I'll go with an instrumental piece - 'The Only Moment We Were Alone' by Explosions In The Sky. I dislike most 'sad' lyrics. There are rarely any good ones. Most (by far not all of course, but the majority) of them are generic, badly written crap full of self-pity.
Whiskey lullaby- and I don't even like country He put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger He finally drank away his misery Life is short this time it was bigger Than the strength he had to get up of his knees They buried him beneath the willow And the angels sang a whiskey lullaby Also pretty much the whole Paglaicci opera and the ending song on phantom of the opera because Christine is a b**** and she totally should have stayed with the phantom.
Franklin by Paramore: Gets me in tears every time i listen to it. Don't know why. Fruit Tree by Nick Drake You Decide by Fireflight Haile's song by Eminem
Gloomy Sunday is one of my favorites. I'm not the biggest MCR fan, but The Ghost of You is really sad. I do kinda like that one.
I'm not into industrial music anymore, but one song that sticks with me is Assemblage 23's 30k ft. Devastating lyrics.
I don't know about if this is the saddest song I've heard but it is surely in the top ten: I was driving across the burning desert When I spotted six jet planes Leaving six white vapor trails Across the bleak terrain Like the hexagram of the heavens It was the strings of my guitar Amelia, it was just a false alarm The drone of flying engines Is a song so wild and blue It scrambles time and seasons If it gets through to you Then your life becomes a travelogue For the picture post card charms Amelia, it was just a false alarm People will tell you where they've gone They'll tell you where to go But till you get there yourself You never really know Where some have found their paradise Others just come to harm Amelia, it was just a false alarm I wish that he was here tonight It's so hard to obey His sad request of me to kindly stay away So this is how I hide the hurt As the road leads cursed and charmed I tell Amelia, it was just a false alarm The ghost of aviation She was swallowed by the sky Or by the sea Like me she had a dream to fly Like Icarus ascending On beautiful foolish arms Amelia, it was just a false alarm Maybe I've never really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes And looking down on everything I crashed into his arms Amelia, it was just a false alarm I pulled into the cactus tree motel To shower off the dust And I slept on the strange pillows of my wanderlust I dreamed of seven forty sevens Over geometric farms Dreams, Amelia Dreams, and false alarms. .
Hi, So many to choose from: Hallelujah - multiple versions but Jeff Buckley's is the best. Bright Eyes - Can't remember if it's Simon or Garfunkal who wrote it. Who wants to live forever- Queen, but mostly because of the movie Highlander, and where it's played during it. Lady D'Arbanville - Cat Stevens, it feels almost like a dirge for the dead but it's really just about a woman he could never have. Old and Wise - The Alan Parsons Project, I love everything by the duo. Kyrie - Mr. Mister - You think it's upbeat from the music then read the lyrics and realise it's about death. Cheers, Greg.

Oh I LOVE sad music! So many to choose from ^__^ No personal emotional connection, just composed sad music: Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings (classical) Naruto OST1 - Sadness and Sorrow <-duh it's supposed to be sad XD (anime) Mirage of Blaze ending credits (anime) Basically any sad Erhu song. (Chinese classical) Bioshock Infinite - Will the Circle be Unbroken (game) Uncertain memory - Gackt (J-pop)
"You" on RARE BIRD ALERT by Steep Canyon Rangers, featuring Dixie Chicks. I DO NOT like Dixie Chicks (and am not a big fan of bluegrass), but this is the saddest song I've heard, and often have to forward through it.
They're not exactly slow and melodic, but the Gaslight Anthem's Mae would definitely be a top contendor for me, as would the acoustic versions of Great Expectations and The Blues, Mary.
The whole Hospice album dissolves me into a big pile of mush every time. "Epilogue" Epilogue is the one that really gets to me though, especially at about three and a half minutes in.
Hero by Mariah Carey, it reminds me of all the dropped heroes who risked everything on 9/11 and just individuals who are characters in daily lifestyles that have died.
One day I listened to "Exit Music (For A Film)" by Radiohead and got really bummed out, so much so that some of my friends were like, "Nick, what's wrong?"
"You Raise Me Up" by the multitude of people who have done it. It makes me cry because I first heard it when I was in the deepest part of my depression.
These probably aren't the safest songs I've heard, but they do come to mind. Much of Bright Eyes' music strikes me as sad, but in a good way. You'll need to listen to some of it to feel what I mean. I have several that always get to me. Poison and Wine by The Civil Wars http://youtu.be/WfzRlcnq_c0 Take It All Away by Red http://youtu.be/iAHCsyOb3Rc It's Not Fair by I Am Empire http://youtu.be/L7qPGW_LGqo Mad World and Cat's In The Cradle both make me burst into tears. Mad World because it was a favorite song of my friend Noah who died after a long fight with cancer a few years ago. He suffered so much with it and he just wanted it to be over and I really can't blame him for feeling that way. When I was in treatment I wanted to die too except my body wasn't ready to go yet and his was. He also had a big influence on my writing and was just a generally bright person who is sorely missed by all who knew him. Cat's In The Cradle is pretty self explanatory.
I don't know if the lyrics to this song are too sad, but the over-all soundscape is definetly melancholic. Camu Tao - Oxycontin What adds to the sadness of this is that this guy was like an underground legend from my beloved home [and current] city, and well... he unfortunately died of lung cancer a few years back. Really it'd be cool if you checked him out. He was really unique and talented. I've never heard anyone sound like him and doubt I ever will again. I cherish his short, but awesome body of work and have most of it on my PC.
~ many- I'm a sad song loving female~ Ray Lamontagne "This love is over"(omg the words) Andrea Boccelli "Time to say goodbye" Jackie Evancho"The Lords prayer" Adam Lambert "Mad World" (anyone-even shrek) Hallelujah Danny boy - Jackie Wilson (old) Beach boys "God only knows"
