between the two, considering the politics that you keep using as an example only stay in the debate room.

    Quote from OP:
So, while I appreciate your diatribe against "likes," I thnk you've missed the point.

Yes, horribly political of me to single out beer drinkers. (But, then, you 'liked' this one.)

The point of using non-writing examples was to show how little the function means without starting an all out writers opinion war in this thread. I could just have easily used:

Always use italics for thoughts. 'LIKE'
Never use italics for thoughts. 'LIKE'

Never use said as a dialogue tag. 'LIKE'
Only use said as a dialogue tag. 'LIKE'

Only use Times New Roman font. 'LIKE'
Only use Courier New font. 'LIKE'
It doesn't matter which damn font you use. 'LIKE'

Expunge all clichés from your story. 'LIKE'
Stop being paranoid about clichés. 'LIKE'

When likes are thrown around willy-nilly it devalues any supposed function they might have served. Does the person agree with the position that you should only use said as a dialogue tag or does the person agree with the position that you should never use said as a dialogue tag. They can't both be right. When a person likes contradictory information, then I am less likely to consider any advice they give.

Lol. I think you're taking the likes on the website a little too seriously.

You're assuming that "likes" mean "agree" and that they have absolutely no other purpose.

    Yup.

I like arguments that are well made and make me think, even if I don't necessarily agree with the conclusion. I like comments that show enthusiasm and joy, even if they aren't really making a point. I like posts that make me laugh.

I like posts of cute kittens. Do I have to agree with cute kittens? No. (although who could argue with their fuzzy wittle faces???)

If the button was "I agree 100% with everything in this post" I would use the button much less. But that's not what the button says.

"Likes" are something most love to have and many love to hate.

I'm an atheist. I don't believe in the divinity of Jesus, or that he died for my sins.

But I celebrate Christmas. I love Christmas. I love the traditions, the singing of carols, the decoration of the tree, the exchange of gifts, the feasts, the gatherings of family and friends. I'd give Christmas a "like" even though I disagree with the Bible. I don't regard this as cognitive dissonance. If someone says I can't celebrate Christmas because I'm an atheist, I laugh in their faces. If they tell me they don't respect my views because I'm an atheist who celebrates Christmas, I shrug and leave them in my rear-view mirror.

There's absolutely nothing hypocritical or contradictory in being an atheist who celebrates Christmas.

It is, as you say, the traditions that you're celebrating. And those traditions far antedate Christ...or were invented by Coca-Cola and the Victorians!

I 'like' people who give me a 'like.' I 'like' everything @Oscar says, but there's simply not enough hours in the day, I like @CaveTroll until he gets a girlfriend, and the alzheimers fellow @123456789 gets a 'like' merely for his ability to find a screen at what I know is a very busy care home

    Likes are like crack.
The better my posts are, the more crack I get, and the more crack I get, the more I post!

    Vicious cycle of ego-stroking xD

Honestly, though, I just feel like the likes are a nice way to see that someone heard you or simply enjoyed what you wrote which makes me feel more part of the community (some of my old old posts still get hits which makes me feel good about what I wrote)

I never 'like' old posts because then people might think I'm stalking their posting history (rather than reading old threads, which I often do).

I'm always startled but pleased (as opposed to creeped out) when someone Likes something I wrote eons ago.

    Fixed it for YOU.

Maybe I will change my policy. But I'm still scarred from that time I was Facebook-stalking my crush and accidentally liked their picture from 2008.

When I give one, it is as Tender said: thanks, good idea, I agree, etc.

When I get one, it means that women want to be with me, and men want to emulate me.

Agreed or thank you for taking the time reading what I wrote and responding or thank you for the new info that inspired me or... simply I like what you just posted for whatever the reason. I try to stay away from the like politics although it always feels nice giving or taking a like. Means you have been noticed or even agreed upon. I think that I'm quite outspoken about my likes. When I like something I like it. When I really like something I also say "thank you". Actually when I signed here the second time I still didn't even have a fb page so I was kind of baffled. When should I use a like? Due time it lost its mystery. :p

What confused me was the "follow" thing. I thought if someone was following me, they'd get notified about every little post I made, and since one of the first people to do so was a mod, well, I figured I was in trouble again.

In a past life, my supervisors had orders to document everything I did or said, in preparation for my eventual termination with cause. I got the last laugh though, by submitting a scathingly unprofessional letter of resignation, and serving out three of my last five days on unpaid suspension.

That job's long enough in the past that it doesn't matter anymore.
