    SCIENCE QUESTION!!!!

If one family has a history of allergies or allergic reactions to things such as like allergic to dairy, gluten, nuts or any of that and then one family doesn't really have a history allergies and such things

Then say two people from that family had children.....

How is something like that divided up in the child or is all just random chance?

    It's complicated.

It's a book review but you can get an idea just how complicated by reading the review.

Just get a large set of earphones and clap them to your head just after you sit down. You don't have to turn them on. In fact, they'll help muffle distractions. And nobody will approach you with stupid questions or demands. :ninja:

I think it boils down to recognising insults and name-calling. Some people have trouble recognising when they've crossed the line.

Of course you've got trolls who are deliberately stirring the shit all the time, but other genuine debaters can get so heated they don't recognise that the language they've started using has become personal and confrontational. Their argument then boils down to silencing opponents, rather than strengthening a point of view. Heat can result in insulting people who are actually in agreement, because the person spewing vitriol is no longer paying attention to what is actually said—which gets strange indeed.

We should all work to recognise that shift from debate to rage in ourselves, and resist the urge to post anything until the 'rage' urge passes.

And don't feed trolls at all. Not you, @Cave Troll - you're a real troll. As in Tolkien/Scandinavian type. You're cool. We'll happily feed you.

Obsessive trolling in particular has damaged this forum. Maybe that's what happened to the lounge.

I've noticed people keep taking jabs at the American presidential candidates in this thread - could we be a little kinder to each other and keep these jibes/mockery/snarky jokes out of the thread? There're plenty of ways to have a bit of fun, and the very occasional jab does happen and that's ok - but it isn't all right to make that a norm. I'm not American and honestly don't care about any of the candidates, but I know some folks on here do, and it's just not very nice to keep making fun of figures that some members of the forum might support/admire/believe in.

If you have to talk about politics, keep it light and neutral. If that's not possible, try other topics :)

Here, enjoy a fun honest trailer! :D

Cats are less social? Well, if so we'd be smothered with attention if we had dogs. This is more than enough:

Both our cats are waiting near the door when we come home. One of them will not eat food unless she has been petted thoroughly. If we are not paying enough attention to her, she gets very vocal in a disturbing way, to get us to join her in the other part of the house, and once we go check out whether she is stuck or hurt, she has this smug look on her face, and demands, "Pet me now!" My older son at times gets his hair groomed by one of the cats. The other likes to sit on my husband's already way too furry computer bag right next to his laptop when he is working from home. Going to the bathroom alone is not an option, as the cats like to watch, and they know how to open the bathroom door. At night I have the choice of a cat lying on my chest or mewing indignantly at the bedroom door. So if dogs are even more social, I don't think I could stand that.

Well, those seem to be very affectionate cats.Reminds me of my dog. But I'm pretty sure they're closer to the exception than the rule.
As I said, there are other things.
I've seen what cats can do. Without getting graphic, it was an injured baby bird and it took hours. Dogs just aren't that cruel. My dog might very occasionally kill a rat because of his Schnauzer ratting instinct but it's quick and relatively painless. (He also then sits around waiting for us to eat it. :blech: ) And they don't kill anywhere near as many random animals. Meanwhile cats are decimating the populations of birds and small furry things in Australia, especially rare mostly defenceless native ones like lorakeets and bilbis and stuff. They are killing way more than they could ever eat.Thank god brushtail possums are surprisingly tough. And pretty sneaky.
Someone please tell me if this pet debate is getting too serious or consuming. I don't want to ruin the thread.

Yeah, cats can get pretty sadistic with their victims. :[ At least dogs go in for the kill. That said, once I had a dog who loved hunting lizards for some weird reason and one day I found a lizard lying on the ground barely alive. Sometimes dogs get on it too. Guess it just goes to show you that even our dear Mr. Fluffy and Fido still have their prehistoric instincts locked in there.

Honestly, it just goes down to the personality of each individual cat and dog. Some are more social than others. If they're hunting, some go in for the quick kill while others will toy with their prey before administering the final bite, or just straight up abandoning them to die.

I think that was just the dog leaving it because it was bored or hesitant. That's not really cruel, is it? Not intentionally. Unless you actually saw any toying going on? Because the example I referenced was well-witnessed and explicitly cruel. The bird was a toy.
